When massive solar flares wipe out the technological infrastructure and kills billions, Rachel Wheeler sets out across the Appalachian Mountain wilderness in search of her notorious grandfather's survival compound.

Rachel is separated from her traveling companions and is captured by Zapheads, violent mutants who are gathering in packs and collecting dead bodies while mimicking human behaviors. Then she undergoes startling changes herself, as her friends are hunted by a rogue military platoon that wants to impose its own law and order in the world of After.

Can Rachel and her fellow survivors make the dangerous journey to Milepost 291 and evade the Zapheads long enough to form a new society and preserve the human race?

Look for the other After books, First Light the Shock, The Echo, Whiteout, Red Scare, and Dying Light. Also look for the spinoff series Zapheads and Next.

Scott Nicholson is the international best-selling author of more than 20 thrillers, including The Red Church, Liquid Fear, Speed Dating with the Dead, Mcfall, and the SOLOM series. His website is AuthorScottNicholson.com.

By Jeri Lynn After ripping through the first two books, I was ready for an ending or some parts of the plot to be resolved which did not happen. Significantly, this is a trilogy of novellas, not books. The first two should have been combined into one decent length book. The ending of the second book was similar to listening to someone speaking who suddenly stops mid-sentence. I reluctantly bought the 3rd story and will not buy the fourth unless it is advertised as the concluding book.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. The story has momentum now! By Don Cranford AFTER: MILEPOST 291 has been worth the wait. And I hate to wait. The story begins where the last installment ends where the Zaphead dog had bitten Rachel. DeVontay takes a more active role, Wheeler and Jorge are way off compass, and Campbell and the Professor are still in the farmhouse. The story begins to take a strange turn with the Zapheads, one that sparks the imagination, and Sarge and his boys show incredible cruelty. This installment moves the series forward in bounds and is a quick read, so be prepared to sit up all night. The story resolves the most of the current conflict and doesn’t leave you with one of those hateful cliffhangers, but the overall climax is yet to be seen. If you can visualize a thousand people standing a hundred yards outside your bedroom window, you can imagine the terror the characters are experiencing as the inexorable tide of Zapheads shuffle along. Are they becoming aware or are they being controlled? Are they the next evolutionary step eliminating humans?I must say that while I hate ‘series’, this one has me hooked. It is an imaginative tale and off the beaten path of the usual fare of zombie stories and an interesting concept to follow. Cleanly written, it is well worth the read.I received a complimentary copy for review. Had Nicholson not moved this story along in this installment, I would have given it a stinging review, but I am a happy reader and looking forward to seeing the evolution of the AFTER world.

Started March 31, Completed April 3, 2014Over a year ago I was looking for a good post-apocalyptic book. I'd read so many zombie books and with The Walking Dead, I was getting a bit tired of the zombie genre. I don't really care for the nuclear destruction with no plants or animals left....so I came across AFTER. I read it along with the 2nd After book and the prequel, After: First Light. Incidentally, if you have not read the prequel you may want to do that, it's free right now at amazon.com.The book starts out with our protagonist, Rachel Wheeler, limping along. In book 2 she got in a fight with some domesticated dogs, gone wild! One bit her and now she is suffering a bite that could be life threatening. This is After, not Before so she can't just jump in her car and swing by an Urgent Care center. What is to become of her. Needless to say this is resolved in a way I did not see coming. There is some good writing going on with this story line. Sometimes I want the author to get on with it, but when the getting there is a good part of the story, then I'd say that's good writing. The other story lines are of Franklyn Wheeler and DeVontray. All are one way or another trying to find Rachel and she is trying to find them. No one is at the 291 Fort, just trying to get back there. For the 3rd book in the series, I would have liked to have seen fewer encounters and more getting to the 291 Milepost. I feel like the story is being stretched out like the old doll, Stretch Armstrong!! Those dolls would break if stretched too long. If it were not for Mr. Nicholson's fine writing style which holds my interests most of the time, I would swear off this series. But since he (the author) builds the characters in a positive way, for now it holds my interest.I know many of us are tired of series with more novels than we wish to invest in. But this is not a new thing, is it. In the late 1800s, Sir H. Rider Haggard wrote over 25 books in the Alan Quartermain series and aren't those considered classics? There is the Lord of the Rings books, written many years ago. 4 books with the Hobbit. So my point is, I think in the “Get it now” world, a series of books is something we just don't want to wait for. It's not new, authors have been doing it for years!I am enjoying the AFTER series. The situation is unique for a book. I like what Scott wrote about sun flares in the first book. He gave us references we could follow to see that these could increase and where would we be then. I love the way he has let his imagination run in these books. He has enriched the characters persona by the situations they have found themselves in. (Not unlike learning to sing, but using a sophisticated piece of music). The development of not only the characters, but the overall story will bring me back to probably as many more novels that happen to show up in this series. These books do not stand alone. You need to read all the books. If you have not picked up any of the After books and decide to read all 4, you are in store of a fun ride through some wonderful story telling!

