It is written in NOW time; with the world suffering from such tremendous life threats from all parts of the globe. Missiles, nukes, spies both political and military , government traitors in all countries……This is real life at its worst, and we watch it through the eyes of Elizabeth Harker and her team at the Project.Eleven stories have been written, with such a wonderful voice, that I am surprised no one has picked it up for a movie or a television series or something. Mr. Lukeman describes scenes like a picture in my mind, I see it as I read it (My palms also sweating, my heart racing and exhaustion after the gang heads home on a mission feeling like I ran, or climbed or fought right alongside of them)After eleven stories with the project team, Mr. Lukeman still keeps the stories interesting, edgy, and realistic with me always on the edge of my seat. After eleven stories Harker, Nick Carter, Selena O’Connor, Ronnie Peete, Lamont Cameron and Stephanie Willets have seen changes in their lives both good and bad; with the reader becoming a member of their family in a way. After eleven stories ‘the secret’ Project under President Rice is not so secret anymore and has made very dangerous enemies.Join me in another wonderful adventure with The Russian Deception. Alex you didn’t disappoint just made it harder to wait for number twelve.Review by Gloria LakritzSr Reviewer and Review Chair for the Paranormal Romance Review Chair

Each and every entry is on a basic level, just an enjoyable read. Some of the books delve more into character development than others. But each is necessary to move the ultimate "life story" forward. You begin to see that while one story has ended, it's effects on the characters, both mentally and physically, continue on to the next book. This is certainly true here and I think will be even more so in Book 12. If you've been reading along you'll love it. If it's your first foray, it's a good, action-packed story, but you would know very little about the characters. In fact there is very little that uncovers or moves forward much, with respect to the repeating characters. I did love the story though. It did evoke cold-war memories for me. Being in my late fifties I lived through much of it and read a plethora of books on the subject, both fiction and non. This reminded me of early Clancy, less the technological details. Obviously the Russians are very much involved, both good and bad. It's up to you decide who is who. We are reintroduced to Selena's sister, the Russian spy Valentina. She plays a prominent role. There is a lot happening over a short span. I thought the book could've been longer, perhaps more backstory or continued fleshing of the characters more interspersed with the action sequences. Without giving anything away, the ending is unsettling and makes you eager for the next book. So please get to it Mr. Lukeman!

Another Winner By Hillel Kaminsky The action begins with the assassination of Russian President Gorovsky and assumption of power by Orlov, a person with a decidedly hawkish mentality. Orlov has a plan to grab more territory for Russia and plans to accomplish with deception and misdirection.I was very pleased to see that Valentina, Selena’s intriguing half sister and Russian assassin played a much bigger role in this story than she has in previous installments. It's rather remarkable that 11 books into the series, the author manages to keep the characters fresh and interesting.

