Brown Pulp Adventures #19 (Fall 2015) is the fifth issue of the new version from Bold Venture Press. We get a collection of pulp fiction, and some new stuff, all under a Norman Saunders crime cover. As I've noted in reviews of previous issues, we don't have any similar series of pulp reprints out there now, and this is a great series.The big selling point of this issue is a Sax Rohmer thriller. Not one of his Fu Manchu stories, but a similar work, "The Daughter of Huang Chow." This one stars Inspector "Red" Kerry, and is part of a short series of crime stories set in Chinatown, based on a real person! Rohmer's Red Kerry series has two novels (Dope and Yellow Shadows), and a couple of short stories. In this one, while investigating murder and opium smuggling, Kerry comes across a woman whose feminine charms render him powerless to resist!We also get a mixture of different pulp reprints. A couple are used to launch some new collections of stories from Bold Venture. Many overlook the wide range of genres that ran in the pulps, so this issue we get a firefighter story, "A Pinch of Powder" by Karl Detzer (from Short Stories) and a railroad story by Dave Martin (that appeared in Railroad Story magazine). We get a much longer detective story, "Road Show," about a show business detective by Roger Torrey (from Private Detective Stories).The one new piece is another Splash Shanahan story by Richard A. Lupoff.And finally we get an interesting pairing. We get a pulp story by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson: "Treason for Glory," from War Stories, about an American officer unmasking a German spy in WWI. And with it a non-fiction article, "Searching for a Hero: Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson" by Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson. In this article, we get a great introduction to this overlooked pulp author, later comic book publisher, and how he lived the adventures he wrote.Another great issue, and the next one is already out. Look forward to getting and reviewing it soon.

He wakes up in the body of a young girl and learns that he is in the future where scientists can cure people of an issue that is central to the book. Lets say you are reincarnated into many different forms and things. The scientists that revive people dont like this. The bring people back to their original mind and help them live normal lives. This girl is important because she was at the beginning of the whole mess the world is in.Anyway, good story, good writing. All in all a worthy effort and beginning of the series.

Some of the peripheral characters, such as Billy Ray, were a bit too cliche and could have been more layered or complex. However, I loved the characters of Jed, Ona, and Abe in this story of an alien seeking collaboration with an unsuspecting, disgruntled ex-Marine. The story kept moving, kept me on the edge of my seat in anticipation, and came to a somewhat unexpected ending. The whole of this story is full of heart, which I find to be a rare treasure in sci-fi. This author is renewing my interest in science fiction, something that hasn't happened since I read "The Star" (1955) by Arthur C. Clarke.

Naturally, the military, politicians, media, and everybody else wants in on something this big, and it's up to our independent minded marine to protect his new "girlfriend" from all comers. The action ranges across the country and never slows down. The surprise ending puts it all into perspective. Mr. Buckner's fast paced style keeps the pages turning and we willingly suspend our disbelief. It's just too good not to be true!

About the Author Jordan Myska Allen is a writer based in Austin, Texas. He devotes much of his time to the practice of circling—a unique form of relational meditation. As the head of Circling Europe, North America, he organizes regular practice groups and retreats dedicated to this form of group mysticism. A graduate of Rice University, Allen spent four years touring the country with a funk band; co-organized two global conferences on integral leadership and enlightenment; and worked in corporate change management. By kwizera A Beautiful Apocalypse wasn't just a book for me, it was an experience.I rarely read books that engage both my mind and interest at the same time. This one kept me riveted at its story - will Sophie, Johnson, and Ephraim succeed in getting free of/saving/transforming this community? Will they defeat the zombies? Will they re-start Google's servers? - and at the same time, it taught me things about myself that I didn't even know!As the book moved from community to community, through levels of ever-increasing development, I found out my own biases against different ways of thinking. I felt protective over the "hippie" lifestyle that Sophie, Johnson, and Ephraim encounter at Post-Apocalyptic Esalen. I was drawn to the successful, rational model of society they found at the place before that. But, when I started thinking about it, I realized that I was raised in a more rational household, and I have a hard time paying attention to feelings over actions. Now, I want to start listening more closely to what's going on inside of people, even when I think they're not "doing" enough. It was so cool to have a book show me something I hadn't seen about myself!I recommend "A Beautiful Apocalypse" for anyone interested in development, philosophy, cultural studies, or really good zombie novels. Check it out - I loved it!

