Ex-surfer Jake Fonko's latest mission - locate a former CIA asset gone missing in Cambodia - has his Army Ranger instincts on full alert. He might be handsome, fit and a decorated warrior, but he's certainly no international spy. But Jake, ever the good soldier, agrees to the CIA's directive, trudging over the border to Phnom Penh. Even with few leads, everything goes well - until the bloodthirsty Khmer Rouge roars into town. That's not cool at all, because they clap Jake in Tuol Sleng torture chamber while they gear up their killing fields.
Relying on his training, keen observations and ironic sense of humor might not be enough to save him. And one surprise after another pops up on his way to the wild truth.
Maybe that asset was never really missing at all.
For fans of fun, fast-moving adventures, the Jake Fonko series seamlessly blends well-researched 20th century history with equal parts white-knuckle thrills, satirical humor and explosive action. If you like Ian Fleming (Bond), John D. MacDonald (Travis McGee), George MacDonald Fraser (Flashman) or Clive Cussler (Dirk Pitt), you'll enjoy the Jake Fonko series.

Believable protagonist in a well written story By Charles DiSogra I was surprised at how authentic Fonko came across from beginning to end in this very exciting story. The author has picked a unique time in history and a setting that few have experienced. Although much has been portrayed about Saigon during those war years, so little has been said about Cambodia and specifically Phnom Penh. Having lived in that part of the world, I can say there is a great deal of authenticity in the descriptions and in the people in the story. And, what a story! The author writes with a style that reminds me of Hemingway, a certain beauty and a punch, efficient yet mesmerizing, memorable images. Fonko’s story captures a place and a point in history that is both riveting and disturbing. The stupidity, the corruption, ingenuity and horror are all there as they are in any war setting. Along with the absurd contradictions, survival stories and sheer luck that makes heroes and evildoers. This is one of those rare books I could not put down. Hollywood should love to get this on the big screen and tell this tale and bring this time in history back to life, as tragic as it was but so much a part of the world in the mid-1970s. Not your usual spy story and a worthwhile read. Looking forward to more from this writer.

Hesse Pflingger (Tinderboxed Press)If you've ever wondered what it was like to be the last American in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in 1975 with the Khmer Rouge already ruling the streets and no way out, Professor B. Hesse Pflingger's "Jake Fonko M.I.A." will give you a very good idea. His hero, Jake Fonko, ex-surfer, college dropout, decorated US Army jungle fighter currently on loan to the CIA, is in Phnom Penh posing as an expert on rice, about which he knows zip, on an assignment about which he knows even less. His money is running out, his CIA boss is permanently out to lunch. Everywhere he inquires about a rogue chopper pilot nicknamed Dragonfly, he gets nothing but blank looks and evasive answers. If the situation were a bit brighter, it would look black.Inevitably, Jake is captured. He finds himself being interrogated/tortured on behalf of the Khmer Rouge leadership, who are quicker to chop off heads than Lewis Carroll's Queen of Hearts. But just when the situation looks hopeless, Jake discovers that his interrogator wants to get out of the hands of the Khmer Rouge as much as he does. Together, they set off on a wild adventure.Aside from his meticulous research on the Vietnam war, Pflingger confronts Jake with a whacky cast of friends and adversaries who keep him hopping.

The main character is sent on a very vague assignment, and finds himself in a house of mirrors situation where no one is really who they say they are. The steamy, sleazy atmosphere of corruption and collapsing governments, and the rise of the Khymer Rouge, is the setting for ingenious escapes from some very bad characters. A good yarn set in a place many Americans remember all too well.
