Although an avid fan of Norris, having read some of his nautical adventure stories in the collection A Deal in Wheat, I did not approach this work with very high expectations. Soon after diving in, however, I was pleasantly surprised by how well-written and entertaining it is.Ross Wilbur is an educated young member of San Francisco's upper class. Killing time one afternoon before a society ball, he decides to take a stroll along the waterfront, where he is abducted by a sea captain and forced into service among the crew of a schooner. After an abusive welcome, he is informed by the captain that they will be fishing for sharks along the coast of Mexico for a few weeks, after which time Wilbur will be returned to his home port. After overcoming the initial shock of his capture, Wilbur resigns himself to his fate and actually begins to enjoy life at sea. The shark hunting is interrupted, however, when the crew stumbles upon a drifting, apparently abandoned ship named the "Lady Letty." Upon investigation they discover one survivor aboard, who, much to Wilbur's surprise, turns out to be a woman. Far from a damsel in distress, Moran, as the young woman is named, soon proves herself as fiercely independent, coarsely mannered, and physically powerful as any masculine sailor on the high seas.Norris was a disciple of the naturalistic writing style of French novelist Emile Zola. The best thing about Moran of the Lady Letty is that, despite the pulp fiction absurdity of its subject matter, Norris employs the same naturalistic style he would later utilize in the writing of masterpieces like The Octopus and McTeague. While the events of the narrative at times venture into the extraordinary, Norris's impeccably drawn characters and settings ground the story within the real world. The book does have its flaws. The Chinese characters in the book are at times portrayed as unflattering racial stereotypes. There is a "mystery of the sea" that's neither very mysterious nor satisfactorily resolved. The middle of the book drags a bit, but eventually crescendoes into a thrilling, climactic battle scene. Overall, however, the novel is not so much about adventure as it is about the relationship between Wilbur and Moran. She is unlike any woman he has ever seen before, so how could he help but fall in love with her? Wilbur is no weakling, but an athletic man and veteran of the Yale rowing team. Nevertheless, unlike Moran, who was raised at sea, his killer instinct has been dulled by civilization, and in many ways she is more macho than he. Only by getting in touch with his inner animal can he hope to earn her respect. Not only does Norris take the reader on a thrilling ride, by including this added degree of psychological and philosophical complexity to the story, he lifts it above the level of a typical adventure tale. The Kindle edition that's offered for free on Amazon has one major flaw. In chapter one, the hero receives a letter from a friend. In chapter four, a character sings a song. In the Project Gutenberg edition of the book, these two excerpts are set as indented text in a different font. When Amazon took that file and converted it to Kindle format, those two paragraphs were deleted. While these two omissions won't greatly hinder your understanding of the work, the loss of the letter in chapter one does create an awkward moment of disorientation. It's not a huge loss, but be forewarned if you download this file you're only getting 99.99% of the book.

Wrapped up snugly in my warm bed in England, having imaginary adventures in far off Canada. I also remember a further book called Son of Kazan. I have searched many times over the years to find either of these books, I am now 56 years old , and I am grateful to Amazon for making them accessable to me, I was beginning to think I would would never find them. I highly recommend Kazan to any child for an exciting and stimulating read.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A timeless tale! By A Customer An exciting and deeply moving story, Kazan is a must-read for anyone who loves and appreciates animals and nature. They story is told mainly through the eyes of Kazan, a dog who is one-quarter wolf, and this point of view truly enhances the sense of adventure. I felt an instant kinship with the author even though the story was originally written in 1914.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. excellent By A Customer This book was recommended by my Dutch mother-in-law who loved the story as a young girl. It is a wondeful tale of animal and human, and teaches that we truely need each other to survivie. I enjoyed this more than any other man/wolf stories Ivé ever read.

A growing Islamic threat....

An army ignored by the world....

A Marine who won't sit on the sidelines....

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) is capitalizing on the neglect of war-weary world leaders. No one in Iraq is safe. Christians are herded like cattle. Whole communities are torn apart. Marine Cal Stokes has had enough.

With the quiet support of US President Brandon Zimmer, Stokes and his closest friends return to the Middle East to take the battle to the enemy, even if it means being cut off from ever coming home. This is a about what's right, not what's popular, a moral imperative....

