When a young hunting guide from a remote island in Alaska is found brutally murdered, his naked body is discovered in the Cascade Mountains outside Seattle—the shocking pinnacle to a grisly Totem of body parts. Nathan Applewhite is the fourteenth victim of a cunning serial killer who targets and stalks young men. With the body count escalating, FBI profiler Ryker Townsend and his specialized team investigate the gruesome crime scene. They find no reason for Nate to have mysteriously vanished from his isolated home in Alaska before he ended up in the hands of a sadist, who has been taunting Ryker and his team in a sinister game of ‘catch me if you can.’ But Townsend has a secret he won’t share with anyone—not even his own team—that sets him on the trail of a ruthless psychopath, alone. The intuitive FBI profiler is plagued by recurring nightmares—seen through Nate’s dead eyes—that slowly chips away at his mental stability. Is he burning out and losing his mind—becoming unfit for duty—or is the last victim reaching out to him from the grave? Townsend sees horrific flashes of memory, imprinted on the retinas of a dead man, the last image Applewhite saw when he died. Ryker must piece together the fragments. Each nightmarish clue brings him closer to a killer who knows how to hide in plain sight and will see him coming, but when the dead man has the skills of a hunting guide, he has the perfect ally to track down a killer—the last victim.

The Last Victim (A Ryker Townsend Story), by Jordan Dane

From the Author Dear Readers, The Last Victim is special to me since it is set in Alaska where I lived for ten years. Many of the outdoor float plane and hiking experiences of my FBI profiler, Ryker Townsend, were from the many trips I had taken, a city girl exposed to true wilderness for the first time. Although my life is simple when compared to Ryker's, I hold my Alaskan memories very dear and the biggest adventure of my life. A mother moose charged me on an isolated trail with only a small birch tree to separate us and I've had more than one close encounter with bears. I was also a checkpoint operator for the Iditaski Race, held along the Iditarod Trail during the dead of winter. I've had my share of fun. I dearly love Alaska and hope you'll enjoy The Last Victim. Reviewed by Loraine Oliver By Loraine Oliver The Last Victim is a new category of books for me to read, and I really liked it. This book from the beginning had me totally engrossed, and I did not want to stop reading at night, it was too good to stop reading it! It kept me glued to the pages, while I was gripping my pillow, or cat, or whatever was available.FBI Profiler Ryker Townsend is the lead person on this case. Up to this point 14 bodies have been found, and the latest victim has been found atop a pole of body parts, whole, unlike any of the other victims. The puzzling part is the pole of victims has been found in the Mountains, near Seattle, Washington, yet the latest victim is from Alaska. He was a hunting guide and lived on a remote island in Alaska and to have been victimized and brutally murdered and then placed upon the top of the pole, is very disturbing. All of the victims being young men, in their mid twenties, Nathan Applewhite (victim) is the latest. Ryker and his team have been trying to find the person responsible, so they take a trip to Alaska to see what they can find out after viewing the pole and Ryker stays and sends his team home, as he has something he needs to do while there. What his team or anybody for that matter does not know is that Ryker dreams of these victims and it is like the dead speak to him in nightmares and Nathan the latest victim is the worst of all. Ryker, when he sees the pole and Nathan at the top, gets a gut feeling. He needs to know more about this victim and how he lived to try to find anything to help the case. Being psychic puts Ryker in a vulnerable position as he knows that if the FBI finds out they may not want him working anymore or try to help him and all Ryker has is this job-it is his life, and he sees what happens through the victims talking to him in his dream while he relives their horror and death at the hands of this psychopath. It has gotten so bad with this last victim, Ryker starts questioning his own sanity. While in Seattle with the team, and when he is looking at the pole of death, he feels the killer watching him! What will happen and how will he be able to bring this crazy sadistic killer down, or will he be the one to become this killer's last victim? It is now very personal as the killer has attached a note to the tree pole addressed to Ryker! This book is filled with surprise after surprise, and there is no way to predict the end. This book had me guessing and I thought I had it all figured out until the last part when a big twist in the plot changed everything I thought I knew! This book is filled with a lot of emotional angst, and there even is a touch of romance. it is filled with gut wrenching sadness as Ryker knows the killer still has his latest victim holed up somewhere and it is a rush to find him before he is a statistic along with Ryker!Do yourself a favor and read this book! But be prepared to want to read it all in one sitting, and make sure you have tissues close at hand. The thing that had me dwelling on this book the most though, is that sometimes fiction can actually be closer to the truth than we may know!I gave this book 5***** stars and plan to see what else I can get to read now that I have discovered a new genre of books to me! ,

An excellent serial killer mystery with a paranormal touch By Petra Special agent and profiler Ryker Townsend is hunting the Totem Killer who arranges the dismembered bodies of his young male victims in an artistic, gruesome fashion. Scared to share his special abilities with his FBI colleagues, Ryker independently follows a lead to an isolated place in Alaska where he is confronted with surviving the wilderness, evil maniacs and his own demons. Told from Ryker's first person perspective as well as the third person account of other characters, this was a gripping read with the tension steadily building up and the second half of the book so suspenseful, I had to finish it in one go.Ryker was a wonderful character, but I also enjoyed the well developed personalities of his FBI colleagues. There is definitely potential for more stories surrounding this group of people.Thank you to the author and the publisher for providing me with a complimentary copy via NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review.