A private crisis becomes front-page news when terrorists target a TV anchorman and his family in #1 New York Times–bestselling author Arthur Hailey’s riveting novel set in the high-pressure network news industry Anchorman Crawford Sloane, a respected reporter who made his name as a Vietnam War correspondent, thrives on the unpredictability of life in the newsroom. Whether he’s covering the imminent crash of an airliner in distress, terror in South America, or riots in Eastern Europe, or dealing with the cold-blooded politics of one of America’s premier news organizations, he never loses his cool.   With terrorism dominating the evening news, Sloane takes precautions because he knows that as the face of American democracy, he’s a prime target for radicals. But when terrorists kidnap his family, he’s no longer reporting the news; he’s living it. Unwilling to rely on the help of ruthless network executives or the intrepid reporter who was once a rival for the affections of his wife, Sloane sets out to track down the kidnappers himself—and he soon learns that pure terror can lie behind the headlines.

The Evening News, by Arthur Hailey

From Publishers Weekly In his first book in six years, Hailey ( Airport ; Hotel ; etc.) links the infamous Medellin drug cartel with the violent revolutionaries of Sendero Luminoso --"the Shining Path"--a Maoist terrorist group that in this scorcher kidnaps the family of CBA-TV news anchor Crawford Sloane. After a slow, creaky start, and despite a pasteboard cast of guerillas who shoot off more stilted phrases than bullets, the story moves with speed and heat as Crawford's valiant wife Jessica, her young son Nicky and flinty father-in-law are smuggled in coffins to Peru, then marched to a steaming, remote jungle village. Back in the States, heavy-weight correspondent Harry Partridge, Jessica's old lover, spearheads an investigation that the network's slimy parent company, Globanic Industries, tries to hamper. Gripping behind-the-scenes action at CBA-TV and a vivid primer on terrorist tactics pepper the boiling pot. Credibility gaps in the final chapters are paved over by sheer, reckless drama. Literary Guild main selection; Reader's Digest Condensed Book Club selection. Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal "We interrupt our regular programming to bring you a special report. . . police . . . have reported the apparent kidnapping of the wife, young son, and father of CBA news anchorman Crawford Sloane" summarizes the plot of this exciting novel. Readers will feel a part of the team of CBA staffers who become detectives in the exciting race to rescue the family from ruthless Colombian terrorists rather than give into their demands for free air time. Readers also witness life with the captives--both the brutal and the kinder moments. In typical, well-researched Hailey fashion, the behind-the-scenes world in the news department of the network is realistically brought to life. Italicized flashbacks present background that develops the characters more fully. The length of the novel may prevent many students from picking it up, but those who do will find an action-filled adventure that's hard to put down. The novel may also appeal to students interested in electronic journalism as a career; in addition to depicting newsroom life, the book will open their eyes to both the close camaraderie and the bitter conflicts that can exist in a large organization. --Claudia