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. C. G. Cooper is very well versed in character development, creating people you are interested in and care about. By Donald B. Once again, C. G. Cooper has shown he knows his way around the written word. I have been reading his work since Back to War, with short side trips to the prequels God-Speed and Running. He is very well versed in character development, creating people you are interested in and care about. Even characters who are only briefly in the story line are portrayed in such a manner to make you worry about them and their families. This is a book about evil in the world and how men of character deal with that evil. There are three parts to the Corps Justice Code of Conduct; this book deals primarily with the second part "We will protect the weak and punish the wicked". The main thrust of the story is the US reaction to ISIS, after their stunning gains in Iraq. (Now where have I read about that recently? I remember...today's newspaper!) Only in this case we have a solution to the problem and a President (who has grown immensely in this series) not afraid to order that solution. Here is a quote from President Zimmer in this story, “Effective immediately, my administration will do everything in its power to protect the American people and its allies . This is not a question of money or power. This is a battle between right and wrong, between good and evil. We will win. This will not be a fight; this will be a tsunami overwhelming your forces wherever they might be." If you have read C. G. Cooper's other works, buying this book is a no-brainer. You don't even have to read my review, you will buy this book. However, if you are new to the Corps Justice series, please listen to an old vet and genuine book geek. This man knows how to write and he will take you places that will make you shiver and make you cheer! This book can be read very well as a stand alone novel, but in my opinion, you would be well served to read God-Speed and Running (still free on Amazon), then Books 1-3 (also still free on Amazon), then read Adrift, to get the back story on Daniel (an integral part of the series). Now you will be ready for Presidential Shift, National Burden, Lethal Misconduct, and Moral Imperative. Buy them now, put them in your library, and dare yourself not to get lost in this world for a week or so. Hopefully I have tickled your interest in this young author. He puts a lot into each of these books and cares even more about the message in these books, that this is a wonderful country that has given birth to generations of Warriors who will make any sacrifice to protect and defend us.The Marines have Semper Fidelis, meaning Always Faithful.Corps Justice has - Si Vis Pacem, Para Iustitiam: In order to have peace, you must first have justice

I love the fact that Mr. Cooper is tackling the things we are seeing in the headlines and is doing so in a way we all dream it could be done. As usual, the Corps Justice series has another winner and I will keep on reading until they stop. Which I hope is a long way down the road cause I'm not ready to give up yet. As long as we keep having headlines about bad guys, then Cal and his team can continue on in books. They just keep getting better and better....

Too Great.....as I finished it in one day. If you are a fan, I won't do spoilers. It took off from Book 6 and just went on. I will say, it took on a new twist and introduced us to new characters that I hope Book 8 will explore. A must read that is for sure.Write faster C.G. Cooper. Write FASTER!

A thrilling, heartfelt adventure.

