About the Author Epredator / Ian Hughes is a metaverse evangelist. He has worked in unusual and emerging technologies in both a corporate setting and out in startup land. He specialises in using game technology, such as virtual worlds to help people communicate and understand concepts. Being a techie, and working across many mediums he has used social media since before it was as social as it is now. Blogging and sharing ideas is a core part of who he is. Science Fiction is a natural genre and his first book was spawned from using and developing software for virtual environments. He was resident super geek on a UK TV show called The Cool Stuff Collective for 39 episodes from 2011-2011. He was able to share his enthusiasm for new technology with the next generation, as well as working alongside a monkey, a cave girl and a host of other characters. In the third series he got to relive his own saturday morning childhood TV memories by flinging custard pies at people too. His epredator handle is common across most games and platforms. It is part of his online persona, but heavily integrated with his real life one. Things may be digital but they are still real. He used to use just Predator because he was good at instinctively hunting down bugs. However, then the 20th Century Fox movie and characters appeared and it became a much more common name and handle. The Yautja offering an honourable and strong character to identify with too. In the late 90's everything was getting e put on the front of it, ebusiness, ecommerce. So in part a joke he added the e. It stuck. Epredator became a well known handle through the rise of virtual worlds such as Second Life in 2006-2009. By sharing his ideas with colleagues he became known as a metaverse evangelist. Travelling the world explaining why you don't need to travel the world when you can meet in a virtual world full of expression and fun. He is not all digital though, he is a Head Instructor in the self defence martial art Choi Kwang Do. His wife and two children (the latter are both now black belts too) all practice the art.

Deftly written in the "near-future" sci-fi style that extrapolates current global culture, and interprets the possibles we are living toward. This is a fun read, with Hughes' confident prose tackling programmer culture with an insiders understanding, and a keen sense of how the techie world profoundly influences the world around us. This is a great read, one that will having you hoping there is another story ahead for "epredator."

Ian Hughes just redefined the techno thriller By Simón Gómez Being a systems engineer myself, I'm quite picky when it comes to reading novels that claim to be based on technology, informatics, internet, etc. and I tend to critique them pretty hard. Let me tell you, Reconfigure didn't disappoint me one byte!Ian Hughes is a man who has been into virtual reality and cyber worlds for quite a long time, having a quite well known name in the Second Life community as Epredator. His experience and research in the tech field are perfectly reflected in the writing of Reconfigure. Everything that happens in the story, except for the obvious sci-fi elements, is posible either right now with today's technology, or will be in a very near future, and being a techie, that fact delights me.We follow the adventures of Roisin, a programmer who by some fortunate (or not) coincidences, accidentally finds herself able to use her tech knowledge to modify the real world as if it was a computer program like the ones she has been working with all her life. What she did not know and would find out soon is that there are hidden powers in this world who are more than interested in what she just discovered. She will find herself involved in a war she has to fight by herself.Fast paced and with a cinematic flow, Reconfigure had my attention 100% of the time, I just wanted to finish the current page so I could find out what happened in the next, and before I knew I had finished the book. Good thing there is already a second part out!If you like cyberpunk, or sci-fi in general, I would blindly recommend this book. If you don't, I still think you should give it a chance because it's just that good.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good techno-thriller that techies will love By Andy Piper A clever story mechanic firmly grounded in gaming, virtual worlds, tech and coding. For me it took a while to take hold as it needed to lay the groundwork, but once Roisin (the protagonist) stepped into the real world about midway through it became a real page-turner of a techno thriller. A couple of good twists I didn't see coming held my attention! Epredator does a good job making the complex sound more realistic and simple.Disclaimer: I'm a friend of the author and provided some advice during development, but I firmly believe that many sci-fi and tech fans will enjoy this novel.

20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Some of this book made me cringe, but I couldn't stop reading By Linda Linguvic I almost stopped reading this book after the first few paragraphs. Set in a plantation in the Solomon Islands, it is blatantly racist towards the natives and started off with describing a disgusting disease which had infected many of them. Even the British plantation owner, who was the only white man there, had symptoms of the disease but he still needed to maintain discipline over his black workers who were recruited for five-year stints and paid very low wages. I cringed at the description of the disease and I cringed at the description of the discipline, but frankly, I couldn't stop reading.Written in 1911, this is a novel about a time and a place. It is also a story of a romance. And a story about a young beautiful liberated American woman named Joan who was raised free and wild in Hawaii, taught to captain a ship, handle a rough crew, and resist marital entanglements. When her ship runs adrift on the plantation owner's property, he naturally falls head over heels in love with her.What follows is nothing short of high adventure and I can well understand the title of this short 190 page novel. There are worker uprisings, long treks through the jungle, murder, revenge, a duel between two white men and a wild assortment of shady characters. The story moves fast and gives quite a sordid picture of life in the Solomon Islands at time. It is a hard life for everybody and yet, as Jack London describes it, is also a life of high adventure as well as a great example of the work of this author.