Moore, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VACopyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal For years superstar anchorman Crawford Sloane and legendary correspondent Harry Partridge have been professional and personal rivals: yet it is to Partridge that Sloane turns when the woman they both love, Sloane's wife, is kidnapped by terrorists. This latest offering from Arthur Hailey, his first novel since Strong Medicine (LJ 10/15/84), follows the winning formula that has made his previous books best sellers. By pairing exhaustive, penetrating research with an exciting and taut story, Hailey gives us a fresh behind-the-scenes look at a complex and topical industry. So what if characterization is not one of Hailey's strengths, or if it's hard to swallow the coincidence that a rich, suburban housewife who gets kidnapped just happens to have taken lessons in CQB (close quarters battle) classes that sure come in handy in captivity. A winner just the same. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 12/89 . -- Lydia Burruel Johnson, Mesa P.L., Ariz.Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Still Real Hailey But Could Have Been Better By R. L. MILLER Okay, I guess I'm spoiled. I became an Arthur Hailey reader beginning with "Airport" and then doubled back to "Hotel", "Final Diagnosis" and "In High Places". This one's got a good premise--TV network news. An iconic anchorman and the veteran field reporter who's looming in his rear view mirror. Along with various other players, the way Hailey's always done it, never totally focusing on the big stars. The bad guys are a narcoterrorist group, which may seem dated given that America's current bete noir is based in religious extremism. It would be easy to forget Medellin and the Shining Path given the pervasiveness of the word "jihad". Also dated in the sense that no terrorism incident had yet struck America itself when this story was written. But one other thing occurred to me on re-reading this book. Whenever the TV Guide website hasn't gotten any data yet from the networks about whether a particular episode is first-run or a rerun, they'll say "a procedural drama which yadda yadda...". Which I guess outs me--I'm not into sitcoms, those doofy "reality" shows, "American Idol", whatever--I'm into cop shows, doc shows, lawyer shows. But the point is that TV has given us a generic term for fiction based on professions. Translate that concept into book fiction, that means the legal drama of Grisham and Patterson, the police drama of Wambaugh and Caunitz, the medical drama of Robin Cook. But Arthur Hailey has predated them all without having been a cop like Wambaugh or Caunitz, a lawyer like Grisham or Patterson or a physician like Cook. Which might very well make him the father of modern procedural fiction.

You know what to expect when you pick up Sidney Sheldon - there's an entertainment value at the least. This is one of the worst books I've ever read. The book is highly predictable, when author first tells you story and then what follows is an investigation of what has already been told to you. You can't put the book down - simply because you won't like taking it up. This was my first Arthur Hailey book and boy, I swear this will be my last. Its bad to judge author from one book, but impressions lasts longer especially when you feel you wasted your time by reading a book that claims to be a best seller

