Although an avid fan of Norris, having read some of his nautical adventure stories in the collection A Deal in Wheat, I did not approach this work with very high expectations. Soon after diving in, however, I was pleasantly surprised by how well-written and entertaining it is.Ross Wilbur is an educated young member of San Francisco's upper class. Killing time one afternoon before a society ball, he decides to take a stroll along the waterfront, where he is abducted by a sea captain and forced into service among the crew of a schooner. After an abusive welcome, he is informed by the captain that they will be fishing for sharks along the coast of Mexico for a few weeks, after which time Wilbur will be returned to his home port. After overcoming the initial shock of his capture, Wilbur resigns himself to his fate and actually begins to enjoy life at sea. The shark hunting is interrupted, however, when the crew stumbles upon a drifting, apparently abandoned ship named the "Lady Letty." Upon investigation they discover one survivor aboard, who, much to Wilbur's surprise, turns out to be a woman. Far from a damsel in distress, Moran, as the young woman is named, soon proves herself as fiercely independent, coarsely mannered, and physically powerful as any masculine sailor on the high seas.Norris was a disciple of the naturalistic writing style of French novelist Emile Zola. The best thing about Moran of the Lady Letty is that, despite the pulp fiction absurdity of its subject matter, Norris employs the same naturalistic style he would later utilize in the writing of masterpieces like The Octopus and McTeague. While the events of the narrative at times venture into the extraordinary, Norris's impeccably drawn characters and settings ground the story within the real world. The book does have its flaws. The Chinese characters in the book are at times portrayed as unflattering racial stereotypes. There is a "mystery of the sea" that's neither very mysterious nor satisfactorily resolved. The middle of the book drags a bit, but eventually crescendoes into a thrilling, climactic battle scene. Overall, however, the novel is not so much about adventure as it is about the relationship between Wilbur and Moran. She is unlike any woman he has ever seen before, so how could he help but fall in love with her? Wilbur is no weakling, but an athletic man and veteran of the Yale rowing team. Nevertheless, unlike Moran, who was raised at sea, his killer instinct has been dulled by civilization, and in many ways she is more macho than he. Only by getting in touch with his inner animal can he hope to earn her respect. Not only does Norris take the reader on a thrilling ride, by including this added degree of psychological and philosophical complexity to the story, he lifts it above the level of a typical adventure tale. The Kindle edition that's offered for free on Amazon has one major flaw. In chapter one, the hero receives a letter from a friend. In chapter four, a character sings a song. In the Project Gutenberg edition of the book, these two excerpts are set as indented text in a different font. When Amazon took that file and converted it to Kindle format, those two paragraphs were deleted. While these two omissions won't greatly hinder your understanding of the work, the loss of the letter in chapter one does create an awkward moment of disorientation. It's not a huge loss, but be forewarned if you download this file you're only getting 99.99% of the book.

Wrapped up snugly in my warm bed in England, having imaginary adventures in far off Canada. I also remember a further book called Son of Kazan. I have searched many times over the years to find either of these books, I am now 56 years old , and I am grateful to Amazon for making them accessable to me, I was beginning to think I would would never find them. I highly recommend Kazan to any child for an exciting and stimulating read.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A timeless tale! By A Customer An exciting and deeply moving story, Kazan is a must-read for anyone who loves and appreciates animals and nature. They story is told mainly through the eyes of Kazan, a dog who is one-quarter wolf, and this point of view truly enhances the sense of adventure. I felt an instant kinship with the author even though the story was originally written in 1914.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. excellent By A Customer This book was recommended by my Dutch mother-in-law who loved the story as a young girl. It is a wondeful tale of animal and human, and teaches that we truely need each other to survivie. I enjoyed this more than any other man/wolf stories Ivé ever read.

A growing Islamic threat....

An army ignored by the world....

A Marine who won't sit on the sidelines....

