The journey began eleven thousand years ago when the experiment was contaminated by civilization. Greed and fear then prevailed, and the perfect substance—the invisible force conducting the trials—left the planet. All that remained were dim memories of a paradise supplanted by avarice. In 2008, New York newspaper columnist, Norm Fuller, receives instructions from a mysterious voice. The writer is sent to explore the subterranean headquarters of C.A.U.S.E., a group of scientist working to revive the experiment. Their plans include eliminating ominous religions, corrupt politicians, and greedy businesses. Not surprisingly those factions are planning to destroy the group. Norm’s allegiance to C.A.U.S.E. solidifies after an assault on the engaging scientist Samantha Carbell. His responses are limited until the voice shocks him out of amnesia pertaining to long forgotten dangerous abilities. The newspaperman races against the odds to rescue his new love, and salvage the world’s last best chance for escaping the Long Journey Into Night.

You do not need to read the prior books as this story includes a flashback/recap of the other tales. The character have progressed in their lives and so has the underlying message of the stories. The author clearly put a lot of research into this book and through his characterization takes some fairly complex ideas, simplify them, and present them in such a logical manner that it is pretty hard to dispute. One example is how much we could accomplish if we were to use what was given to use and help each other out as a species vs. our aggressive individualism designed so only a few can "win" and keep "winning."The book ends with a message of hope and not an instantaneous movie ending type, but one that recognizes how we can all do our part to improve the world we live in so our children grow up in a better place. Something I think we all want.

Hopefully it is not to late for us to work for a more peaceful society and take better care of the earth. If so we may not have to take the "Long Journey Into Night".

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Review of Before We Leave By Barbarie E. Bowling In one of the latter chapters of the novel Before We Leave by Mari Collier, a bitter exchange starts between what had been a contented married couple when two would-be murderers force their way into the couple's home. The young pregnant wife, unknown to her husband, is the daughter of a man from a planet not in our solar system. As the inhabitants of this far distant planet, she can use her mind to control the minds of earthlings. As the robbers threaten murder, she mentally disables them causing her husband, a law officer, to express a fear that has been haunting him--he calls his wife a stranger and a demon, utterly immoral; and threatens to arrest her. She mentally stops him and declares the love she once had for him is dead, all the while experiencing birthing pangs. Her last poignant words, "Good-bye, Walter, good-bye, my love." mentally sent to him as she drives away, brought tears to this reviewer's eyes--a response that attests to Ms. Collier's skill as a word smith To this reviewer, the briefly described episode of the threatening tension building from the consequences of critical anatomical differences between the other-world visitors and their earthly hosts, who have no knowledge of either their origins or their mental powers, was an absolutely necessary action. Though painful to all parties involved, this bitter episode serves as a kind of cathartic experience for sensitive readers aware of the explosive situation created when one member of a union of two possesses overwhelming attributes and powers. Also, many, such as I, might fear that these outer-space people were lost forever in a world "they" never made and would pity both groups for their inability to fully accept the other--one by choice and the other as a result of ignorance. For those readers who have not had the pleasure of reading the first novel `in this series of three, the plot, though somewhat convoluted, is easy to follow. Almost two hundred years ago, humanoids from a far distant planet fled for their hostile environment. The hostile elements of this untamed environment set the stage for the next illustration of Ms. Collier's mastery of the writing craft. The selection that follows describes in part what happens when the Space Travelers' wives are visiting a neighboring ranch that is attacked by a band of Comanche. The males are out on the range. Their lives will be determined by how well its female visitors respond to the bloody invasion. The following scene, only partially given, illustrates Ms. Collier's apt ability to depict strong women in desperate circumstances:"Antoinette, scream in your mind for Lorenz," Anna said through set teeth."Why? Whatever for?" Toni, had heard of Anna's kenning ways, but never that Lorenz possessed any."Sometimes vhen two people love each other and something is not right, they sense it.Anna closed her eyes. Lorenz hadn't told her! Something was wrong. Her stomach was still making her dizzy and she fought back the nausea."Mina, stop screaming. Hide them!" She was shouting at her daughter."Mina, honey, toss me my purse," Toni called."Vhy?""There is a revolver in it. I'm a good shot with that, and it is not as heavy." "Mina, take that revolver and if the Indians make it to the bedroom door, shoot for the middle of the door. Du can do it!" "Mother McDonald, that would mean they'd kill them all!" "That vould be better than them taking them." Anna's voice was grim. The foregoing excerpt at first read seems simple and not as dramatic as one could wish, but consider what the author has accomplished in a few descriptive sentences and brief dialogue. The first obvious fact is the family members are in a high emotional state, some almost uncontrollable. Secondly, the fire-arm power is limited by the number and caliber of weapons, but we see that Anna, the heroine of this scene, makes the best possible use of limited resources. In brief, what Ms. Collier has portrayed for us in her own fashion, is the female counter-part of such fighting males as the Comanche warriors. It is reported that the Sioux warriors on the morning of the day they dressed for battle have said, "It's a good day to die." Or, as Hemingway suggested in The Sun Also Rises, "Style is grace under pressure."As a closing comment of this brief review of a fascinating novel, this writer assures readers that this novel, besides tense and furious action, rewards its readers with various panoramic views of a way of life slowly receding into a distant past.© 2/25/2012 Norman Rudnick