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another procedural drama classic by the master By Alex-O 5-star -- Buckle-up, the story behind the news.Arthur Hailey is known for delving deeply behind the scenes of a particular industry or service, wrought with well-researched technical detail and a creative plot woven around memorable characters. At the end of the book, you will be left with a satisfying conclusion and edified by new insight into the background of an area in which as a consumer you saw only the "front desk." His most famous works -- "Airport", "Hotel" -- were made into blockbuster movies. But his lesser known works are of no less quality."The Evening News" is no exception, diving behind the closed doors of how network television broadcast news industry operates. The book starts out with a breaking story of a crippled plane trying to land and how the CBA news team rushes to put together the opening story for their evening news broadcast. The meat of the story revolves around a narcotics-backed Peruvian terrorist cell kidnaps the family of the CBA news anchorman in an attempt to hijack air time for their agenda. The news team mobilizes a two-pronged strategy to stay on top of the story, but also track down and if possible rescue the three hostages. We have the president of the conglomerate that bought out the broadcast company interfering with the integrity of the reporting, and a detailed description of how the terrorists planned and executed the actual kidnapping.Although, how events unfold in the story may appear unrealistic in some cases at first glance, the creative liberties the author took at the time of the book (1990) now ring ominously prescient given recent events with ISIS and other contemporary real-life terrorist groups. As I contemplated writing this review, I took fairly detailed notes in anticipation of writing a lengthy synopis, possibly a spoiler, of the book. However, as I read over other reviews already posted, I became concerned that there were too many readers who were disappointed with the book, even to the point of remarking that they would never read another book of Arthur Hailey's. A frequent remark which I paraphrase here, "This was the first Arthur Hailey book that I read, and it will probably be my last."So instead, I'm going to convey my personal opinion of why the book is one worth reading, and that one should seek out Hailey's other titles for further worthwhile reading. You don't know what you're missing. One (positive) review discussed the fact that dramas and thrillers of a specific genre made famous by an author -- John Grisham, legal thrillers; Michael Crichton, near-future science fiction; Robin Cook, medical thrillers; Tom Clancy, military thrillers (to name a few) -- seem to now be classified as "procedural dramas." Given that moniker, I agree with the reviewer that Arthur Hailey could be called the father of procedural dramas. He is a master, and he was the first.Hailey's stories are based on detailed research of the subject, and stories he weaves, some based on contemporary events, some created, are realistic and not outside the realm of possibility. One has to remember that each of his books are about that subject at a point in time, so will not necessarily reflect what is reality at the present time. Many of the negative reviews came from folks reading the book years, maybe even decades, after it was first written, and it is quite possible that some material is obsolete. But not all.For example, "The Final Diagnosis" was written in 1959 showing the health care system as it was in the late 1950's. But many of the problems and issues described are still present today. If we can't learn from history, we are doomed to repeat history.***SPOILER ALERT***I want to share one plot line which I found curious and interesting. The captors of the anchorman's family end up chopping off parts of two fingers of his son so as to send a message to the broadcast company that the terrorists were serious. This was particulary gruesome and disheartening considering the young age of the boy (11 years old) and that he was a gifted pianist and loss of fingers would have a direct impact on his piano playing. After their rescue, Hailey weaves a doctor's consult and a letter into the story to describe how the boy could adapt his damaged hand to be able to continue playing the piano.I have to think that the author had at some point encountered an event in which a pianist or musician had lost use of part of his hand but was still able to continue their musical career. And realizing that it was in real-life possible, wove it into the story, allowing him to shock and awe us with the dismemberment, but then leave us satisfied that all was not lost at the end of the day.