Alex closed his eyes and smiled as Maureen's hair whipped him in the face. He stood beside her, breathing her in, his knees slightly bent to compensate for the pitch and roll of the Wayward Wind’s deck. The salt air smelled good, but nothing could compare to Maureen's hair. He reached out and put his hand on hers, "Loosen your grip. Your hands will get tired if you hold on so tightly." Maureen loosened her grip on the spokes of the ship's wheel and flashed him a smile, her eyes brilliant blue in the morning light. He could actually see the little facets in her irises. Her cheeks were flushed with pleasure in the beauty of the day, the feel of control over the powerful vessel and, Alex liked to believe, in her company. Over the sound of the wind Maureen asked, "Can I give it some throttle?" Alex said kindly, "You mean, can you give her some throttle. And sure, why not?" They were making fifteen knots, the sea was calm and the hull wasn't straining in the least. Maureen pushed the throttle forward gradually and the deck canted another few degrees. Alex called over his shoulder, "Jack! Hey, Jack!" That morning Jack had brought a lawn chair and a battery operated drill on board. He had promptly screwed the chair to the deck facing aft and had settled himself in it, preferring its comfort to the hard, built in benches. Alex had thought of calling him "Admiral Jack" since Jack expected he and Maureen to do all the work. That was fine with Alex. It was, after all, Jack’s boat. Jack called back, "Hey, what?" “When are we going to see what this baby can do?” "When you have enough money to replace the engine if this one blows up!" Alex laughed and said, "Good point!" Jack yelled, "Alex, could you give me a hand for sec? I need help untangling these damn fishing rods!" Alex noticed that when they were on the water Jack liked to say damn a lot. He pointed off to port and said to Maureen, "When the tip of that headland lines up with that church tower bring her east-northeast, okay?" Maureen smiled, said, "Aye aye, Skipper." and gave a little salute. Alex was grinning from ear to ear as he walked aft and stepped around Jack's lawn chair. Jack, holding a fishing rod in each hand, passed one to Alex and said, "My mistake. I thought they were tangled." And, lowering his voice said, "The change in Maureen is remarkable." He took a look over his shoulder to make sure his granddaughter couldn't hear him and asked, "What did you do?" Alex shrugged, leaned closer to Jack's good ear, and said, "I listened." Jack patted him on the forearm and said, "You must be a good listener." Maureen called from the wheel, "Hey, Skipper! There's a boat ahead!" Alex joined Maureen and looked forward. Loudly enough for Jack to hear he said, “That's a lobster boat.” And lowering his voice, “And don't call me Skipper." Jack called up to them, "What color is it?" Maureen called back, "It's sort of an ugly, pea green with a banana yellow stripe!" A moment later Jack joined them at the wheel. He said, "That's the Mullahey brothers! We might have something better than peanut butter sandwiches for lunch!" Turning to Alex he said, “Come within hailing distance." Alex turned to Maureen and said in a mock official voice, "Come within hailing distance." The chain of command had been established early on the Wayward Wind. Jack liked things run "Navy fashion". And, truth be told, Alex and Maureen greatly enjoyed it. Anikate15 says: The development of the characters throughout the novel is enrapturing. You share in their despair and their triumphs, their tears and their laughter. This book truly explores the complexities of human emotion, giving insight to the difficulties of grief and the courage of perseverance. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who seeks a thrilling and heartfelt adventure.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful surprise. By Paul Read this. As simple as that. I took a chance on this book thinking that it was something original and new. I've always loved a good coming of age story, and I had never even considered reading one in a setting like marine salvage. So I took the opportunity to read this.I was right, it was new. And it was great. When I was reading it seemed to me this was a book where the author had finally found the story they really wanted to write. The characters were heartfelt and real. For everyone in the book, I could find someone in my own life who was just too similar. The town was the one I grew up in, the main character the kid I knew down the street. Despite this recognition though, these characters do amazing things and expand the story in great ways. As for the story itself, I loved the originality of it. I had never read a story on this particular subject (naval salvage) that served as the background of the plot, and so I found myself learning about a whole new world as I entered the characters lives. It made the experience even better. Every chapter sucked me in more, and by the end I was rushing to finish without even having realized this book had captivated me so.If you love a good coming of age story, in a unique setting with a unique plot, read this book. You won't regret it.

It really held my interest and by the end I was racing to finish. I found the characters genuine and realistic and felt at times touched, excited or angry for them. There were plenty of turns that weren't overdone or over dramatic, and it concluded very well. Million Dollar Boat is a recommended read!

I liked the suspense and the early resolution of the problems encountered throughout; thus, making itLess stressful and more enjoyable. I look forward to the opportunity to read more from this author.

Never saw the final twist coming. And I usually do. The imagry was grand and vivid, the writing smooth, but the humor laced into the entire story puts this book into the great catagory. Don't think i will ever look at my own yellow Tabby the same way again.

Because winning him away could lead to wishes granted beyond her wildest imagination; or it could lead to the destruction of her entire world and everything she loves and holds dear. Eventually, Quelly learns the secrets of the genie, and to her surprise, that she has a secret all her own, an incredible secret that will initiate her into the Mystic. In the end will Quelly succumb to temptation or will she be willing to make the greatest sacrifice for love? SISTERS OF THE MYSTIC As if high school wasn’t complicated enough…with teachers and grades, romance and boys, fashion statements and social blunders, broken promises and backstabbing, and Monica The Monster...now best friends Quelly, Angela and Coral have just stumbled upon the Mystic. A world of genies, secrets and magic that has opened them up to a realm of possibilities and powers they never knew existed. And to an ancient being, the Possessor, who has lain dormant for thousands of years—until now. As beguiling as she is deadly, the Possessor’s pleasure is the torment of others. Her desire to inflict pain and suffering is matched only by her insatiable lust for power. She spreads evil like a disease, leaving death and destruction in her wake. Quelly, Angela and Coral must discover their own powers. And with the help of an enigmatic genie known as Ash learn the secret of the Possessor and stop her, before she becomes too strong and destroys them all. The fate of both worlds is on them. But as they will learn in the Mystic…things aren’t always what they seem.

