Black Bat By Edward Bosnar At this point, I've read several of these revived pulp hero short story collections from Airship 27, and I think this one is my favorite. It's quite a strong collection of stories featuring the titular hero. The Black Bat is one of many similar pulp heroes who appeared in the 1930s, similar to the Shadow or the Spider, but there's a few twists that make him unique - and for those who enjoy and/or are familiar with super-hero comics, you'll find that the Black Bat is in some ways an amalgamation of Batman (obviously), Dr. Mid-Nite and Marvel's Daredevil.All of the contributers in this volume made an effort to capture the style of the old pulps, and generally succeeded. By far my favorite story is the first, "None So Blind" by Greg Hatcher, and also Erik Franklin's "The Dark Magician." Both contain not only the expected pulpy action, but also the Bat using his wits to take down his adversaries (in both cases, people claiming to possess supernatural abilities). Moyers' "Death on the Rails" is pretty much non-stop action - and amusing to read while riding in to work on a tram. Dymowski's "The Magnificent Anderson" focuses on the Broadway scene in the 1930s, and some of the characters are analogs for actual historical personalities. I suppose my only criticism here would be that this story would have been well-served by an additional read-through by a proof-reader/copy editor prior to publication. However, that doesn't take anything away from my overall positive impression of this book - and the illustrations, both the cover by Graham Hill and especially the interior artwork by Marco Santiago, are outstanding.

In it he describes his amazement at learning (years after writing Doom Spore) that the parasitic fungus phenomenon the author invented for this story (after researching mycology topics) is actually an established scientific fact. At least one zombie fungus exists, preying on carpenter ants, who die when infected and become new living organisms manipulated by fungus DNA to spread spores more efficiently on behalf of the fungi. From there, readers can either start reading the novel Doom Spore, or continue reading the preface. The preface continues telling about the background of this novel, including material about author Jack Finney (1954 novel: The Body Snatchers), Don Siegel (film director, 1956: Invasion of the Body Snatchers), Robert Louis Stevens (1884: Body Snatcher), and other entangled and related subjects including the author's personal theory about the etymological origins of the word zombie. The story begins in little homes in ordinary neighborhoods around San Diego, where a boy named Jimmy Mendez, 9, and his cousin Maribel Walesky, 10, await the return of their dads from the sea. But the things that come home were not men. They look like sailors, but they are silent and empty-eyed, and are not the same dads who went to sea. At first, only the children can see this -not their mothers, nor any other adults--and nobody will believe them. Then people begin dying all over town, turning into alien spore carriers seeking their next victim to infect. The inhuman forces behind this are well organized. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Skin Crawler By Dennis Latham This novel has some of the best scary scenes of any novel I've ever read. Some of the scenes, especially the things in the corners, will make your skin crawl. It pays homage to the early sci-fi horror movies, and will make you think about if it could really happen. I won't give away any of the story, but be prepared to leave the lights on for sure.

I don't want to give away some of the surprises, but John Cullen will scare the hell out of you. It would make a great movie, and it's a great summer escape read.

O.M.G a must read. just enough suspense, action, drama and love By Devesha Lott I stayed up till 3 am to finish this book, I could not put it down I went through every emotion. I was so frustrated with Tasha, I hated D, overjoyed with her brave escape, deeply saddened by their lose. I honestly felt like I could see every character and scene with the brilliant vivid detail through out this book. Mrs. Wakefield you are an inspiration to me and I hope that others read and enjoy this book as I did.

Agejew At the end of Red Tide, the prequel to Occupied Seattle, the Chinese have taken over Seattle to create a distraction for their main objective - the recovery of the country of Taiwan. Occupied Seattle details the American heroics used not only to defend the U.S., but also to thwart the Chinese attack on Taiwan. Mr. Kennedy does an excellent job of combinig technical details with a page-turning narrative. Readers will get an adrenaline rush as "Calvin" Hobbs and Ryan O'Leary lead an improvised unit on their mission to free Seattle from the Chinese.

By Amazon Customer Chris Kennedy's two books on the invasion and occupation of Seattle by China are not only plausible but the notion of invading and occupying American and Canadian cities along the Pacific Coast has long been a topic of discussion at the Academy of Military Science for the People's Republic of China. Kennedy's story concept has also been validated by recent news items such as this one:[...]That said, China is absolutely, admittedly, and undeniably preparing for war against the United States and Kennedy's books should serve as a warning much the same as General Billy Mitchell once warned of an aerial attack on Pearl Harbor by the forces of Japan. Only a fool would dismiss Kennedy's story as fanciful speculation.The plots and subplots are well researched and well written and it's clear that Kennedy has either done detailed homework or he's visited the places in the two stories in the Occupied Seattle series.One more thing: The vast majority of the books I buy get donated to charity or given away after I finish them. Kennedy's books will join my Tom Clancy collection as books I will read and read again.

I find this book to be very good. Looking forward to Book 2 which is sitting next to my bed, just waiting for me to pick up. Give me horror, give me monsters and I will read it. Always need a book to hold my interest and this has fit the bill.

