Dismal Plot and Characters Make This Wiltse's Nadir By A Customer David Wiltse's A PRAYER FOR THE DEAD and INTO THE FIRE are full-throttle, imaginative, spellbindingly terrifying novels that really get the job done. And John Becker has emerged from them as one of the most interesting series characters in fiction today. Unfortunately, after the remarkably poor BONE DEEP, Wiltse has plummeted even further to banality with BLOWN AWAY, a true stinker of a novel. The villian of the piece, Swan, is a laughable creation, and his association with a repressed homosexual gangster is uninteresting and poorly shaped and detailed. There's no suspense, no plot worth engaging in, and Becker is left with practically nothing to do. The result is a complete disaster from a usual first-rate writer.

It sounded a bit like a twisted version of Toy Story, so I checked it out. And am I glad I did! It's a dark telling of the secret world of toys, and it would be heart-wrenching if it weren't for the genuinely likeable characters throughout the short work. They run the gamut of personalities and emotions, which piques interest and keeps you reading. The author weaves an intricate tale for a short story, setting the perfect tone and pace for the next installment. Which I can't wait to read!

I want her to be kinder, more understanding, more mature. I struggled with her maturity level because I could see the person that she could be. If only she would calm down and stop jumping to conclusions all the time.I liked Alliances too. There I revealed my everlasting love for Sage Teon and Lizbeth. The two of them are a formidable team when it comes to annoying Razia as well as keeping her out of trouble as much as possible. In Alliances she had grown a little but she was still making the same mistakes. She had more to worry about that personal growth . Other things kept her attention.Conviction was IT for me! It was the book I've been waiting for!Finally! This book was everything that I had hoped and prayed and knew that it could be. Razia was finally lived up to my very high expectations. The Razia that I kept spying little glimpses of in the other books emerged and I loved her! This book had all of the introspection and growth and struggle that I've been waiting for since I read S. Usher Evans first book. It was worth waiting for!Still this book had tons of action too. It's not all the personal, touchy feely crap that I've been waiting for. If feelings aren't your thing you will be happy to know that Conviction keeps up the wild and nonstop pace the other two have had as well. Of course, Razia gets in trouble with Dissident. When has she ever been on his good side? Not only does she have to deal with Dissident's terrible attitude as well as the rest of the pirates inherent sexism and bias. She also has to contend with one of her biggest scrapes yet.I feel like S. Usher Evans has hit her stride now. Every book has been better than the last. From everything I've heard, Fusion is even better.I can't wait.

I give Conviction 5 stars!Positives:-Lyssa/Razia is as hard on herself as ever, and she finds herself asking the questions I think we all ask ourselves at some point in time.-We really get to see some of the guilt that she carries around, afraid to share because she’s afraid of everyone’s reaction. What she thinks will happen, is of course blown out of proportion to what actually does, as is usually the case when we dwell on things.-Razia in a dress!-A Pirate Ball!-Razia trying to work while inebriated.-A little bit of time spent with all of my favorite characters, including another Lizbeth scene that made me laugh.-Great friends give tough love, but they accept you.-CHAPTER SIXTEEN (you now have to read the entire thing to find out what this is)!Negatives:-I really want to slap a character. I guess really that’s actually a positive, but still…Jukin is just terrible.Other:-Overall I felt like there were more little details, more little conversations, that helped to build a fuller and richer picture than the previous two books.*I received a free copy of this book. It was just as great, but it was a little more serious as it focused on Lyssa/Razia's insecurities and stubbornness more. There were lots of laugh out loud moments, though!Razia lost her fire for a bit in this book as her vulnerable side took on a bigger spotlight. I loved seeing that! She had a ton of growing to do.My favorite part of Conviction? MORE SAGE. He popped out of nowhere in the previous two books, but he had a much bigger presence in this book. It made me SO HAPPY. I love his character!The plot thickened in this one and became more intense (with less of a mystery that was in Alliances).If you're reading this and haven't picked up this series yet, DO READ DOUBLE LIFE. It's a very enjoyable series.

About the Author America's foremost railroad fiction writer was born at Norwood, Mo., on June 1, 1886. At age of 4 he took his first train ride to attend the wedding of his future mother-in-law. After working as a gandy dancer on the "katy," and teaching school, he got a job braking freight on the Mo.P. through the efforts of his brother, conductor Bill Dellinger. Later he and Bill went into Frisco train service. E.S. Dellinger quit the railroad, graduated from New Mexico Normal University in 1923, and served as superintendent of public schools at Spring, N.M. (1923-33), meanwhile writing for various magazines. Most of his stories are novelettes. Several of them appeared in Railroad Man's Stories and Railroad Stories, beginning with "Redemption For Slim" (Dec. 1929). His best-known recurring characters were Brick Donley, King Lawson, Redhot Frost and Rud Randall.

About the Author

Stephen J. Wolf earned his PhD in science education in 2006, and has worked as a middle school science teacher since 2001. His passion for chemistry and physics was inspired by watching Mr. Wizard’s World as a child, and learning that many of life’s biggest and most fascinating mysteries could be explained through science.

When he isn’t helping his students discover logic and wonder in the classroom, Wolf enjoys spending time with his partner Kevin, and watching Doctor Who with their two cats, Merlin and Monty. Wolf currently resides in New York, and you can visit him online at http://www.StephenJWolf.com/.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. RPG Fans Rejoice By Eric Padilla Journeys in Kallisor is the first book in the Red Jade series. Let me just start by saying that if you’re a fan of classic role-playing games, this book and your imagination will provide hours of entertainment to combat the forces of boredom in a mundane world. The story follows a classic quest line, characters searching for shards of a magical item of great power. There is battle, magic, some humor, and fantastical creatures that made me have Final Fantasy flashbacks. The book is a typical length for an epic fantasy book, weighing in at just under 450 print pages.There were a few things that kept me from enjoying the book more than I did. Probably the biggest thing was the point of view (POV) from which it was written. The story uses the difficult-to-use-well omniscient POV and the head jumping occurs so rapidly at times that it becomes confusing. Even worse, it jolted me out of my immersion in the story and made me realize I was reading, not experiencing the story through the characters themselves. There were some troublesome inconsistencies in the characters’ personalities and in some of the situations that occurred in the story as well. Overall, if you are looking for an entertaining read that brings you back to classic fantasy, and more specifically RPG gaming, tropes, check out Journeys in Kallisor.

I especially enjoyed how the magic used in the story didn't just happen but was developed through the elements. This gave the story so much more substance and credibility. The author succeeded in creating diverse characters that are easy to root for. I highly recommend this book.

By PatriciaS I liked this story and didn't want to give a 3* review, but I felt it was more than 3* and less than 4*, but there's no 3-1/2* star to choose from. The reason is because I felt it could be so much more if a copy editor had gotten their hands on it. Reading about the biking life and being in the jungles of Mexico was very interesting and well done. This story was quite different from those I've read on LibraryThing and I applaud the writer's hard work. The book cover was great.

By Susan R Lakin Love a good book at the end of the work day, this story really moved along and had some twists I didn't expect. The bikes were pivotal, but not gear or technical heavy. It felt like the writers had spent time in the wilds of Mexico and they wrote visually, so that was cool. Parts of the story really kept me on the edge and I wondered what was going to happen next. I liked the characters, who were all different with their own situations. I would recommend.