The added touch of typical adolescent desires to the conflict with this new world of magic is great for a book meant for a young By Amazon Customer I was asked by this author for an honest review through Story Cartel and here is is:Quelly. The embodiment of all things teen, with strong opinions and sense of self. She has a unique outlook of her place in the world and how to go through life according to her own rules. Her dynamic with other characters perfectly mirrors the social aspects of highschool and adds a sense of relatability to this tale of fantasy. The added touch of typical adolescent desires to the conflict with this new world of magic is great for a book meant for a younger audience. It also adds to the characterization of the antagonist, Monica, the villain who doubles as master manipulator of schemes in addition to being a queen bee with a major inferiority complex. As for the fantastical elements themselves, I loved the world of the Mystic, it's a unique version of the mythology behind djinns. The setting to the djinns themselves sound whimsical and added to the mysteries behind the figures of the Ancient One, Quelly's main tie to the world of magic she's been thrust into, The Phoenician, a prominent individual from the backstory whose influence acted as a catalyst for our dear Ash, and the unseen evil behind the scenes,The Possessor. All these elements of mystical beings made me want to learn more about the Mystic, and I was able to fully invest myself into the story as I yearned to understand it's universe, the story behind the storyline. This sense of discovery is probably what added to my own love for Ash, who I find someone to be pitied as well as admired. His presence as the catalyst for the action behind this plot made the story's conflict even greater, the clash of good and evil now including the "ownership" of a powerful, as well as handsome, genie. While I have nothing but love for the characters and world of this story, I did find a few qualms to be had with certain plot turns. While the actions of the populars were definitely hateworthy, I still found it unnecessary to have Jason be the one behind the trigger that caused Ash to nearly die, leading to Quelly's realization of love for him. The aftermath of the shooting did help the developing relationship to finally lead to a love confirmation, and I thought that was an interesting lead in. But the understanding I had for the bad guys of this story, the populars of highschool, was that they were meant to be the fracture of Quelly, Angela, and Coral's relationship as best friends, as well as Quelly's own spiral of destruction as she endures the toll on her reputation and self esteem. When Jason suddenly came in with a weapon, it was rather unexpected, with the earlier events of the story, yes, Jason was the typical victim, but to be the type to breakdown to shooting his enemies? But I suppose that's more a matter of perspective than the direction of the book itself.Other than that little disjointed plot turn, I love everything about this book, and find myself wanting to delve deeper into the Mystic we've been shown so far. I'll probably stick with this series and enjoy being sucked into the adventures of this crew of best friends against their social nemeses and the Possessor. I look forward to seeing more of this author's work and can't wait to see how the next tale focuses on Angela and her own experience along with the return of the Sisters vs the Monster.

Quelly Martin (16, Raquel-Elizabeth, Q, narrator, Riots dance team, VB) lived with her Dad (twin), Mom, Granny Nit (aka Thongmuon Farrell, Thailand) & Grangie (m),Your typical H.S. student she attended Lindbergh H.S. (Patriots).Quelly’s classmates/BFF’s are: Coral Cynthia Christensen (15, lifeguard), Angela Baza, Winnifred Winnie Massaquoi (Captain Patriot’s Dance Team, co–captain varsity VB team), JudyGlass (Retro girl) & Brenda Tuttle (VB).The popular girls are: Monica LaFave (aka the Monster leader, mortal enemy, prom Queen), Roxy Berger (Monsterette), Trish Bradsky (Monsterette), Marci Milano who is later kicked out of the Monsterette group & replaced by Penny Febronozy (VB, snotty, Monsterette). What are Monica’s reasons to be nice to Quelly?Ashur Ash (foreign exchange student, smart) is not sure what HS female he really likes. What happened at the Caribou (business)? What are Quelly & Ash secrets? How will the rest of the yr. go for all the students, teachers, etc.?I had 1 of those: 1964 Corvair Monza Spyder.I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written older HS age adventure book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a large set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great older HS age adventure movie, animated cartoon, or mini TV series. Brings back my memories of the cliques that are still existent every time we have a class reunion. Down to ½ of our graduating class now. To be continued. A very easy rating of 5 stars.Thank you for the free Story Cartel; PDF book

