The Second Jungle Book, by Rudyard Kipling

Review ''It would take too long to enumerate even half of the marvelous touches by which the creatures miscalled dumb are made to live for us by Rudyard Kipling . . . The saddest words of this volume are those with which he closes, 'And this is the last of the Mowgli stories!' '' --Vogue

About the Author Nobel prize-winning writer Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India, but returned with his parents to England at the age of five. Influenced by experiences in both India and England, Kipling s stories celebrate British imperialism and the experience of the British soldier in India. Amongst Kipling s best-known works are The Jungle Book, Just So Stories, and the poems Mandalay and Gunga Din. Kipling was the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel prize for literature (1907) and was amongst the youngest to receive the award. Kipling died in 1936 and is interred in Poets Corner in Westminster Abbey.

The stories are a wonderful length for read alouds. The Jungle Book is, of course, a classic and not in need of a review; however, if your only exposure to the Jungle Book is Disney, please give this a try. I wanted to commend Sterling Publishers on making a quality, affordable edition of this and other classics. The paper quality was nice, not thin or translucent. The font is also pleasant--not to small or cramped. I know this may seem faint praise, but so many classics collections are very poorly executed. The price is also very agreeable--only slightly more than a paperback.

Over the years I have purchased many copies of each as presents. Both can be difficult to find in versions unaltered from the original. I have found this to be particularly true in the case of The Jungle Book. Some folks just don't seem to get that Kipling had a pretty good handle on what he was doing. One does not tamper with a Masterpiece. This version is the real thing. It reads word for word the same as the tattered, 40-year-old copy that I first read when I was eight years old. Add illustrations by Robert Ingpen that faithfully capture the emotion of the story and you have a real winner. For those who appreciate The Jungle Book as it was BEFORE it was adulterated by Mr. Disney and friends, this is a very worthy effort.

We have the Disney books and movies at home but since he is an avid reader and I love Rudyard Kipling I thought it was time to find him the real deal and this book is it. I like everything about it, the font type, the illustrations, and the writing is, well... Rudyard Kipling. Beautiful, rich, provocative language that unleashes a child's imagination. My son and I devoured it in a few nights and after we were done it led to a really deep discussion on the differences with the Disney's version. It was a welcomed reminder that we can understimate both our children's capacity to digest the classics and their appeal to them.

Far above the Kinnicut River, at the head of Lost Hollow, lies a forgotten little town known as Dismal Creek. Presumed wiped from the earth by a flood during the middle of the last century, Dismal Creek has been lost to the civilized world—until a deceased boy comes back to life late one night on the riverbank and children from nearby Dry Fork begin to go missing. The dark secrets held by Dismal Creek slowly draw local residents into the world of a backwoods cult that rules the town through ancient traditions, some of which promise unheard of health and longevity but at a terrible price. Only when microbiologist Dr. Drew Gallagher ventures to Dismal Creek and falls under the cult’s influence does he find things he never anticipated: an elderly relative long thought dead, a woman with whom he falls in love and a terrible plague that is spreading to Dry Fork. His struggles to overcome his old life in Dry Fork and the allure of the new life offered by the cult take Gallagher on a treacherous journey until he must make the final choice. Does he wish to die or will he too become a Nightsinger?

I got the audible version, and decided to give it a try. Yep, it was out of my comfort zone, but I went for it. So glad I did! The story is told in first person, by Isabelle. It recounts her life, her feelings, and the events that occurred....some good, but more not so good. I loved how she always ended the writing in her diary (except the one time). This story really tugged at my heartstrings, especially at the end. It takes a great writer to be able to do that! I still think the title should be shorter (maybe "Isabelle's Diaries"), and have a picture of a young girl on the front. Just my suggestions, though.

An attractive woman in a blue suit handed a dossier to an older man in a blue uniform. “Give me a quick recap”, he said. “A geophysical crew went into the Canadian north. There were some regrettable accidents among a few ex-military who had become geophysical contractors after their service in the forces. A young man and young woman went temporarily mad from the stress of seeing that. They imagined things, terrible things. But both are known to have vivid imaginations; we have childhood records to verify that. It was all very sad. That’s the official story.” He raised an eyebrow. “And unofficially?” “Unofficially,” she responded, “I think we just woke something up that had been asleep for a very long time.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a short story of about 6500 words, or about 35 to 45 minutes reading time, for typical readers.

It weaves the ancient belief in Windigo and the more modern belief in UFO's and aliens together in the creation of a suspense filled page turner. The author appears to be knowledgeable on the technical aspects of the story. I recommend it.....a quick read well worth your time!

By Pam I surely wouldn't have bought this if I knew the ending was "up to the reader" as in... there was no ending. The author compared his book to Author, Frank R Stockton's "The Lady, or the Tiger?" where the central plot end was left unresolved.I'm not a fan of these types of stories. I hope you don't consider this as a "spoiler" - just wanted you to be aware before you buy it. Sad, it had the makings of a really good story.

Lovely read By Jude Fernando Loved the story all the way through Where the author takes us through mountains hikes and a brother and a sister Who can not live without Each Other. The ending Was not what You Would expect profit the author HAD Explained Reasons Why he Would end up like that and to me Who always seek for great endings It was quite a shock at first goal later felt That it's much better to leave the things Where the author left off. Makes me wonder all what happened next.Loved the way Jack Took care of her sister Kelly and There relationship was just great. He is the kind Who Would someone kill For His sister. Author takes you through mountains, tower Would you fancy going for real. I would really enjoy the company of Jack and Kelly in Such a turn. Steve and Marvin, story takes us through Their Lives wondering How They Would recounts to Jack and Kelly. You Could just read through the pages imagining all the mountains, hiking and bit of adventure with the family HAD Jack and Kelly. Jude a young girl of the family Who Went on the tour with Jack and Kelly Who Will always-have tablet is her goal later her hand Was amazed with the amazing views over the mountains and I found her really sweet. I never for a second regret buying this book About did for it was really a lovely read.

A thoughtful and suspenseful read By J.R In this wonderfully crafted story you are transported to a small picturesque town where the author introduces us to a brother and sister who have an unbreakable bond. Although the visual imagery created by the author of the small town could have been the focus of the story, the true story seems to be the brother/sister relationship...specifically what atrocities one would do to protect each other. A well-crafted "edge of your seat" drama that will keep the pages turning to the end... I highly recommend this one!