It would be a great change from the remakes of superhero movies that are currently being recycled! Lots of action, cool creature and all around great story. I do not write reviews but I see that there is someone who allegedly read this book but does some suspect things, One suspect thing is he leaves 2 reviews for 2 different books on the same day, Seems to me you would read the book and leave one review and then read the next book and leave a review on a different day when you actually read the book. And in both reviews he downs this book while promoting another book in the same genre. Coincidence? Its one thing to have an opinion about something but your motives becomes suspect when you pimp another product in your "opinion" review and then go out of your way to down this book in another review you post for a competing. Do not be fooled buy the book read it and you to will be posting a 4 or 5 star review. I do not care how good or bad Kronos Rising might be, If they or their fan base does business this way I have no interest in supporting them with my $$$$.

I was surprised because the opening chapters seem to suggest we're getting an old-school family drama, but then the action shifts to India and the tone becomes more like an adventure yarn. There are also moments when it's more of a crime novel. However, the various threads all get pulled together in a big satisfying climax. So I especially recommend this one to people who like stories that blend more than one genre.Looking forward to Kelly's next work.

There were some areas that were slow to develop, especially at the start when the back story was being laid out for the Silver Skulls story arc. Sarah Cawkwell seemed to be concerned with fleshing out the silver skulls as a chapter while also trying to make a good reading experience at the same time. Several instances did pull me out of the story, however. Firstly, a point at which a space marine captain tells a tacical squad to hold position in the middle of heavily occupied enemy territory while claiming they would be reinforced soon, yet never are. This is never explained or mentioned again. Secondly, when a space marine captain with dual lightning claws cannot hit a chaos space marine in terminator armor. I can get if he cant kill him, but he couldnt even hit the guy. It was hinted that the chaos space marine might have some deamon protecting him but this is barely explained at all, just hinted at. This book might have benefited from another round of editing to clear up these story issues. Cawkwell can definately writing a compelling action sequence, and build up a climax, but the continuity and sheer beleivability of some parts of her work need to be fixed.

OHanlon At first I was a little disappointed with the book but I figured I'd give it a hundred pages or so before aborting. Surprisingly, by that point, I started getting hooked and found the story to be quite entertaining. What it lacks in prose, it makes up in good old-fashioned fun. I think it deserves 3.5 stars but I gave it 4 because I think folks are being a little too tough on some of lesser known BL authors. I would recommend it. As long as your not expecting a Dan, Graham or Aaron style novel, you should have a good time. Share the love.

Not only do we need a 40k wall scroll with art like this, we also need a game or cg film in this art style. This cover illustration actually hits the novel perfectly, the Silver Skulls were center stage, but Huron Blackheart stole the show. Aside from the intro., which I thought wasn't the best way to begin this great story, everything after that picked up the pace to the point where you felt the tension these characters were feeling and going through. Many great characters, fantastic, impacting plot and one of the best Warhammer 40k villains led this to the 5 star rating. This novel wasn't perfect, one of my complaints was the overuse of the word, 'whilst,' not my favorite word and some longer narration where a shorter, more descriptive approach to the writing could have benefited the overall effect, but the sheer scale of the story along with the characters was very surprising and worked out great, I would say, putting this up there with Rynn's World in the series. Can't wait for the next one Sarah, and I'm most likely going to pick up the Hammer and Bolter with her Blackheart short story that was previewed at the end of this novel, cuz I liked it that much. Black Library, we also need a Red Corsairs book ASAP.

By Kevin Lintner I've read the the first book books in this series and was extremely happy to receive an advanced release copy from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. To be honest, I would have bought this because I liked the others so much. But what us better than a great book? A Free great book, am I right? "Noah's Rise" picks up right where "Pulsating Holiday" ended with the title character Noah on the run from the law because he brutally murdered two hitmen who had already been subdued and restrained. Now Noah is fleeing capture with his unfortunate but very loving fiance. Noah has a lot of connections from his service in the military, but he is also a steroid abuser and given to explosive outbursts at any time. There are many hysterically funny moments in the book as well. My favorite was the discussion about dinosaur erotica. I have two real life friends who write in this genre, so it was a wicked pleasure to see it discussed in another novel. Noah's Rise is a great third entry into Lodi's series and I can't wait for the next one.

They give the money to the poor using envelopes full of cash, plus help churches, orphans and other charities. He's loved, called Noah Hood, and the loyalty of his people cannot be denied. Try to find a badass that does more than Noah in almost any book. The humor, sex, action and the story itself are all amazing in this book. M.P. Lodi might have a hard time putting out a better quality book than this. If she does, she will rock the charts in sales.I was emailed an ARC copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Seriously entertaining crime and romantic thriller By Makallam Love realized but life got in the way. This one was one of the best. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. This one had me finish it in one sitting. Noah's Hood could be made into a movie. That's what the media called the main character. I never did find out his last name in the book. He's a former military police man who fought in Afghanistan. He inherited great wealth and used it to help his people and their families. A billionaire friend and his family are almost killed by the gangsters along with him and his girlfriend Emily. They go to war with lots of media watching as Noah becomes known as Noah Hood, robbing from the gangsters and druggies and giving the money to charities, orphanages and the people as cash. The people cheer him on and use him for inspiration. Could he be backed by the military? That's the question at the end and now you have to wait to find out in the next book out at the end of this month.

By Yael I was hoping to read this to my son but he actually immediately started reading it on his own -- the first ever book without pictures that he has wanted to read (and we have tried others!). He is almost at the end, and he loves it. I already bought it for several of his classmates and friends (he is in kindergarten). We can't wait for the second in the series!