Some good twists along the way By ehoward29 "The Last Victim" is the story of a serial murderer called the Totem Killer, and an agent, Ryker Townsend, who is trying find the Totem Killer. The setting is mostly in the expanse of the Alaskan wilderness, which the desolation of the area only adds to the suspense. Some good twists along the way; maybe just a tiny bit predictable, but still enthralling. I like the way that the writer, Dane, really delved into how we make critical choices, how hard that can be, and how we deal with the immediate responses. I also enjoyed the supporting cast. I thought they were introduced nicely and not wooden or one-dimensional at all, which can often happen in suspense novels.. Don't worry, though, there is plenty of suspense and gore. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy good mystery/suspense that is heavy on character and keeps the excitement growing to a thrilling climax.

Storm Toss'd Adventure and Romance By Alyson Larrabee In Constance Phillips' newest release, The Ultimate Catch, the characters and the setting drive the story. Jo, whose obsessive determination and angry tongue land her in more trouble than she can handle, wins a job on a crab boat in Alaska, by drinking its captain under the table.Keller's not only Jo's boss, he's the captain of the crab boat, and she's not very good at taking orders. He was born to live the life of a fisherman even though it's destroying him and ruining his chances with Jo. "Last night he'd tried to write off his new-found attraction as an hallucination of closing time, but in the harsh light and even with a hangover, he was still seeing her in a new, softer light." Now that's contemporary romance. That's the way some men think about women, whether we like it or not.Pete, the sexist creep you love to hate, keeps baiting Jo, but when she takes the bait, he's not ready for the consequences. Even though Jo's petite, she's more piranha than minnow.Jo's best friend and another fisherman on Keller's boat, Graham, always has her back. Jo's father's always talking about how he wants Graham and her to end up together. Will Graham stay in the friend zone? Or become something more?Ms. Phillips has thrown this cast together into a setting that's custom built for drama. Treacherous icy waves slap over the slippery decks of their ship and impending storms add up to a job where danger and death constantly lurk just below the surface and sometimes right out in the open. "She slipped on her rain gear and then took one of the cups from Graham. A single sip was all she managed to take before he pushed open the door, and she got her first look at the Bering Sea in all its venomous glory.""Graham walked out onto the deck. `She's a cold, heartless bitch and you haven't seen nothing yet.'""As if to accent his words a huge swell crashed over the deck, spraying them."Yes, Constance Phillips can write. Dialogue, description, but best of all action. Her dynamic prose makes you feel like you're right in the driver's seat, or more appropriately, the wheelhouse.

By Katie O'Sullivan Constance Phillips has done it again, delivering another sweet and sexy romance that kept me up all night reading and rooting for that happily ever. For Jolanda Gilles, family comes first. When her mother left Alaska with a teenage Jo in tow, she vowed never to let her dad down the way her mom did. She also made a promise to herself to never get romantically involved with a fisherman. But bills from her father's diabetes treatment have started piling up and the balloon payment on his mortgage is also due. Working two jobs isn't quite enough to cover it. Jo makes a crazy bet with her dad's former boss, the handsome boat captain Keller Sveinsson. If she can out-drink him, he’ll allow her to take her dad's place in his crew. Winter crab fishing is cold and dangerous, but highly lucrative. Jo is sure she can make enough money in just a few trips out to pay off all of her father's debt.Keller has his own family demons. He walked away from the winter season two weeks before his own father's fateful heart attack out at sea. When he returned to take over the family business, his fiancé left him. Now his brother (and partner) has walked away from the season to care for his wife, who's having complications with the birth of their first child. The last thing Keller needs is feisty Jo joining his crew, but a bet is a bet and he gave his word. And he can't seem to keep his thoughts from turning to the petite ball of energy who pushed her way into the forefront of his life.Constance Phillips once again shows her mastery of sweet and sexy romance with a tale that weaves real-life danger together with the dangers of the heart. Jo and Keller both need to let go of their fears and past regrets to embrace the possibilities of love. I loved this book, reading it straight through one dark and stormy summer night, and totally recommend this sensual romance.

By KathySat From the first chapter this book had me hooked and Constance Phillips has done it again. There was something about this book that just hit a chord with with - maybe it was that I understand and have lived the instant attraction to another person or that I am living the aging parent phase in my own life - but the book drew me in immediately and kept me there until the end. Jo and Keller have the spark that they don't act on, and when the finally do, it is explosive. Fear, backgrounds, family history all play a part in the story of Jo and Keller. All the things that affect how we react and respond to situations in our lives were present in the story along with the die hard spirit and the happily-ever-after that kinda snuck up on me.Love the book and can't wait until Constance's next book comes out! Her books have become a guaranteed read for me.