If you're a Jack London fan you will not be dissapointed By Phil Jack London’s detailed knowledge of the subjects he writes about astounds me, this level of detail can not be dreamed up, it must come from his real experience and to have been out amongst the world that he writes about is what I find most amazing as are the characters he discusses – never a dull moment. If Jack London were alive today I’d absolutely want to spend some time with

An average length book full of interesting facets and offshoots of activity that flow out into what I think is a masterpiece of story telling. The title, "Adventure," is most cleverly chosen and fits perfectly the "drift" of the narrative. I enjoyed it very much.

High suspense fantasy with dark, monster theme and heroic characters By Debbie Book Description, My Take: The village of Groveland Down is safe from the dark creatures of legendary times. A Warden investigating recent disappearances expects to find human bandits as the cause. Yet he spots the signs of something far worse: creatures of nightmares that can hide among humans by wearing our skin. He calls in the Order of Talan, whose warriors can clearly see or sense the Demons of the broken night.Ferran and Mireia use their abilities to hunt these Demons to protect humankind. They willingly face death to protect strangers who don't always believe the Demons still exist. Evil lurks in or near the village, yet Ferran and Mireia can't spot any Demons among the villagers. The monsters are horrible enough in their true forms, but not knowing when evil might strike might be worse..."Rend the Dark" is a high-suspense fantasy novella with a dark, monster theme and heroic characters. The suspense was built through ever-increasing danger and the character's reactions to facing the horror of the Ruins (demons, monsters). The world-building was worked naturally into the story so the reader understands what's going on without slowing down the action or breaking the tension.The characters were developed enough that we can understand why each reacted to the situation the way they did. Their reactions differed and showed each as an individual. Though faced with a dangerous and overwhelming situation, they each find--in their own way--their courage and a reason to fight on.There was no sex or bad language. There was some gore, but the sense of horror was conveyed more by the characters' reactions than by dwelling on gruesome descriptions. Overall, I'd recommend this quick read to fans of monster stories and darker-themed, high-suspense fantasy. (The writing is excellent. The 4 stars merely reflects the fact that I wouldn't normally read a "horror" story but did so because I so enjoyed the author's other stories.)I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

By Jacquie @ Rattle the Stars This is the fourth short story that I have read from the Echoes of the Ascended series by Mark Gelineau and Joe King. The more I read of the series, the more I love it! Slowly but surely all the connections between the characters are becoming clear and the world of Aedaron is developing into a very complete and complex realm. The novella is a much darker affair than the others and mixes the fantasy and horror genres really well.The novella follows Ferran and Mireia who are witch hunters from the Order of Talan. This means that they have the ability to see the monsters in the dark that hide amongst the human population. Ferran and Mireia are sent to a small village where they team up with Warden Aker and two magistrates, Hil and Riffolk, to solve the mysterious disappears of people in the area.I was automatically hooked from the beginning. As with the other short stories in the series, it featured a prologue that introduced Ferran as a young child in an orphanage who was haunted by the fact that he could see the monsters. I immediately wanted to know more! Later, he’s a highly trained warrior who has embraced the fact that he can see the hidden evil in the world. You don’t learn much about him but I think that works in favour of the story because him being so mysterious makes you want to read more. While Ferran is quite closed off, his partner Mireia (again another strong female character) brings a very emotional and human element to the story. Her interactions with Hil, who represented the “ordinary” person, really added depth to the story.Again, another wonderful addition to the Echoes of the Ascended series. I am very looking forward to reading the sequel, Skinshaper, which will be released in March.