Long before ivy grew on the walls of Miskatonic University or the Deep Ones first came to Innsmouth, centuries before the mad Arab penned the dreaded Necronomicon, the malevolent powers of the Cthulhu Mythos plagued mankind. During the Age of the Antonines (96 AD–192 AD), when the Roman Empire was at the peak of its power, dark and unknowable forces were at work. Ancient wizards sought ways to cheat death, explorers stumbled on the remnants of alien civilizations, foul cults practiced unholy rites, and inhuman creatures sought to mix their blood with ours. Across Rome's vast empire, a few brave men and women rose up to meet these threats for the greater good of mankind. They carried light into the darkness, dispelling a poisonous taint which grows best in the shadows. With steel and spell and burning torch, these heroic investigators of the ancient world defended their civilization from the fearsome powers of the Cthulhu Mythos. Golden Goblin Press is proud to offer up nine tales of their horrific struggles and sacrifices. By MISTER SJEM This set of 9 stories was a stretch goal for a recent Kickstarter connected with the Cthulhu Invictus tabletop RPG. It generally encompasses people of Ancient Rome encountering the Mythos. All are somewhat good or better in quality. My top three: Vulcan's Forge, Lines in the Sand & The Seven Thunders.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Very cool Cthulhu/Rome mashup By Jason Golomb For the full review, please go to fantasyliterature.com"She shivers. She is cold, and she shivers, despite the blanket that wraps her, despite her mother’s enfolding arms.It is not the fever, but the place.A place that feels… old.Old when Rome was young. Old when the she-wolf gave suckle to Romulus and Remus. Old… beyond old. Ancient, and wrong."-from Fecunditati Augustae by Christine MorganTales of Cthulhu Invictus adds nine new stories to the large anthology subgenre of the Cthulhu mythos built upon the cosmic horror foundations laid by H.P. Lovecraft. This collection, edited by the accomplished Brian M. Sammons, has several very good stories by a collection of experienced writers. All fit well within the Cthulhu and Lovecraftian themes, though only a few effectively utilize the Roman place-and-time as an embedded enhancement rather than mere historical window dressing.Below you’ll find very brief summaries and quotes from each of the stories. These aren’t in their exact order from the anthology, but are loosely ranked in order of my favorites."Fecunditati Augustae" by Christine MorganEmpress Faustina is tormented by her inability to give Emperor Marcus Aurelias male heirs. She turns to dark magic to ensure her fertility, though not her children’s health. Morgan has a beautiful turn of phrase and does the best job of building Lovecraftian tension while providing effective hints of the otherworldly horrors. The characters have depth and dimension and, at only 15 pages long, the plot thoroughly embeds itself in its roman historical connections. I really love Morgan’s language and look forward to reading more from her."Seized and held. Roughly turned. Upended over a bony, knobby knee. The world tips as if it will spill out, sloshing like a rocked jar or amphora. The tough, callused heel of a hard hand strikes her a firm blow to the back. She utters a bleat of her own, a hideous glottal expulsion. Her throat opens and now she is the sloshing jar, the rocked amphora, contents emptying in a liquid splatter.""Vulcan’s Forge" by William MeikleThis story explores the idea that the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. may have been more than a simple issue of geophysical forces, but perhaps purposefully triggered to protect the world from a long ancient evil, primed to unleash its fury on the human race. Ancient explorers discover a mechanism deep within the volcano and find clues to its history."One thing is certain — it was designed and built by a race long since lost to man — a race of giant intellect so far above ours that we would be mere insects under their boots should they return."Plague of Wounds by Konstantine Paradias"I sleep in a corner in one of the back rooms of the Synagogue, miraculously left unscathed by the fire. The wound itches and breaks out into a stream of words, its lips flapping together like gums, its tongue lolling. In Greek and Aramaic and Latin and its own nonsense language, it foretells of the terrible doom that will befall the world."This terrific story is of rabbi wrought by an unholy plague, that manifests itself within his own body. He sells out his fellow man to protect his family, but when faced with selling out humanity, he has his soul’s redemption at stake."Lines in the Sand" by Tom LynchAn attempted murder and a cursed dagger drags former Legionary Caius out of his comfortable retirement and into battle with The King in Yellow – a character upon whom Lovecraft built components of his stories."As a Roman cohort stood against an army of unidentifiable creates, they saw: Towers taller than the grandest in Rome floated into view behind the opposing army. Through a haze, over a distant lake, lofty towers pulled the entire cohort’s focus. Everyone watched as the ethereal edifices board towards the sky, until something… changed. Faces feel as the beauty began to fade. Columns cracked, facades crumbled, and friezes fell. The figure in the lead had turned away, gazing back at this domain, and as it began to fade, fall, and decay, his shoulders dropped and his head fell forward. Caius could feel the torment flowing from the enemy. The anguish twisted into anger, then raging fury. The leader brought his head up.""The Temple of Iald-T’quthoth" by Lee Clark ZumpeAnother strong story that’s much more lurid and sanguine than the others, and effectively blends the historical place and time with the Lovecraftian themes.A killer, crucified outside the walls of Jerusalem dies horribly as the cross settles into its base:"… the crown of Jaddus’ skull burst wide open, its gory content spurting through the air. The think, viscid substance — a repugnant mix of brain, blood and gore — rained down on those soldiers ill-starred enough to be in close proximity. From the oozing, shattered husk of Jaddus’ head, a black swarm of small winged things, unseated from their next, took flight with much commotion, congregating briefly in burgeoning shadowy cloud that resembled and impossibly gargantuan monster."Over the next decade, each infected Legionary dies. Quintus knows he’s the last and leads the investigators to a cult leader… who’s a surprise to the characters, though much less so to the readers.
