She has a joie de vivre that pours out every page of her books. Having read Book 5 GREED IN PARADISE, Book 6 REVENGE IN PARADISE, and Book 7 KIDNAPPED IN PARADISE it is an anticipated thrill to join this fun loving writer in SWINDLED IN PARADISE Book 8 as she continues to pull off this Florida Keys mysteries series (The Florida Keys Mystery Series), having established a committed audience. According to the scant bio she states, ` I wanted to create books with a wide-range of unforgettable characters, with heat and romance, and lots of guns. It wouldn't be complete without a slice of humor and charm. My personal ad would read: There's nothing a new pair of shoes can't cure. Redhead. Long legs. There's nothing like a strawberry-lemonade in summer. Favorite activity: Filling my pockets with seashells. An avid rule follower when eating Animal Cookies: Broken ones get eaten first, match up the rest, duplicates next, line them up favorite to not, least favorite go first. South Florida is my home, with my ungrateful rescue cats, and where Mother Nature takes out her bad attitude in the form of hurricanes.' So even before beginning Chapter 1 you love her!By now the devotees of Deborah Brown's leading lady Madison Westin and her friends and acquaintances and favorite hangouts expect the action and the fun of these serial books to take off from page one. And SWINDLED IN PARADISE is no exception: ‘Sexy sleuths Madison and Fab race to uncover the truth behind a horrific crime… before a loved one pays the ultimate price. Beautiful Tarpon Cove has everything you’d expect from a paradise retreat: Blue waters, white sand and … murder? With deadly secrets and dark dealings brewing beneath the surface of Tarpon Cove, Madison and Fab are caught in a race against time to uncover the truth behind the grisly murder, which may only be the tip of the iceberg….’And that is the frothy speed of action that continues through the book. Readers have met Madison's mother and her sleazy boyfriend Jimmy Spoon because they glide in easily into the story. Madison and roommate/best friend Fabiana Merceau, living in the inherited from the aunt's Key West home, mystery, frank sexual innuendoes, mystery, snappy and at times naughty dialogue - everything that makes Deborah Brown's style a good read. She has her serial genre down pat! And boy is it great to have her back! Grady Harp, October 15

Maddie & Fab are still doing "not dangerous" jobs for Brick, tending the crazies at the cottages, dealing with psycho girl & boyfriends, & trying to solve a murder before the murderer finds them. I'm going to quote from the back cover, as it says it all: "Swindled in Paradise will take you on a high-speed ride through non-stop action adventure, romance, & suspense, & leave you begging for more." Please take the time to read this entire series in order to fully appreciate the characters & their interwoven relationships. You will not regret it.P.S. The only things I missed were not enough time with Miss January & her dead stuffed cat, & the reunion of Joseph & his blowup doll Svetlana.

Another Joyride in Paradise By Marta Cheng In Swindled in Paradise, author Deborah Brown takes us back to the tropical town of Tarpon Cove, a small slice of Floridian paradise where Madison Westin and her BFF, Fab, go the rescue of Didier, Fab’s hot model boyfriend, accused of murdering Lauren Grace, Vice-President of 1000 Ocean Boulevard Corporation, a real estate development firm based in Miami. Luckily, Madison and Fab have no shortage of friends and family who are only too eager to help; Creole, Madison’s hottie boyfriend who has a limitless supply of connections, thanks to his job as an undercover drug cop and also Philipa (Phil) Grey, a bartender at Jake’s, a dive bar that Madison owns. Phil is a third-year law student who has a very successful side business selling information and is more than happy to help her boss by hunting down some much-needed information.Despite the fact that the book focuses on the solving of a murder, there’s an underlying element of wacky humor that makes Swindled in Paradise, as well as the other books in the series, so entertaining – helped in no small part by the cast of wacky characters that are as colorful as the Florida scenery in which the book is set. What reader can resist the likes of Miss January, the foul-mouthed (but somehow lovable) alcoholic with cancer – to whom doctors had given a death sentence but she’d forgotten to RSVP; her boyfriend, Score, who’s also an alcoholic and is at least twice her age; Professor Crum, a retired professor with an off-the-charts IQ who has a remarkable green thumb and a penchant for running around in public wearing only his skivvies; Huck, the neighbor from the building next door, an exhibitionist who constantly urinates outside his bathroom window and certainly last, but not least, Madison’s own mother, whose boyfriend is a young badass called Jimmy Spoon, with whom she shares cigars and Tennessee whiskey, straight up. Each one of these characters add a layer of levity to the storyline, giving readers an entertaining and delightful joyride. Highly recommended!