At 78 pages long there simply wasn't enough time to build up any excitement, do any world building, or even explain what was going on. I know they were fighting evil creatures, possibly demons? I'm not sure why they were attacking people. There was some magic involved, I think, at least there was mention of runes that blocked the demons(?) from being detected and possibly a lantern that glowed for some reason. I think the glowing was important. There was also mentions of chanting, but like the lantern I'm not sure what that actually did. After finishing this book I immediately headed to Goodreads to see if maybe I had accidentally picked up the second/third book in the series. I hadn't. This is the first novella in this series, but it would seem that the authors wrote multiple series in the same world. The problem is, if you are going to do this you actually have to take the time to set up your world in each series, see Tamora Pierce as an example. She wrote multiple series, all following different characters inhabiting the same world and for the most part you can pick up any of those series and follow along without reading the preceding series. The authors of this series failed to do this and because of that, I couldn't figure out what was going on or even why. I found since I had no idea why anything was actually happening, I really didn't care what happened to our protagonists. Despite what turned out to be a huge disappointment for me, I will give the authors credit for creating an interesting demon/monster/spider.

From the Author Be forewarned, this is not a book about one of the journalistic greats such as John Hersey, Ernest Hemingway, Edward R. Murrow or even my friend Don Kirk, who in his 70s is still slogging around Asia on assignments.  Don was young man when he won an award for a book on his coverage of the Vietnam War. Yet as an old man he covered the Iraq War. Now he's back at his home in Korea writing for the Christian Science Monitor, and authoring more books on Asia...about six in all so far. Then there's one of my mentors Colin Dangaard, a real life Crocodile Dundee. He left his Outback Australian home to learn journalism from the old way, on the job, and then literally worked his way around the world on newspapers, spending around six months to a year at each job before moving on. This included sailing a leaky yacht from South Africa to Florida and years later returning to his first love, horses by establishing the Australian Stock Saddle Co. in, of all places, Malibu, California. And has just published a novel "Talking to Horses."  No, this is a story of an ordinary guy who through work, luck and perseverance wound up doing extraordinary things...at least some seemed that way to me. Yet, today, more than anything else, I am one of the dying breed of people who can bear witness to the revolution that has changed newsgathering and dissemination forever.  I can still recall holding a printer's stick and setting type by hand in my high school print shop. Then, a short time later, sitting at a Linotype machine, watching a bar of lead melt in its reservoir as I typed out my story.... a story that would be hand carried, still hot, to the lock-up, a large metal frame in which the solidified lead would be secured ready for the presses. A few years down the line, I learned to deal with offset lithography as printing went from hot to cold type. The hot metal was replaced by hot wax used to fix the paper type -- as it was -- to the paper layout sheet from which a photo was made to help mold the sheet metal casting. The age of moveable type was over.... now it came in massive blocks ready to print. But even then, the media industry had no idea how computers and the Internet would soon change everything to such a degree that they would relegate Gutenberg's medieval marvel to insignificance.

Gilbert I like the book, as I said it is an interesting story and has historical facts about the west and the north country. Good reading.

Newman Although I love the story of Bannack, Montana and the 1860s gold rush, this book, that I approached with interest, was truly a disappointment to say the least. There was apparently little research done by the author, but most of all, it was written in such a poor manner that I often chuckled out loud. For example, he overly uses proper nouns where simple pronouns like "he" and "they" would be much more appropriate. Perhaps he thinks the readers have very short term memories. There is also very much redundancy of subplots and quite a bit of unnecessary storyline. I do not recommend this book if you love history.

If the Terabuel Collective wanted to recruit Werekin for their fledgling army, they sure as hell sent the wrong person. “More food for the larder,’’ a scary sounding Werekin growled. “You have others like me here?” it was all I really wanted to know. I hated Werekin almost as much as I hated Tremon. “Food doesn’t speak, it whimpers for its life,” it said as a rifle butt slammed into my back, sending me to the ground. “I am an emissary for the Terabuel Collective,” I gasped. “I have an offer for your pack.” The legal binder ordering me to make the offer, done and recorded on my implant. I smiled. Now it was play time. I saw human foot prints on the ground as I was being dragged back towards their den. Fuck. The hard way, then. I need to find a better job.

I had high hopes for the next book in the series. Pack Leader did not disappoint. The author created an interesting imaginary world. Drake Collins is a seriously flawed hero, but he's also loyal and willing to go to any length to accomplish his goals. He makes unpopular decisions and sacrifices to ensure that the human world survives. Sefia is an amazing heroine. She's faithful, strong and a sensible calming force for Drake. The secondary characters enhanced the story, especially Jarvald and Tammy. I enjoyed the witty back and forth banter. It was fascinating how the different species related to one another and the steps they would take to insure that their species not only survived but ruled.Pros: compelling worldbuilding, complex characters, political intrigue, backstabbing, lots of action, well-written battle scenes, vivid scenery, laugh out loud humorCons: I can't think of a single oneI would highly recommend this story to all sci-fi lovers or anyone looking for a great read. I will definitelyread the next book in the series.