***END OF SPOILER***I gave the book 5-stars because I enjoyed reading it, I learned a lot about the broadcast news industry, and I liked the story very much. This will NOT be the last Arthur Hailey book that I read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another winner in the truly one-of-a-kind Amy Lynn series. By Kia Heavey By book three of Jack July's Amy Lynn series, the reader might reasonably think he has some idea what kind of book he will be reading. As with the previous two books, however, the answer is "yes … and no." Amy Lynn herself continues to develop and grow into a more rounded, multi-dimensional human being as each new phase of her life unfolds. If you've read the first two AL books, you already know Amy as a self-reliant, resilient girl, a confused young adult, an ice cold elite killer with a powerful moral compass, and a vulnerable woman in love. If I had to try to place each AL book into a genre, I'd call Book 1 a coming-of-age/origins story and Book 2 a fast-paced international crime thriller. While Book 3, The Lady of Castle Dunn, is undeniably a blood-curdling international crime thriller, it also manages to be a lavish romantic fantasy. Horrifying, inhumane murder somehow works side-by-side with one of the richest, deepest romances I've read in years. Only Jack July could pull this off.In Castle Dunn, Amy struggles to combine the disparate facets of her identity – southern country girl, elite operative, and woman in love with a billionaire international playboy (now reformed and transformed by his love for her). Each of these facets comes with a family of its own, and Amy loves them all. But can she make them accept one another and remain part of her life? July's family and friend get-together scenes are entertaining and outstanding as all these unlikely people come together, bound by their love for Amy (and by her stubborn expectation that this WILL happen) and find things to admire and love in one another. Each of July's characters is so unique and multi-layered that these developing friendships actually seem quite natural, despite the huge differences in everyone's backgrounds. But that's what happens when good people get together in the spirit of good will, and it's great fun to read about it.And then there's the story itself; actually, as usual, several interconnected stories. A dying millionaire buys himself a new lease on life – and a one-way ticket to hell. A storied Irish estate regains a long-lost heir and comes back to life. Friends old and new abound with ongoing stories of their own. And at the center if it all, a complex, damaged, one-of-a-kind, big-hearted woman finds true love. Throughout her difficult past, Amy has always struggled to overcome, do the right thing, be strong for others, and live a virtuous life, and in Book 3, she is rewarded with a man as complex and strong as she. This is where the series veers into romantic fantasy territory, a fantasy equally pleasing to male and female readers, and paints a richly blessed relationship that demonstrates the joys of true marriage done right. Not that Castle Dunn isn't terribly dark in places and laugh-out-loud funny in others. July's imagination seems limitless. Such a powerful gift for storytelling doesn't come along very often. My advice is to start at the beginning of the Amy Lynn series (if you haven't already) and enjoy every surprising, entertaining, heart-warming, satisfying word.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Another Jack July winner. By Duke of Earle Disclaimer: I worked with author Jack July editing and proofreading this book. However I have NO financial or other interest (possible gain) in this work. That said, I have also edited works by authors whose books I would NOT recommend for various reasons. But this entire Amy Lynn series is a treasure! Jack July is a master storyteller with characters so real and genuine that you quickly feel they are acquaintances. Some you'd want to have as relatives, and by the end of each book you feel they are. Okay, for me to give a book 5 stars it has to make me reluctant to put it down and anxious to get back into it. It has to take me to the world the author has created and let me live there with those who inhabit it. It has to make me laugh out loud and/or get misty eyed. And after I've finished it, I need to find myself thinking about it days, weeks, or months later. Every one of the three books (so far) in this series has done those things to me. My recommendation is to read the series in order, starting with "Amy Lynn." If you're not in love with that book, skip the rest. But I think you'll immediately want to devour both "Golden Angel" and "The Lady of Castle Dunn," and (like me) be impatient for the next installment.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. You will love this fast-paced thriller. By Odetta Dietz I couldn't wait for the third book in this series. I fell in love with Amy Lynn in the first book, as well as many of the other characters. This book has it all, and you won't want to put it down. But do yourself a favor-read Amy Lynn first!! Hope to see more from this author soon, as he is a compelling storyteller.