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) is capitalizing on the neglect of war-weary world leaders. No one in Iraq is safe. Christians are herded like cattle. Whole communities are torn apart. Marine Cal Stokes has had enough.

With the quiet support of US President Brandon Zimmer, Stokes and his closest friends return to the Middle East to take the battle to the enemy, even if it means being cut off from ever coming home. This is a about what's right, not what's popular, a moral imperative....

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. C. G. Cooper is very well versed in character development, creating people you are interested in and care about. By Donald B. Once again, C. G. Cooper has shown he knows his way around the written word. I have been reading his work since Back to War, with short side trips to the prequels God-Speed and Running. He is very well versed in character development, creating people you are interested in and care about. Even characters who are only briefly in the story line are portrayed in such a manner to make you worry about them and their families. This is a book about evil in the world and how men of character deal with that evil. There are three parts to the Corps Justice Code of Conduct; this book deals primarily with the second part "We will protect the weak and punish the wicked". The main thrust of the story is the US reaction to ISIS, after their stunning gains in Iraq. (Now where have I read about that recently? I remember...today's newspaper!) Only in this case we have a solution to the problem and a President (who has grown immensely in this series) not afraid to order that solution. Here is a quote from President Zimmer in this story, “Effective immediately, my administration will do everything in its power to protect the American people and its allies . This is not a question of money or power. This is a battle between right and wrong, between good and evil. We will win. This will not be a fight; this will be a tsunami overwhelming your forces wherever they might be." If you have read C. G. Cooper's other works, buying this book is a no-brainer. You don't even have to read my review, you will buy this book. However, if you are new to the Corps Justice series, please listen to an old vet and genuine book geek. This man knows how to write and he will take you places that will make you shiver and make you cheer! This book can be read very well as a stand alone novel, but in my opinion, you would be well served to read God-Speed and Running (still free on Amazon), then Books 1-3 (also still free on Amazon), then read Adrift, to get the back story on Daniel (an integral part of the series). Now you will be ready for Presidential Shift, National Burden, Lethal Misconduct, and Moral Imperative. Buy them now, put them in your library, and dare yourself not to get lost in this world for a week or so. Hopefully I have tickled your interest in this young author. He puts a lot into each of these books and cares even more about the message in these books, that this is a wonderful country that has given birth to generations of Warriors who will make any sacrifice to protect and defend us.The Marines have Semper Fidelis, meaning Always Faithful.Corps Justice has - Si Vis Pacem, Para Iustitiam: In order to have peace, you must first have justice

I love the fact that Mr. Cooper is tackling the things we are seeing in the headlines and is doing so in a way we all dream it could be done. As usual, the Corps Justice series has another winner and I will keep on reading until they stop. Which I hope is a long way down the road cause I'm not ready to give up yet. As long as we keep having headlines about bad guys, then Cal and his team can continue on in books. They just keep getting better and better....

Too Great.....as I finished it in one day. If you are a fan, I won't do spoilers. It took off from Book 6 and just went on. I will say, it took on a new twist and introduced us to new characters that I hope Book 8 will explore. A must read that is for sure.Write faster C.G. Cooper. Write FASTER!

A thrilling, heartfelt adventure.