By Denise Keef The problem I have found with Ann Charles' books is that once I start reading them, I can't put them down and her newest book "Look What The Wind Blew In" from a brand new series entitled A Dig Site Mystery was no exception! This story centers around an ancient burial ground of the Mayan people, an archeologist named Angelica Garcia, her father Juan Garcia who is also an archeologist and one handsome photojournalist Clint Parker who happens to be the brother of Violet Parker from The Deadwood Humorous Mystery series by Ms Charles. There is also a host of other characters that some you will come to love and one that you will not like...at all! But all these characters...written so vividly that you will picture them in your mind all lend so much to this story as it evolves. Every scene is described in detail that you will see the ancient ruins...the deep dark jungle and you will smell the deliciously described meals prepared by Maria the digs chief cook.Once the mystery unfolds you will be drawn into the world of discovery...treachery...romance and friendship among all of these magnificent characters who all come together to help solve the ancient secrets that began so very long ago.If you aren't a fan of Ann's yet...I guarantee you will be after reading this story which I definitely recommend and also her two other series The Deadwood Humorous Mysteries and The Jackrabbit Junction Mysteries. All of which will give you hours of entertainment and enjoyment and leaving you wanting and waiting for the next book to come out!Kudos Ann on once again writing such a wonderfully...entertaining story!

As a romance, it follows the standard formula: boy meets girl ... boy and girl immediately begin lusting after each other ... boy and girl resist temptation for as long as possible (a full week!) and then have amazing sex ....I didn't buy this as a romance, though. I'm more into mysteries, and I thought this looked promising. It was okay, but not great. The mystery was fairly detailed but easy to figure out. Nothing out of the ordinary. One thing really bothered me a lot. The photojournalist (boy) was visiting the archeologist's (girl) dig site under false pretenses. He claimed to be there to research and write an article, when he really wanted to investigate the 20 year old disappearance of a family friend. He spent more than three quarters of the book furtively hiding his true reason for being there. Why? I can't think of a single logical reason for the secrecy. It's not as though he suspected any of the current crew of having been involved. Girl and her father (the archeologists) had never even met the victim, having first come to the site ten years after the disappearance. Even more ridiculous, when girl and father realize boy is interested in the man who disappeared, they decide they need to prevent boy from learning anything about him. Again, why? It's not as though they actually knew anything or cared. The whole deception was so ... contrived.Again, as a romance, this was fairly standard fare. It disappointed me, though.

By John Kurtze "Look What the Wind Blew In" is the first book in Ann Charles' new Dig Site Mystery series. Her readers enjoy a great plot and equally great characters. Charles gives her readers a new group of characters and plot inviting to join Dr. Angelica Garcia's Architectural dig, regardless of location.Quint Parker, Violet Parker's brother, is the male protagonist of Charles' first book of the series. Charles informs her readers of Parker's history including his multiple reasons for being at the dig site. Readers get to see what going on and know what he is thinking as they are inside Parker's head. His agenda includes helping his childhood friend Jeff Hughes and his mother find answers to questions they have about Dr. Henry Hughes' disappearance. As the plot picks up its pace, Charles adds more information about Quint's role and enhances what readers are seeing from Quint's perspective. Readers feel and see why there is a change of direction of the storyline. The female protagonist is Dr. Angelica Garcia, the lead archeologist for the dig. Readers are given details of her back story as well as information about her ex-husband Dr. Jared Steel. As Charles is continually enhancing Angelica's character, readers are seeing events through her eyes and learn how Quint see AngelicaThere are support characters helping Quint and Angelica maintain enhancement of the storyline keeping readers aware of what is going on as the plot changes directions or new problems develop causing problems for the protagonists. In addition to working to maintain a schedule, Angelica and her father are dealing with strange events or occurrences being blamed on a curse. Angelica doesn't believe in curses or coincidences as each new accident causes members of her crew to leave.Jared Steel is the main antagonist as he makes an appearance at the dig site flexing his muscle and trying to make things difficult for everyone. He dislike of Quint Parker is apparent as he tries to force Angelica to remove him from the site. Steel's motives for disrupting the work at the site and his dislike of Parker will be able to welcome the characterThis new series is a unique combination of all of the humor and drama Charles has given her readers in her other series. "Look What the Wind Blew In" involves readers in the fast moving ever changing plot, introducing them to a cast of unique characters. Each of the characters is well defined and believable. Charles helps readers understand their role in the entire story. The action starts on page one and continues to keep readers interest until reaching the surprising ending. "Look What the Wind Blew In" is a must read and I am happy to give it a 5 star ranking.