Amie and the Child of Africa, by Lucinda E Clarke

Review Reviewed by Eric Smith for Readers' FavoriteAmie and The Child of Africa by Lucinda E Clarke is an adventure story set in the heart of Africa. This is the second book in the Amie series. Amie had just gotten married and was living comfortably near London when her husband, Jonathon, announced the news that his work was moving them to Africa. Amie was just settling into the new ways of Togodo when civil war broke out, further complicating the way of life in Africa. With politics and the war ongoing all around her, Amie sets off to find the child she was fostering before war erupted. But she's up against a terrorist organization that has ties to many different nations. Amie doesn't know whom she can trust. She faces many dangers, from the African wildlife to men of different political affiliations who would kill her in a heartbeat if she messed up their political plans. I enjoyed the historical content within Amie and The Child of Africa. The setting is very well researched and Lucinda E Clarke obviously knows this area well. Her knowledge makes this a very enjoyable and fascinating read. I learned a lot about this culture and I was fascinated by the explanations Clarke had for things I had never even stopped to consider. The setting was beautifully described and really made this a wonderful read. I also enjoyed the politics and the danger that surrounded this area and Amie's quest. I liked that heightened level of danger and felt it made the adventure part of the story that much more exciting.

Where the first book left off, with the mystery of whether her husband is a, oh never mind – I don’t want to spoil the story. From the ending of that first book, which by the way was a very satisfying ending, I wanted to know more. I was compelled to buy the second book, not because the first was left incomplete, but because there was more to read about this wonderful story and Amie’s adventure. And so off I went, back to the bushes, the sounds, the other simpler way, and more dangerous, of living, relishing every word, every page, every nuance from the characters driven forward in lush scenes. There was no lack to tension to glue and propel me. This is a smartly written work of fiction where Africa is brought to life as if another character in the telling of the narrative. I don’t want to recount the story, suffice it to say it did not disappoint and I look forward to more from the very talented Lucinda E Clarke

By Julie Haigh I had just finished Lucinda E Clarke's Amie Book 1 when she very kindly sent me a pre-publication copy of her newest offering in her Amie fiction series. I was straight in-it was another quick, easy, action-packed start. I was soon likening Lucinda to 'sort of like a female Wilbur Smith'! Having never ventured to Africa before, I loved learning new things; there's creatures mentioned in here that I've never even heard of so I was absolutely loving all the interesting info about them. I loved this survival story-e.g. ideas like sweeping the area clean and tidy with branches-and the reasons why they do this. It made for amazing and really interesting reading how they do things. This is a very intelligently written book; many of these creatures and their characteristics, outdoor cooking methods etc. and reasons for doing things I've seen on the TV programme QI and this book developed further what I remembered from there. This is an entertaining book but it also makes you think, you learn something and get more out of it. This really is a fascinating book with a mine of information about the local trees, plants, wildlife etc. Excellent for someone who has never been to this part of the world, I loved learning about all this. I was so impressed with this! The writing is so knowledgeable. This is a brilliant book with lots of rich knowledge about the animals and creatures. Such a vivid, clear picture was created in this book with amazing facts about the wildlife. It really was a book to be savoured for me! It was absolutely fascinating-my partner must have been totally fed up with me while I was reading this! He's a bit of a mine of information and I kept saying to him: "Here's another-have you heard of this animal or this type of tree?" etc-I was just so bursting with pleasure at finding out about all these new things and discussing them with him. A real reading EXPERIENCE-not just a book. How absolutely charming reading about the elephants and baby elephants. 'Africa in splendour'-a great quote from the book and it seems to fit this book as a whole. It was exciting and suspenseful and kept me guessing. The descriptions are brilliant and there are great word choices. You can see exactly what's happening in your mind's eye. There are plenty of unexpected happenings, action and adventure and it runs at a cracking pace. A real rollercoaster of a read with some gritty and powerful scenes. This was FANTASTIC! There are many action-packed chapters, real edge-of-your-seat stuff. I think it would make a great movie (the two Amie books together perhaps?). This is a rich and colourful tapestry of the land and is absolutely filled with animals-there are mentions of lions, zebra, giraffe, antelope, hippopotamus, crocodile and much more-it's just so fascinating learning all about the different animals and their different characteristics. Some really tense moments and the excitement continues throughout the book. It builds to a breathtaking conclusion. There have been many ups, downs and unexpected twists. Wow, five stars from me, no question at all. Has it left room for another book? I think so. It has ended and resolved things, tied up loose ends but there can be more and I do hope there is. Pure excellence.

I'd especially recommend it to lovers of adventure/suspense, readers who enjoy books about other countries and cultures and readers interested in contemporary issues. This book works perfectly as a stand alone but I suggest reading Amie:An African Adventure first if only for the wonderful character arc as Amie leaves her family in England and arrives in Africa for the first time.In this book Amie again courts great danger as she becomes caught up in the unrest of civil war. I won't ruined the story but Amie joins with an unlikely group of people as she uses great ingenuity to save one little girl. The sights and sounds of Africa are the highlight of this book, both the beauty and brutality in the natural world and the people of Africa. Suspense is maintain throughout and there are some wonderful characters. Despite the seriousness of the situation there are lighter moments of humour at the situations Amie gets herself into.An enjoyable fast paced read