Consistent to his era of west coast camp logger, institutionalized to the monoculture from extended stays, timber faller Nils 'Nellie' Olson faced the reality he too had succumbed to the eventuality----warehoused between a younger, hippy influenced, 'Sixties' floatplane generation, and the fixed lifestyles of the traditional old school loggers, who had spiraled to lost souls, locked in a camp to skid row bar rotation. Conditioned to resist change, a letter delivered on the eve of the logging division's Christmas shutdown was the first in a series of plots to move him into position for a later letter received at sea, where his reaction to its contents would be solely his. Deliberate that the news would find him mingled to a range of shipboard backgrounds and nationalities, by voyage end Nils realized he'd never go back to the same woods again. Easier to go ahead, than back, continued in the direction he'd been posed returned to his prairie roots for a new start, and to keep an eye on the prize. Author's note: This is a work of fiction. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A smart, sexy heroine and intrigue in the City of Lights. What more could a reader ask for? By Paula in Chicago Ms. Evanoff delivers a story that is both intriguing and artfully told in her first novel, Foliage. As a former Parisian, I loved the setting of the book. However, it's the skillfully developed plot with a mix of intrigue, financial thriller and romance that draws the reader in until they are completely immersed in the world of Louise Moscow. The title character and her exploits brought me back to an unforgettable and exciting time in Europe during the fall of the Iron Curtain. Through the voice and the actions of Louise, the author deftly revisits the intricacies of the many moving parts of politics in the early 1990s. It’s both nostalgic and relevant in our present day. A thoroughly enjoyable story, and one that has me anxiously awaiting the continuing adventures of the heroine in the next Louse Moscow novel. Fabulous novel, which I highly recommend!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Spy Thriller Indeed! By Goodrich We all have a little spy in us. Whose car is parked at the neighbor’s house? Why is my husband being so mysterious lately? What is my wife up to now? That’s kid’s stuff compared to what Lorraine Evanoff delivers in Foliage. She puts us in the big league with her very believable Louise Moscow, a fast-rising star in international banking who becomes an unwitting spy in a true and already forgotten banking scandal. What I love about Louise Moscow is that she seems so real, from savoring a stack of pancakes in her mom’s cozy kitchen to creeping through the murky catacombs of Paris. If you love history, you will love Evanoff’s interesting side stories. If you love travel, you will love Moscow’s exotic jaunts. If you love spy thrillers, you will really love Foliage! I can’t wait for Louise Moscow’s next thrill-packed adventure. Stay tuned.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. WOW!! WHAT A PAGE-TURNER! By Ellen Beaucoup Finally an intelligent romantic spy thriller! I received an ARC of Lorraine Evanoff’s new book, Foliage: An International Spy Thriller in exchange for an honest review. It starts off fast and keeps you hooked. The series heroine Louise Moscow is sexy, brazen and fearless in business and in love. The twists and turns keep you guessing and wanting to read on. Plus the historic events blew my mind and the depictions of the exotic locations made me feel like I was there the way Dan Brown does. I can’t wait to read book 2!! Hurry, Ms. Evanoff!

THE ORIGINAL SEX GATES NOVEL This is the Sex Gates novel as originally written by Darrell Bain alone. It has a completely different ending, and it contains one more major character and several more supporting ones. In this original version, all questions are answered and all issues resolved in this one book. It is being published now in response to all the fan mail and interest the trilogy generated?and continues to generate. The Sex Gates has already become a science fiction cult classic and this book should be a significant addition to the sex gates universe. Author’s Note I wrote The Sex Gates in 1993 at a frenzied pace, completing the first draft in one month flat. In looking over my original novel and the one ten years later which includes Jeanine Berry as a collaborator, I am unable to judge which version I like best. That is for readers to decide. I can only say that going back over the old manuscript helped me recapture most of the original emotion and intensity with which I first got this notion into novel form. When I revisited The Original Sex Gates, I was reminded of the two versions of Arthur C. Clark’s grand stories, Against The Fall Of Night and The City And The Stars. I have been reading both versions over and over for many years and continue to enjoy both of them to this day. I sincerely hope you can do the same with the two different versions of The Sex Gates.

