By Deb While recovering from surgery, I was looking for a book that was easy reading with a bit of culture and history, and most of all humor. This book was just what the doctor ordered.Mr. Wiles is a master storyteller, and for the past few days, I've been transported from South Africa to London (and various places in between), ensconced in the adventures of naive, but completely endearing Nelson Leatherby and his troublesome, but loveable sidekick, Rafferty. The author has a way of making his characters come alive, and combined with his sharp wit and sense of humor, I was chuckling my way through the pages. These two characters will be sorely missed and I surely hope there will be a sequel. For those of you who love "Downton Abbey," with a bit of humor in the mix, I have a feeling, you'll love this book..., and like me, will be begging "Lord Souffle" for seconds!

Themes of travel, romance, adventure, crime, humour, and growing up link easily together to deliver an absorbing and action packed read. It is easy to identify with the period in which the novel is set; the fustiness of the establishment, Europe, the attraction of good British bikes and cars, and the lightness of spirit of the 60’s. The author takes us, and Nelson, travelling, and through a wide range of imaginative and rather exciting emotions and experiences, whilst remaining nicely within the bounds of the possible. The simple language is speckled with interesting and attractive words, and the quotes at the beginning of each chapter are thought provoking and apt. There is an underlying sexuality to the whole novel which periodically breaks through the adventure narrative in titivating, passionate, erotic episodes.Anybody who left the safety of the colonies to find themselves, and made their way to England will enjoy this book. The carefree, swashbuckling flavour of the story and the author’s kindliness to the events speak to authenticity of experience rather than a tale of pure imagination.

I read a lot, so appreciate something different and original— Loved the characters and I’m hoping that there are more in the series. Can't wait to hear more from Leatherby and his cohorts!
