Review "Keith R. Baker in Longshot in Missouri tells a Civil War story from a fresh perspective that will leave the reader wanting more." - James D Best

From the Back Cover 1862 was the year that the US Civil War underwent a major ramping up.  People on both sides of the fight were confused, angry, and hesitant.  Most believed the 'war' would have already been over.  Very few people realized to what extent the citizenry was being manipulated to participate in the country's most dividing event in its history. In LONGSHOT in MISSOURI, we meet Rob Finn - an Irish immigrant farmer living in Wisconsin - and follow him through his introduction to the grueling realities of war within a nation. Rob's unusual talents with a rifle have earned him the nickname of Longshot, together with assignments that take him to various places around the western theatre of the war.   It is a physically taxing, emotional journey,  on which he is sometimes surprised by the truths he learns while doing his job as a soldier and a spy.We also meet Allan Pinkerton, and others of his staff, getting a little insight into what the beginnings of military intelligence for the United States government was like in its infancy.Historical characters interact with our fictional hero; actual events are intertwined with the daily lives and conversations of people in those rapidly changing times.  Join with Rob as he works to serve and save the things he believes to be of utmost importance, and struggles to sort out those beliefs - the true from the false - in a baffling environment. What others are saying about LONGSHOT in MISSOURI:"Excellent read!""I really enjoyed the historical details and all the characters.""My grandfather was from Ireland and I can hear him again when Rob is speaking . Thanks so much!""Can't wait to see what happens to Rob, Molly, Jeff and the Shaker people in the next book."LONGSHOT in MISSOURI is the first book in the LONGSHOT series, which chronicles a rural family as it struggles through the US CIVIL WAR and beyond.

I was impressed that the story was told in such a way that I felt like I knew the characters personally. The book was refreshingly without vulgarity or unnecessary sex. I rreally have to say that I was sorry to come to the end of the book; I wanted to read more.

Longshot takes us deliberately and carefully, with texture, through the need for a latter day sniper in a successful attempt to show us the era of Civil War. All the characters are fully developed, all serve real purpose to the story, and two, at least, elicit a sense of reality, ie, I can conger Finn and Pinkerton with ease. Ditto Molly. Descriptive writing, tension, clarity of story, and yes, really good use of grownup language score high with my reader needs. Loved it , would highly recommend it and look forward to much more from this writer.

The characters and conflicts of LONGSHOT IN MISSOURI make it well worth your time By Cyrus Webb It takes a skillful storyteller to be able to transport you to a time and place you know nothing about and feel as though you are a part of the story. Author Keith R. Baker is proving himself to be that kind of storyteller. When I was reading LONGSHOT IN MISSOURI I felt as though I was experiencing things as the characters did and seeing the world that they were a part of. Set in the late 1800's the book allows you to get to know Rob Finn aka Longshot and the journey he goes on for his country, his family and himself. He is being used to do good work, but sometimes the line of what is good and bad is not an easy one to decipher. Along the way he finds himself not only faced with actual warfare but mental, emotional and spiritual warfare as well, making him an easy individual to understand empathize with. You see, though he has all of these strengths, he is still a man. He has feelings, questions about what is happening around him and to those he knows and what it all might mean. As you take this journey with Longshot you realize that no matter when the story is set it is so like the world we find ourselves in as well. Will Longshot be able to continue on his path to do good or will the events of his day get the best of him? That is what readers will get to see as they travel with him and others through the book.Definitely well written and full of life's great questions and life lessons, LONGSHOT IN MISSOURI is a book well worth your time.

The common man’s most exotic travel experience, the palatial Duronto Express, turns into one of the most inexplicable crime scenes ever witnessed. One bound for Delhi, left Mumbai and halted the next morning, 550 KM away from its destination, with 6 men less. As everyone laid asleep in the lulling somnolence, something happened. Something miserable! It effaced 6 men off the globe; 6 men who were travelling together in one single section of that Duronto Express. 6 fine shots in their cerebra, 2 pistols, and with two agape cadavers on the top 2 tiers. Railway authorities desperately looked upon the services of a lawman, one who could emancipate them and get the wheels turning again. They get one in form of Deepak Oberoi. A staunch ardent cop of about 30 and as stout as one can get, Deepak assumes control of the situation with immaculate precision and darting sagacity. Equipped with the methods of law and investigation, Deepak attempts to solve the problem in a step by step manner. With his usual demeanour, Deepak approaches the case with all his meticulousness. He looks for clues and he hunts for men, only to find that the case runs beyond only a few mere minions. Deepak has an army to back him, but yet he has to fight as the sole soldier. He runs, he chases, he flounders, he thrives, and he gets it all wrong, not once, but almost twice. Deepak finally tracks down the presence of the ultimate convict; The Sarpanch Ji. A humdinger of sorts, the majestic Sarpanch Ji runs what is apparently India’s largest drug cartel. A man who connived with every law enforcement agency to get things go his way, and a man who has a queer and dauntless way of buttressing his ever growing empire. Deepak was the only one who could take the connection this far, and Deepak gets himself a kitten’s whisker distance from the final answer. His quest for the truth badgers him to the extent of nearly getting himself killed, and so he would have been if it wasn’t for that peculiar stranger. He shall become Deepak’s persistent entourage and his sole companion. It is only he who knows how Deepak had to cross the bounds of law to achieve justice, and it is only he who knows Deepak’s whereabouts. Deepak finds his purpose inscrutable and fears him, but the stranger just stays around, like a silent onlooker, leading Deepak to his final destination, correcting his course whenever it goes awry! Witness the tale unfold through a nebulous maze of events, all secluded and yet so starkly interconnected. Is there someone who is scripting this tale? A tale of squiggly turns, a tale of enthralling junctures and a tale explored through the words of that one man, who fights it all, and who treads his way to the most flummoxing revelation you ever witnessed. The 6 murders on Duronto Express is the tale of a man’s ardent desire to see the truth, a tribute to his dexterity, and a requiem to his stolid determination. The 6 murders on Duronto Express is Deepak’s exposition of the most grisly of encounters and the most odious of people, and the assistance he gets from a single patron, perhaps the only patron he has! What is his secret, and what is his story? What “answers” do those “Six Tiers” hold, as alluded by an old man who slept in the compartment adjoining them? And what’s the treasure trove this inquest leads Deepak to? And what is it that Deepak himself has to hide? What is his connection to that eerie stranger? Find all the answers come out, from no one but Deepak himself. A regaling tale is about to be told. The 6 murders on Duronto Express – A venturesome cop’s own account of the most exhilarating adventure ever!