I'm fascinated by the idea of being able to go through a gate and coming out younger, healthier body which is also of the opposite sex. The story line, once you decide to suspend a certain amount of plausability, is very amusing and thought provocing. I have read both versions a couple of times each and still find them good. I like imagining what I would do under the same circumstances. Read and enjoy!

Brown This is a tighter book with a more direct resolution to the question of the origin of the "Sex Gates" than the three volume series written with a collaborator. Bain thinks this is better and I agree with him.The three volume set just dragged things out and the numerous "sexcapades" got boring as the novelty of gender reversal wears off. This original story got the point across without killing it with repetition. I actually never finished the 3rd book in the series because I got bored with the stretched out exploration of the missing aliens, sex gates used to travel to other planets and so forth.Looking forward to reading the 2nd volume in the "Original Sex Gates" story.

The ways in which the characters in it deal with the changes that happen is what makes it a great story. One cannot read this without at least asking the question, "What would I do if this happened to me?" Merely asking the question is likely to change some perspectives. For those who read the trilogy, this is a better ending and a tighter story, although the trilogy has its merits, too.I first became interested in Darrell Bain's writing by stumbling across "Human by Choice", which similarly brings out the result of a shocking event in the things the believable characters do. That one is a great read, too.

I highly recommend it for beginners and experienced pro's as well. There's something for everyone here. I especially enjoyed the section on "nn Hour Film Races" and I think that the author really tells it like it is and points out some considerations that people new to the process may not think about. All in all, this book is way more valuable than the asking price. Get it, read it and learn!

Lots of great information, especially regarding deferred pay By Kevin S Ryan In front of the camera or behind it, the Berg bible is a must read for all. Lots of great information, especially regarding deferred pay, nudity and 48 hour film festivals. Oh, and also actually getting paid. Everybody involved in film should read this.

Felix Allaben is a haunted man. Haunted by the memory of his wife, gunned down in a mugging gone awry. Haunted by his responsibilities as a single father of a teenage girl. And, as Bloody Lane opens, haunted by the murder of Curtis Gwynn, an ex-cop whom Allaben had known when both served in the Baltimore Police Department. Gwynn is found dressed in the uniform of a Civil War re-enactor on the hallowed grounds of the Antietam battlefield—shot through the head.

Allaben is a special investigator with the Department of Justice. He has been summoned by a shadowy official in Washington to get to the bottom of the crime. Working in tandem with the local sheriff, Felix weaves his way through a maze of leads, lies, and dead ends in his effort to make sense of this first death and of others that unexpectedly follow. In so doing, he comes up against an armed, active, neo-Confederate hate group operating out of a local gun club and bent on domestic terrorism.

The suspects are many. Among them are an unstable realtor with whom Gwynn was having an affair; her alcoholic, hot-headed husband; their son, a Civil War enthusiast who’s been upset by the unsavory lifestyles of his parents; her brother, a rising politician, and a retired Navy contractor, as well as other members of the aforementioned militia.

Bloody Lane is set in and around Frederick, Maryland, a small city with an intriguing past. The infamous Civil War battle of Antietam, fought nearby, yielded the single bloodiest day in American history. The conclusion is both violent and unsettling.