Alex closed his eyes and smiled as Maureen's hair whipped him in the face. He stood beside her, breathing her in, his knees slightly bent to compensate for the pitch and roll of the Wayward Wind’s deck. The salt air smelled good, but nothing could compare to Maureen's hair. He reached out and put his hand on hers, "Loosen your grip. Your hands will get tired if you hold on so tightly." Maureen loosened her grip on the spokes of the ship's wheel and flashed him a smile, her eyes brilliant blue in the morning light. He could actually see the little facets in her irises. Her cheeks were flushed with pleasure in the beauty of the day, the feel of control over the powerful vessel and, Alex liked to believe, in her company. Over the sound of the wind Maureen asked, "Can I give it some throttle?" Alex said kindly, "You mean, can you give her some throttle. And sure, why not?" They were making fifteen knots, the sea was calm and the hull wasn't straining in the least. Maureen pushed the throttle forward gradually and the deck canted another few degrees. Alex called over his shoulder, "Jack! Hey, Jack!" That morning Jack had brought a lawn chair and a battery operated drill on board. He had promptly screwed the chair to the deck facing aft and had settled himself in it, preferring its comfort to the hard, built in benches. Alex had thought of calling him "Admiral Jack" since Jack expected he and Maureen to do all the work. That was fine with Alex. It was, after all, Jack’s boat. Jack called back, "Hey, what?" “When are we going to see what this baby can do?” "When you have enough money to replace the engine if this one blows up!" Alex laughed and said, "Good point!" Jack yelled, "Alex, could you give me a hand for sec? I need help untangling these damn fishing rods!" Alex noticed that when they were on the water Jack liked to say damn a lot. He pointed off to port and said to Maureen, "When the tip of that headland lines up with that church tower bring her east-northeast, okay?" Maureen smiled, said, "Aye aye, Skipper." and gave a little salute. Alex was grinning from ear to ear as he walked aft and stepped around Jack's lawn chair. Jack, holding a fishing rod in each hand, passed one to Alex and said, "My mistake. I thought they were tangled." And, lowering his voice said, "The change in Maureen is remarkable." He took a look over his shoulder to make sure his granddaughter couldn't hear him and asked, "What did you do?" Alex shrugged, leaned closer to Jack's good ear, and said, "I listened." Jack patted him on the forearm and said, "You must be a good listener." Maureen called from the wheel, "Hey, Skipper! There's a boat ahead!" Alex joined Maureen and looked forward. Loudly enough for Jack to hear he said, “That's a lobster boat.” And lowering his voice, “And don't call me Skipper." Jack called up to them, "What color is it?" Maureen called back, "It's sort of an ugly, pea green with a banana yellow stripe!" A moment later Jack joined them at the wheel. He said, "That's the Mullahey brothers! We might have something better than peanut butter sandwiches for lunch!" Turning to Alex he said, “Come within hailing distance." Alex turned to Maureen and said in a mock official voice, "Come within hailing distance." The chain of command had been established early on the Wayward Wind. Jack liked things run "Navy fashion". And, truth be told, Alex and Maureen greatly enjoyed it. Anikate15 says: The development of the characters throughout the novel is enrapturing. You share in their despair and their triumphs, their tears and their laughter. This book truly explores the complexities of human emotion, giving insight to the difficulties of grief and the courage of perseverance. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who seeks a thrilling and heartfelt adventure.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful surprise. By Paul Read this. As simple as that. I took a chance on this book thinking that it was something original and new. I've always loved a good coming of age story, and I had never even considered reading one in a setting like marine salvage. So I took the opportunity to read this.I was right, it was new. And it was great. When I was reading it seemed to me this was a book where the author had finally found the story they really wanted to write. The characters were heartfelt and real. For everyone in the book, I could find someone in my own life who was just too similar. The town was the one I grew up in, the main character the kid I knew down the street. Despite this recognition though, these characters do amazing things and expand the story in great ways. As for the story itself, I loved the originality of it. I had never read a story on this particular subject (naval salvage) that served as the background of the plot, and so I found myself learning about a whole new world as I entered the characters lives. It made the experience even better. Every chapter sucked me in more, and by the end I was rushing to finish without even having realized this book had captivated me so.If you love a good coming of age story, in a unique setting with a unique plot, read this book. You won't regret it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. 5 Stars Well Done! By Amazon Customer The book had a great pace from beginning to end. It really held my interest and by the end I was racing to finish. I found the characters genuine and realistic and felt at times touched, excited or angry for them. There were plenty of turns that weren't overdone or over dramatic, and it concluded very well. Million Dollar Boat is a recommended read!

I liked the suspense and the early resolution of the problems encountered throughout; thus, making itLess stressful and more enjoyable. I look forward to the opportunity to read more from this author.