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Before We Leave is a superb novel! By Michele Maddox-grott As both a sci-fi and post Civil War fan, I read GATHER THE CHILDREN, Ms. Collier's first novel, which sets the stage for this sequel, BEFORE WE LEAVE. Her character development is fantastic: twists, turns and surprises kept me turning the pages. It is filled with historically accurate descriptions, masterful dialogues, interactions with the earthlings and the personal psychology of 'being' regardless of your heritage. I'm looking forward to the next Collier novel. Hope it's soon!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Mari Collier does it again! By Navy Mom CVN69 Another wonderful story from Mari Collier. While she wraps a whole lot of timeline into this book, (it picks up shortly after MacDonald's surgery in "Gather the Children") going all the way into the mid 20th Century, she keeps it moving and entertaining. It can be read as a standalone book and still be captivating, but it is much more interesting if read in sequence, beginning with Collier's story "Earthbound." Collier has an incredible talent for weaving American History and Lutheran Church history into a story that holds a reader's attention without being preachy or condescending, the end result being a book that gently nudges a reader’s mind into remembering historical points of interest along the way. If one begins with “Earthbound” than one knows the majority of the characters in “Before We Leave.” Collier does introduce a couple more generations of family in this volume, but you are never at a loss as to who they are. I do wish she had explained in more detail how Mac and Louella moved “The Golden One.” But no matter, the story is still suspenseful and a good read allround.

When Pandora was offered a small, uh, unofficial job aboard the majestic star-liner, The Titanian Queen, she jumped at the chance. After all, with an unlimited expense account, an entire new wardrobe, an open bar and more strings of pearls jewels and suchlike fripperies than you can shake an Art Deco-inlaid stick at, what more could a poor girl want? That was before the luckless if remarkably deserving passengers started dropping like Malbrovian womprats who have fallen out of their tree in the fungus jungles of Malbrovia. Are these deaths the result if the fiendish criminal only known as the Cat's Paw? Or Eduardo Manley and his especially trained Cavalcade of Otters - despite him not appearing in the book at all? Will renowned detective Emil Dupont, at some point, fail to get every single thing completely and utterly wrong? Is there the slightest chance that more than 25% of the reams and reams of technobabble will make some actual sense? Either way, Pandora better pull her finger out - before everybody gets it in the end. The Pandora Delbane Adventures are precisely what one would hope to expect, retooled for the twenty-first century in the vague hope of the author being able to buy a beer.

Davis I had a good time reading this, and I recommend it quite highly for anyone who had read too much and yet doesn't take themselves too seriously. Any Detective Adventure novel IN SPACE that can quote Julian of Norwich while sending up half-a-dozen genres and delivering a fairly tight resolution is all right by me. It could use a little bit more editing, but eh, it was cheap. Go on, buy it. The author (whom I do not know, but wouldn't mind meeting) wants some beer money, and that's a cause we can all get behind.

Gripping and inspired, a thrilling read right through By James Archibald I was sucked in right from the beginning, Mr Laine has done an amazing job of pulling you into a fantastical world that is unique, and yet not so far removed from our own.The characters are interesting and the hero is flawed in his humanity, giving him a real sense of personality, allowing the reader to connect with him in a really visceral way.I started reading this on my daily train trip, and as it was pulling into the station I found myself willing it not to be so,for the trip to continue just so I didn't have to put it down. Now, where is the next one Mr Laine, we're waiting with great anticipation.

McClain The writing in this tale paints a vivid picture of its characters as well as vividly describing the worlds in which these characters exist. I believe Laine and Domingo Ladron could jump right in with R.A. Salvatore and company in the Forgotten Realms series and weave some wicked good stories!