Bloody Lane, by Martin Lee, Matthew Fleury

Review "A Justice Department investigator's latest case is the killing of a Civil War re-enactor, his body cropping up on Maryland's Antietam Battlefield in this debut thriller."A body on Park Service property makes it federal jurisdiction, or "close enough" for Felix Allaben to take the murder case. Allaben knows the victim, Curtis Gwynn, dead from a gunshot wound and dressed in a Union uniform. Gwynn was a whistleblower against dirty cops back when he and Allaben were at the Baltimore Police Department. And a week before his death, he called Allaben, convinced that a Toyota had tried to run him over. Allaben's certainly not in want of suspects, and not just irate police officers. Gwynn had an affair with a married woman and, on the night of his murder, had argued with various people at a local tavern. When the park ranger who found Gwynn's body turns up dead, also on the battlefield, authorities surmise it's a mere accident--a fall from the observation tower. But there may be something else going on, as evidenced by the baseball bat-wielding men who warn Allaben to stop his meddling. Allaben's probe leads him to a potentially dangerous militia group and a rather dubious politician. Then the investigator nearly dies in a fire, which could mean that the thugs are making good on their threat. While the protagonist remains delightfully complex and sympathetic, he is definitely flawed. He recently lost his wife, Rebecca, at the hands of a mugger who shot them both. Rebecca was psychologically unwell, and Allaben hadn't exactly been faithful to her. Notwithstanding, as an investigator, he more than excels. Allaben, for example, often asks questions when he knows the answers, like the meaning behind a snake tattoo, an emblem for the militia group. Lee and Fleury pile on probable killers and clues, but Allaben himself sporadically acknowledges the "vague" evidence and the fact that, still late in the story, he's "getting nowhere." The final act, however, kicks red herrings to the wayside and zeroes in on a gratifying reveal--with an extra twist at the very end."A slow-building murder tale, but the complicated hero and serpentine wrap-up make it a worthy mystery." __ Kirkus Reviews"In a year when some Presidential candidates seem intent on pandering tothe very worst racist and reactionary elements in America, along comesthis book. At its core a murder mystery, Bloody Lane sets itself in two civil wars, the one fought 150 years ago at places like Antietam andthe other being fought today involving shadowy "resistance" groups benton turning back the clock. As Felix Allaben tries to unravel a mysteriousdeath on a Civil War battlefield, he comes into contact with some of the darker forces in American politics. The ending is a real shocker, andleaves one wanting to see more of Allaben in what is surely only thebeginning of a series." -- Eric Lee, journalist, author, activist"A body lies dead on the battlefield at Antietam. Nothing unusual there -- so did 23,000 others, victims of the bloodiest day of the Civil War ... however, the time is today, not 1862, and the dead man is a victim of murder, not war. So begins this riveting, intricately plotted, beautifully written novel, with a rich cast of characters and a plot that brilliantly parallels the events of September 17, 1862..." -- Robert Leonard Reid, author of Arctic Circle and Mountains of the Great Blue Dream"Loved it! If you're a Civil War buff, you won't be able to put this book down. But even if you know nothing at all about that history, you'll quickly be hooked by an ingenious plot and a fascinating cast of characters. Martin Lee and Matthew Fleury are natural-born story-tellers, and I congratulate them for keeping me guessing right up until the surprising climax. Bloody Lane is a bloody good read!" -- Dr. Krin Gabbard, Professor Emeritus, Stony Brook University, author of Black Magic and Better Git It in Your Soul: An Interpretive Biography of Charles Mingus"Felix Allaben is a vividly drawn, hard-boiled character in the tradition of Philip Marlowe or Sam Spade. After a murder at historic Antietam Battlefield, Detective Allaben gets pulled into a murky and dangerous world, where nothing is as it appears. Stylish, taut, complex..." -- Justin Martin, author of Rebel Souls: Walt Whitman and America's First Bohemians and Genius of Place: The Life of Frederick Law Olmsted

One of the Year's Best New Crime Novels By Robert Passikoff As a reader addicted to crime fiction, it's a joy to find a new book clearly authored by writers who understand their craft and the genre. The story is an interesting blend of today and yesterday and there's a nice counterpoint to the plot, especially for history buffs. Felix Allaben, the book's special investigator, is special indeed. Characters are finely drawn, and if you haven't visited any Civil War battlefields, you'll feel like you were right there! This book is smart and enjoyable with a nice pace to the plot, so an intriguing read on several levels. My first thought upon finishing it was, "is there another?"

I visited the region recently, and that visit enriched my appreciation of the book. The book had me guessing from beginning to end. I'm usually good at predicting plot twists and hidden villains, but this book was a surprise throughout. Total fun read. I absolutely recommend it to mystery buffs or anyone knowledgeable about the Civil War battles in and around Antietam.