A masterful piece of literature and philosophy By Paul I've never read a book quite like this and am literally blown away by what Jordan Myska Allen has done here. On one side it's a fictional zombie apocalypse novel with a great story line, plot, and cast of characters. And on the other side it is sequential layout to Integral Theory that introduces the reader to each level of Integral. You don't have to know or really care about Integral Theory to like or understand the book. I certainly don't know much about Integral but enjoyed the book immensely and was interested to learn more as I read the book.FYI - if you're not into philosophy the last couple chapters might be a bit slower to get through but keep reading. It's worth it!

I found this to be a beautiful book that strikes many crisp notes - a clear and compelling story, suspense and surprise, truly deep wisdom into the human experience that allows the reader to grow in practical, meaningful ways, a mind blowing final chapter, and a page-turner all the way through. I fell in love with this book. It satisfies some yearning I had to see such a powerful perspective painted in fiction - with a plot that inspires new, more nuanced and wise action in today's world. I feel propelled with new understanding. I'm thankful for this gift from the author :)

I feel it is my job to advise the reader of this violent episode. This aspect does not define the whole story and the book is not about violence rather about two dark souls saving each other while finding true love. This is a full length novel, with no cliffhangers and an HEA.

One sign of a great author to me, is the ability to make a hated character in a series, redeemed in their own story. R.C. Stephens freakin nailed it in Wild Cards.Luc is finally starting over in a new life. He's away from his mafia family, is successful in a legal job, and sober. This doesn't stop him from drowning in guilt and darkness however. He's done terrible things in the past that he can't take back. Vicki is on the road to self destruction by trying to bury her pain with sex parties. Her bad choices have started to become dangerous for her. When she goes to New York at her mother's last request, she meets Luc. They have an instant strong connection, but fight it. Will Luc and Vicki find healing or destroy each other?!I read the first two books in the Twisted series, and I loathed Luc. R.C. Stephens brilliantly wrote a raw and gritty story that changed my feelings for him. Now I understand the real him, and fell in love. Character development is perfect, as I saw a completely different side to Luc, while watching he and Vicki heal through time. The storyline is well written, realistic, and flowed smoothly. I physically felt the two characters pain while cheering for their redemption. The twists had my heart racing, and didn't see a few of them coming. Wild Cards is a beautiful story of forgiveness and second chances so I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

He vowed to never touch a woman no matter what. He was paying he penance, because he couldn't forgive himself even though she did.Vicky is suffering from the pain of loss, betrayal and brutality. She was a shell roaming around numbing herself with strangers not to connect but to numb the pain.When he saw her the connection was instant, but his vow kept him away.When she saw him she saw through to his soul, but she was empty and a loner.This book is powerful with topics both taboo and aggressive. What make this book special is the way they find each other and find what they need to heal one another.Luc is still hiding from his past but he pushes on for her, praying that it doesn't result in the same tragedy of his past relationship with Alexis.The love he share for Vicky is deeper and if he loses her he will lose it all.I know I am being vague but to much can be given away sometimes in reviews and I want you go through that struggles these characters go through to become whole again for each other. The journey is well worth the tears and nail biting!

I had to keep reading until I had finished and it didn't disappoint. There are some uncomfortable and distressing elements to this story but they are dealt with as sensitively as possible and not sensationalised.Both Luc and Vicky are trying to break away from their pasts: Luc from his mob family and Vicky from the tragic downturn her life took. Luc has buried himself in work and Vicky in meaningless encounters which led to traumatic consequences for her. Both have regrets and their pasts can potentially come back and destroy them.It is a captivating and at times emotional and distressing read. You will want to devour this book in one sitting to get under the characters' skins and get some resolution to their story.***Reviewed for LBM Book Blog***