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. good and bad, but not one to just dismiss By Teresa H. Garcia I've not had much time for reading or writing lately. In fact I just finished a bit of work for two different sites and am on break before I pick up work again. I did commit to giving a review of a couple books though, so here is one of the books based on what I have been able to grab writing time for. I am about a third though this book and because of the way it is it will take me a great deal of time longer to finish it. So I may write a follow up review at another point after finishing fully. I agreed to give an honest review, so I'm rather critical but attempting to be constructive about it.This book is "Quelly and the Genie: Sisters of the Mystic Book I" by Hallie Gregory. I picked it up because the cover looked like it had been done by the same person that did the Coffee and Ghosts book that I had liked so much recently. This book isn't for me. It will be just what someone else is looking for though. The main character annoys me just as much as BlowingWind while she is in her shock state pisses off other people about being self-centered. She's got her good points but I really want to smack her. Thus I'll chalk this up as a well done teen character. After a great deal of experience with real teens I will say that yes... this character pretty much sums up teens. If you can't stand or aren't in the mood for teen drama then look for something else. If you're in the state where that's what you're needing to work about then this is perfect.I was disappointed in how I wasn't grabbed. Parts of the plot did. I like the mystery. And then the drama of some of the characters just kills it for me. I have been hooked on the first chapters enough to continue though, so this is a good sign. I'm saddened by the amount of typos and misspellings though. Some are explainable, such as characters using mispellings or wrong words because it is in character. And others I think just slipped past a very tired proof reader.I'm not totally sold, but I'm not giving up either. It's proving to be good reading for when I'm pissed at myself for being in a slightly whiny state. I want to see what happens with this genie that needs his butt saved. Darn right I'm going to finish reading this and then come back with more impressions.---I had the chance to finish reading the rest of "Quelly and the Genie." I am glad that I took the break before finishing. Quelly changed quite a bit in the other part of the book compared to how she had been at the start. She's still got a way to go yet, but she's certainly growing nicely as a person. I'm pleased especially with the Dream Wishes that she made, how they helped her family and Angela and then faded in potency as she worked her way outward through her circle. For a teen book it was pretty well done.I still want to do things to Monica the Monster. This was a very well written villain and I like how this villain is foreshadowed as possibly not the true villain. Tyson is fairly well done too, and there is even Jason that turns out to snap and become rather psychopathic. The various cliques were well represented and believable to the point it reminded me how -glad- I am to no longer be in high school. The romance at the end and the genie having hidden and denied his love for Quelly were rather predictable, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. I'd primarily call this a supernatural romance crossing over with coming of age. This is good beyond the need for some proofing. I don't recommend reading this in large chunks though. Pace yourself or if you're like me and rather impatient with teens you won't enjoy the story. The ending has me wondering what happens in the next book with Angela, as she disappears in a tragic lab accident at school. Monica, of course, is involved but came out fine. I'm bumping my initial reaction of 3 stars up to 4 stars.

In this tale, Farr leaves Seven Rivers to rescue Kate, who is pretty sure that she does NOT need rescuing. Jack, not wanting his only friend to travel alone, comes along for the adventure. Despite being a big, strong cowboy, Jack isn't all that great at actually riding a horse. Farr has to adjust to Jack's very slow pace -- even a lope seems too much. It's going to be hard to catch up with Kate. Meanwhile, Kate is sure that she can get to Denver and live her life the way she wants to, but of course her plans hit a big snag. The Apache/Zuni sheep-herder was a wonderful character and I hoped he would continue to be part of the story. He was clever, and I was surprised that he fell into a trap.In all, a great continuation of the adventures of Farr.

