Doom Spore (a DarkSF Series novel) is a 'summer movie in a book' - dark, chilling, and hugely creepy science-horror fiction in the tradition of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, They Walked Like Men, and The Thing. NOTE: The author has written a special preface for the new Kindle Select edition of Doom Spore. In it he describes his amazement at learning (years after writing Doom Spore) that the parasitic fungus phenomenon the author invented for this story (after researching mycology topics) is actually an established scientific fact. At least one zombie fungus exists, preying on carpenter ants, who die when infected and become new living organisms manipulated by fungus DNA to spread spores more efficiently on behalf of the fungi. From there, readers can either start reading the novel Doom Spore, or continue reading the preface. The preface continues telling about the background of this novel, including material about author Jack Finney (1954 novel: The Body Snatchers), Don Siegel (film director, 1956: Invasion of the Body Snatchers), Robert Louis Stevens (1884: Body Snatcher), and other entangled and related subjects including the author's personal theory about the etymological origins of the word zombie. The story begins in little homes in ordinary neighborhoods around San Diego, where a boy named Jimmy Mendez, 9, and his cousin Maribel Walesky, 10, await the return of their dads from the sea. But the things that come home were not men. They look like sailors, but they are silent and empty-eyed, and are not the same dads who went to sea. At first, only the children can see this -not their mothers, nor any other adults--and nobody will believe them. Then people begin dying all over town, turning into alien spore carriers seeking their next victim to infect. The inhuman forces behind this are well organized. From a secret airstrip, in the Volcan Mountains east of San Diego, they fly crop-dusting missions across the city to spread their spores more efficiently. By the time human authorities realize what confronts them, it's all but too late. Lt. Linsey Simon, San Diego Harbor Police, and her husband, hard-hitting reporter Jack Simon, are thrust headlong into the gripping case of a dangerous scientific experiment gone horribly wrong for corporate profit. Now it's up to Linsey and Jack, along with two brave children and a few hardy citizens, to save the world. San Diego, beautiful tourist capital of blue skies and balmy sea breezes, becomes a colony of the fungal or Fifth Kingdom of life on Earth. This is a DarkSF Series novel by John Argo, linked to others by dark atmosphere and gripping story development. More info at the Clocktower Books and DarkSF websites.

Doom Spore (DarkSF), by John Argo

About the Author John Argo has created a vast, sprawling SF universe of imaginative novels and stories called Empire of Time (EOT. Everything is at stake, and time traveling agents are at work up and down stream (time), observing and tweaking carefully to save the future--the fate of humankind and the universe is at stake, in the grand scheme that must never be forgotten. In the minor key, each novel offers gripping action with compelling characters, often spiced up with an urgent romantic subplot. This is a future history in the grand tradition of Cordwainer Smith (Norstrilia), Isaac Asimov (Foundation), Frank Herbert (Dune), and other masters of the form. Fifty years in process, and still in the making, this mind boggling panorama of infinite universes and time without end already includes over a dozen novels that serve as pinholes to peer into realms beyond comprehension. John Argo, from his home base in San Diego, continues to spin pieces of a vast mosaic that will soon coalesce into an astonishing entirety with a subseries titled Jornade: Chronicles of Metrado. Time traveling monks, military priestesses, female popes of the 38th Century--the innovations are boundless. Metrado journeys back in time to report to the Triune Holy Office uptime about such adepts as Nostradamus, Leonardo da Vinci, Homer, and others who work for HM Sacred Service. Stay tuned. John Argo in 1996 became the first author/publisher to publish entire (full length novel) proprietary (not public domain) digital books on line for download. These included the texts of This Shoal of Space and Pioneers (SF) and Neon Blue (suspense), innovatively released in weekly serial chapters to readers around the world, who sent thanks and kudos. Some of the scenes, especially the things in the corners, will make your skin crawl. It pays homage to the early sci-fi horror movies, and will make you think about if it could really happen. I won't give away any of the story, but be prepared to leave the lights on for sure.

I don't want to give away some of the surprises, but John Cullen will scare the hell out of you. It would make a great movie, and it's a great summer escape read.
