16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Solid but unspectacular... but in need of editing! By Brian Kelley I purchased the Kindle Edition and read through the novel quickly. It was a fun read, and I was surprised to see how quickly I tore through it, but I'm not heavily invested in it. I enjoyed Neighbor's magic system. I feel like the description of the book puts more importance on terrifying, enormous monsters than the book itself does. It seemed like it would be a constant threat when in reality it's not - though it is hinted at that other cities are worse off and serves to foreshadow the unknown danger in the mists below Avondale.My biggest beef is the editing: whoever let this Kindle version get published should be ashamed of themselves, as typographical and grammatical errors start piling up halfway through! A wine will be described as "quiet sweet" when it ought to be "quite," there's an instance of our lead character, Ti, addressing his friend, Rafe, and the sentence ends in "said Rafe." "Too" where "to" should have been used. The errors are minor, but there were several instances where I found myself rereading paragraphs out of confusion - did I get this that wrong?! No, the editor was asleep.Anyways, I'll read the sequel. Mr Neighbors: if you send me an advance copy I'll be happy to edit for you.

By Vi King If you want to create turbulence between the Protagonist and the Heroine there are literally thousands and thousands of ways to do it, your imagination is the limit.Beware Spoliers.But what does the author do? He uses 100% bulls*** misunderstanding, and rather do the logic thing in that situation Lexi just grabs 2 horses and takes off into the dangerous blighted lands. Book ends,I don't even want to know what happens next, this bulls*** misunderstanding is going to turn into an entire plot ark with the protagonist whining about how he misses Lexi but he has to continue to the citadel to save Olyva (who I hope becomes a tree). There's going to be pages of anger and pointless emotion and then something dire is going to happen to either Lexi or Tiberius and one is going to save the other.

By Bob Smith Two Stars and here is why:1) The world building captured me from the beginning with a solid premise. The hook, line, and sinker come in the form of a world brimming with adversity, total mystery, and a captivating sense of something menacingly beautiful. With that being said the book decided to just jump on the easy train and take a ride towards "deus ex machina" park...2) New situation evolves and Mr. Neighbors doesn't know what to do??? His simple solution is to have his characters react in the manner of a pre-pubescent child rather than near the age of 18-20. I don't know how many times the characters were either yelling or crying in the book for no other reason than to add some "spice" . Their reactions to situations only help Mr. Neighbors further his plot line of the new soap opera, Days Of Our Avondale. Lexi, the hardened thief, living as an urchin and stealing what she needs reacts to the suggestion of Ti wanting her to run away with him as if years of surviving on the streets hadn't changed her personality. She yells, she cries, he yells, he cringes at her actions while conversely expecting her to accept his "taboo" and one of them ends up running away from the other. What? how is that a normal interaction between two adults? There are a plethora more of more dramatic scenes of mind numbing stupidity and off the chart hormonal bouts that I could include, but alas, the horse has no pulse.3) The magic system is a tried and true form. Zero problems there. My main qualm with it is how fast Ti picks it up, he just memorizes some information and focuses and whadda know? He is capable of saving anyone's life just by focusing hard enough. This shows zero character grow, which is essential in understanding a character to their core. Growing or learning through the eyes of a character shows their flaws, their true dedication to something, how they react to failure and their overall commitment. In this case, Tiberius just appears to be a perfect learning machine and anytime someone gets mildly or even severely injured I just shrug my shoulders and think, "Well gosh darn, if Tiberius just puts that noodle to work, there's nothing he can't accomplish." This candy-coated story drips with "happily-ever-after" without the tribulations of looming failure. I can already tell by the end of this book that during the series Ti is going to posses a superhuman level of power and somehow his most insidious enemies will always be one step ahead and he can never quite catch them as he narrowly escapes death over and over again. Predictably he will somehow wrestle control of a large segment if not all of the kingdom while his ex-thief wife, who slides between fits of jealousy, due to absurd assumptions, will be almost as un-killable as him.I apologize for the rantfest but I had to get it off my chest. There were numerous solid scores for this book but not one that seemed to explore the depth of what this piece entailed.