The professor has dropped a bombshell not only wanting David to market his book, but to find Yossar Devan a man who may or may not have existed. To sweeten the pot of David’s acceptance the professor suspends him for eight weeks, citing that his last paper was plagiarized. Without using footnotes David has no proof that he didn’t copy it, leaving the student in a quandary. “David hadn’t even had time to make up his mind of what to do. But life consisted of random events that lead to opportunities. In the past, he had never been brave enough to jump on any of them. Maybe it was time he changed his ways? ‘If I accept….When do I start if I accept?’ he asked.”Erik is a masterful storyteller as he leads his readers through giant maze that consists of strange history, psychology, intrigue, mystery, suspense and lots of twists and turns. Remarkably, he had me captivated as well as spellbound from page one wondering what was the story behind the mysterious, missing character and can David’s journalism skills uncover the real story. Powerfully exciting there is more here than a typical mystery novel – one may even find a study in human nature and ourselves within its pages. Nevertheless, this is one unique novel from a gifted author that should not be missed.

He would rather be at the beach and for his paper he did not use any academic sources. For this he is accused of plagiarism and this leads to a life-changing opportunity. His true calling seems to be journalism and this is the reason his professor recruits him for a job finding the reclusive Yossar Devon. I have always been interested in the principles of wealth. This vanishing character holds the answer to the question. The principles he launched over a few lectures at Oxfords University in 1973, just before he mysteriously disappeared are as relevant today as back then. The first is desire and I agree with his definition of wealth when your passive income surpasses your monthly expenses. He amassed a large amount of fortune and he’s called “the devil’s merchant.” It seems like a simple assignment but it turns into an adventure. I have discovered my passion, and even though this book is in the mystery genre I think we can learn a lot about history and ourselves reading the Last Alchemist.

By Maria It shows that previous to writing this novel, Australian author Erik Hamre did quite a lot of research and a deep investigation, which makes this a unique and energetic book. The story goes around main character David Dypsvik, a depressed, broke student who has no aspirations, until a professor at college gives him a secret mission he needs to accomplish- investigate about the disappearance of a wealthy man who went missing 40 years ago. David is really interested in this mission and will do anything possible to solve the mystery.Only with what I wrote above you can already tell it's an interesting theme to read about, but The Last Alchemist is more than just a guy that went missing and someone wants to find out what happened- it takes you from the second world war to Ancient Egypt, and from the very first page to the very last one, you will remain speechless. This amazing modern thriller with some spicy ingredients related to past history is a great reading which I highly recommend to everyone!

She has a joie de vivre that pours out every page of her books. Having read Book 5 GREED IN PARADISE, Book 6 REVENGE IN PARADISE, and Book 7 KIDNAPPED IN PARADISE it is an anticipated thrill to join this fun loving writer in SWINDLED IN PARADISE Book 8 as she continues to pull off this Florida Keys mysteries series (The Florida Keys Mystery Series), having established a committed audience. According to the scant bio she states, ` I wanted to create books with a wide-range of unforgettable characters, with heat and romance, and lots of guns. It wouldn't be complete without a slice of humor and charm. My personal ad would read: There's nothing a new pair of shoes can't cure. Redhead. Long legs. There's nothing like a strawberry-lemonade in summer. Favorite activity: Filling my pockets with seashells. An avid rule follower when eating Animal Cookies: Broken ones get eaten first, match up the rest, duplicates next, line them up favorite to not, least favorite go first. South Florida is my home, with my ungrateful rescue cats, and where Mother Nature takes out her bad attitude in the form of hurricanes.' So even before beginning Chapter 1 you love her!By now the devotees of Deborah Brown's leading lady Madison Westin and her friends and acquaintances and favorite hangouts expect the action and the fun of these serial books to take off from page one. And SWINDLED IN PARADISE is no exception: ‘Sexy sleuths Madison and Fab race to uncover the truth behind a horrific crime… before a loved one pays the ultimate price. Beautiful Tarpon Cove has everything you’d expect from a paradise retreat: Blue waters, white sand and … murder? With deadly secrets and dark dealings brewing beneath the surface of Tarpon Cove, Madison and Fab are caught in a race against time to uncover the truth behind the grisly murder, which may only be the tip of the iceberg….’And that is the frothy speed of action that continues through the book. Readers have met Madison's mother and her sleazy boyfriend Jimmy Spoon because they glide in easily into the story. Madison and roommate/best friend Fabiana Merceau, living in the inherited from the aunt's Key West home, mystery, frank sexual innuendoes, mystery, snappy and at times naughty dialogue - everything that makes Deborah Brown's style a good read. She has her serial genre down pat! And boy is it great to have her back! Grady Harp, October 15

Maddie & Fab are still doing "not dangerous" jobs for Brick, tending the crazies at the cottages, dealing with psycho girl & boyfriends, & trying to solve a murder before the murderer finds them. I'm going to quote from the back cover, as it says it all: "Swindled in Paradise will take you on a high-speed ride through non-stop action adventure, romance, & suspense, & leave you begging for more." Please take the time to read this entire series in order to fully appreciate the characters & their interwoven relationships. You will not regret it.P.S. The only things I missed were not enough time with Miss January & her dead stuffed cat, & the reunion of Joseph & his blowup doll Svetlana.

Another Joyride in Paradise By Marta Cheng In Swindled in Paradise, author Deborah Brown takes us back to the tropical town of Tarpon Cove, a small slice of Floridian paradise where Madison Westin and her BFF, Fab, go the rescue of Didier, Fab’s hot model boyfriend, accused of murdering Lauren Grace, Vice-President of 1000 Ocean Boulevard Corporation, a real estate development firm based in Miami. Luckily, Madison and Fab have no shortage of friends and family who are only too eager to help; Creole, Madison’s hottie boyfriend who has a limitless supply of connections, thanks to his job as an undercover drug cop and also Philipa (Phil) Grey, a bartender at Jake’s, a dive bar that Madison owns. Phil is a third-year law student who has a very successful side business selling information and is more than happy to help her boss by hunting down some much-needed information.Despite the fact that the book focuses on the solving of a murder, there’s an underlying element of wacky humor that makes Swindled in Paradise, as well as the other books in the series, so entertaining – helped in no small part by the cast of wacky characters that are as colorful as the Florida scenery in which the book is set. What reader can resist the likes of Miss January, the foul-mouthed (but somehow lovable) alcoholic with cancer – to whom doctors had given a death sentence but she’d forgotten to RSVP; her boyfriend, Score, who’s also an alcoholic and is at least twice her age; Professor Crum, a retired professor with an off-the-charts IQ who has a remarkable green thumb and a penchant for running around in public wearing only his skivvies; Huck, the neighbor from the building next door, an exhibitionist who constantly urinates outside his bathroom window and certainly last, but not least, Madison’s own mother, whose boyfriend is a young badass called Jimmy Spoon, with whom she shares cigars and Tennessee whiskey, straight up. Each one of these characters add a layer of levity to the storyline, giving readers an entertaining and delightful joyride. Highly recommended!

Consistent to his era of west coast camp logger, institutionalized to the monoculture from extended stays, timber faller Nils 'Nellie' Olson faced the reality he too had succumbed to the eventuality----warehoused between a younger, hippy influenced, 'Sixties' floatplane generation, and the fixed lifestyles of the traditional old school loggers, who had spiraled to lost souls, locked in a camp to skid row bar rotation. Conditioned to resist change, a letter delivered on the eve of the logging division's Christmas shutdown was the first in a series of plots to move him into position for a later letter received at sea, where his reaction to its contents would be solely his. Deliberate that the news would find him mingled to a range of shipboard backgrounds and nationalities, by voyage end Nils realized he'd never go back to the same woods again. Easier to go ahead, than back, continued in the direction he'd been posed returned to his prairie roots for a new start, and to keep an eye on the prize. Author's note: This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places, and incidents either are the products of the author's imagination or are used fictitiously, and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, business establishments, sects, events, or locales, is entirely coincidental. By Paula in Chicago Ms. Evanoff delivers a story that is both intriguing and artfully told in her first novel, Foliage. As a former Parisian, I loved the setting of the book. However, it's the skillfully developed plot with a mix of intrigue, financial thriller and romance that draws the reader in until they are completely immersed in the world of Louise Moscow. The title character and her exploits brought me back to an unforgettable and exciting time in Europe during the fall of the Iron Curtain. Through the voice and the actions of Louise, the author deftly revisits the intricacies of the many moving parts of politics in the early 1990s. It’s both nostalgic and relevant in our present day. A thoroughly enjoyable story, and one that has me anxiously awaiting the continuing adventures of the heroine in the next Louse Moscow novel. Fabulous novel, which I highly recommend!

Why is my husband being so mysterious lately? What is my wife up to now? That’s kid’s stuff compared to what Lorraine Evanoff delivers in Foliage. She puts us in the big league with her very believable Louise Moscow, a fast-rising star in international banking who becomes an unwitting spy in a true and already forgotten banking scandal. What I love about Louise Moscow is that she seems so real, from savoring a stack of pancakes in her mom’s cozy kitchen to creeping through the murky catacombs of Paris. If you love history, you will love Evanoff’s interesting side stories. If you love travel, you will love Moscow’s exotic jaunts. If you love spy thrillers, you will really love Foliage! I can’t wait for Louise Moscow’s next thrill-packed adventure. Stay tuned.

I received an ARC of Lorraine Evanoff’s new book, Foliage: An International Spy Thriller in exchange for an honest review. It starts off fast and keeps you hooked. The series heroine Louise Moscow is sexy, brazen and fearless in business and in love. The twists and turns keep you guessing and wanting to read on. Plus the historic events blew my mind and the depictions of the exotic locations made me feel like I was there the way Dan Brown does. I can’t wait to read book 2!! Hurry, Ms. Evanoff!

THE ORIGINAL SEX GATES NOVEL This is the Sex Gates novel as originally written by Darrell Bain alone. It has a completely different ending, and it contains one more major character and several more supporting ones. In this original version, all questions are answered and all issues resolved in this one book. It is being published now in response to all the fan mail and interest the trilogy generated?and continues to generate. The Sex Gates has already become a science fiction cult classic and this book should be a significant addition to the sex gates universe. Author’s Note I wrote The Sex Gates in 1993 at a frenzied pace, completing the first draft in one month flat. In looking over my original novel and the one ten years later which includes Jeanine Berry as a collaborator, I am unable to judge which version I like best. That is for readers to decide. I can only say that going back over the old manuscript helped me recapture most of the original emotion and intensity with which I first got this notion into novel form. When I revisited The Original Sex Gates, I was reminded of the two versions of Arthur C. Clark’s grand stories, Against The Fall Of Night and The City And The Stars. I have been reading both versions over and over for many years and continue to enjoy both of them to this day. I sincerely hope you can do the same with the two different versions of The Sex Gates.

I'm fascinated by the idea of being able to go through a gate and coming out younger, healthier body which is also of the opposite sex. The story line, once you decide to suspend a certain amount of plausability, is very amusing and thought provocing. I have read both versions a couple of times each and still find them good. I like imagining what I would do under the same circumstances. Read and enjoy!

Brown This is a tighter book with a more direct resolution to the question of the origin of the "Sex Gates" than the three volume series written with a collaborator. Bain thinks this is better and I agree with him.The three volume set just dragged things out and the numerous "sexcapades" got boring as the novelty of gender reversal wears off. This original story got the point across without killing it with repetition. I actually never finished the 3rd book in the series because I got bored with the stretched out exploration of the missing aliens, sex gates used to travel to other planets and so forth.Looking forward to reading the 2nd volume in the "Original Sex Gates" story.

The ways in which the characters in it deal with the changes that happen is what makes it a great story. One cannot read this without at least asking the question, "What would I do if this happened to me?" Merely asking the question is likely to change some perspectives. For those who read the trilogy, this is a better ending and a tighter story, although the trilogy has its merits, too.I first became interested in Darrell Bain's writing by stumbling across "Human by Choice", which similarly brings out the result of a shocking event in the things the believable characters do. That one is a great read, too.

I highly recommend it for beginners and experienced pro's as well. There's something for everyone here. I especially enjoyed the section on "nn Hour Film Races" and I think that the author really tells it like it is and points out some considerations that people new to the process may not think about. All in all, this book is way more valuable than the asking price. Get it, read it and learn!

Lots of great information, especially regarding deferred pay By Kevin S Ryan In front of the camera or behind it, the Berg bible is a must read for all. Lots of great information, especially regarding deferred pay, nudity and 48 hour film festivals. Oh, and also actually getting paid. Everybody involved in film should read this.