The development of the Carey Winslow character from a teenager in a small town into a business woman in a big city is quite well crafted. Carey’s issues seem real and how she handles them may be inspiring to a whole bunch of young adult readers wanting to read something other than science fiction. The thing with the sidekick / boyfriend Ronnie was hard to believe at first but her reasons for not wanting their relationship to become physical rang true to me when I thought about it. She was as complex as he was straight forward. Wouldn’t every woman like to meet a real gentleman at least once in her life? This book is a real page turner after you get started. It shows a lot of promise from a first time author who seems to be writing from firsthand experience.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Good Read and Hope There's More To Come By Robert K. This book dealt with a too common experience facing girls and young women, and in doing so presents a great example of overcoming the trauma and carrying on. To some, Carey may seem to have been relatively unaffected by her trauma and so her character may ring somewhat untrue, while to many others she will be a shining example of courage and determination. I enjoyed the mix of characters, both male and female, and also the details of the financial world. Altogether, a good read and I look forward to the author's second book.

Readers' Favorite"I very, very much enjoyed Primeval Origins: Light of Honor, Book 2. Author Brett Vonsik has done an absolutely amazing job in creating characters that readers will connect with and relate to, not always an easy feat in a work of fantasy." Readers' Favorite"As a reader, I always look for novels that keep me guessing what will happen next and this novel did that for me." Readers' Favorite "Primeval Origins: Light of Honor" by Brett VonsikPosted on January 8, 2016 by readerviewsBrettVonsikCelestial Fury Publishing (2015)ISBN 9780578172552Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (12/15)As I finished the last page of this novel, my first thought was, "Oh wow!" While I would like to be able to express something more articulate and impressive, this was what came to me. Even though "Primeval Origins: Light of Honor" by Brett Vonsik is the second book in a series, it stood well on its own. Because it is so exceptionally written, I would like to go back and read the first book and perhaps get a few blanks filled in. I also look forward to the next novel in this series. This epic fantasy begins in the future, introducing scientists from that time and two characters from the far distant past. The two ancient characters are warriors that have special gifts. When the vessel they are being carried on is attacked, the crew and the scientists aboard find themselves depending on these two men to help save them. Being that the attack was unexpected, there is a great deal of damage. Questions will arise in the readers mind about who these two warriors really are. Those questions are answered as the writer takes us way back in time, and we can seethe journey these young men were sent on when they were captured, along with some friends and family members of one of the men. As they endure horrible living conditions and abuse at the hands of their captors, they also begin to discover their gifts. Going into the future, the gifts are greatly put to use to help save themselves and others who seek them.I totally enjoyed reading "Primeval Origins: Light of Honor" by Brett Vonsik. I was moved by the characters and the author's vivid details of the conditions in which they were living. The personal evolvement of the characters was impressive, and it was both horribly suspenseful and entertaining to watch them put these talents to use. I feel that this series is destined to be recognized as a classic.

From the Author Primeval Origins: Paths of Anguish and Light of Honor are the  first two books in an epic saga that is much more than a single trilogy. Behind this first two books is a beyond epic storyline with a background spanning 65 million years and multiple civilizations that is filled with the challenges of moral choice and the battle against tyranny imposed by both godly and mortal adversaries. Rich in research and weaving into one grand story, humanity's ancient myths and legends, the Bible's Old and New Testament accounts, the teachings of the Qur'an, ancient alien theory, angelic lore, contemporary landscapes, conventional and forbidden archaeologies, and the latest scientific findings in paleontology, Primeval Origins sculpts a vivid world, both past and future, exploring the depth of what it is to be human and answering the questions asked across the earth...Who are we? Where do we come from? Why do we exist? The ancient story is an intricate foundation to the future story simultaneously being told in the prologues and epilogues of each book. Buckle up and enjoy the ride. We're just getting started.Brett Vonsik

Cuadro Primeval Origins: Light of Honor doesn't quite pick readers like me up where Brett Vonsik's first volume left off. Instead I am hooked in the middle of a chase, with all the different characters I know from the first book present but rearranged, and with gaps in my knowledge of time and place from where I last knew the story had been going. Despite this being very disconcerting, I find the protagonists in the middle of a dangerous event, one that may spell the end for the main characters I am just touching base with again. Needless to say the adrenaline is pumping this early in the tale, so I start flipping pages as quickly as I can to find out what will happen to the characters I know while trying to remember what state they were in since I saw them last. I make it to the end breathless, excited for what could happen to the characters in the third volume. And because I am still trying to get my bearings after what I read, I start reading the story again!Intrepid graduate student/archaeologist/paleontologist Nikki Rikks finds herself and her lead professor Dr. Shawn Anders swiftly sailing on a boat that technically doesn't exist; at least no government in the world admits to Wind Runner's existence. They are being chased by even deadlier U.N. craft whose existence is not public record either, all because of momentous finds during one of their digs. There is the weaponry considered technologically advanced even for modern times embedded in the bones of a newly discovered dinosaur species, and the two creatures in stasis found some distance from the ancient bones. One looks human enough: Rogaan, a half-Tellen teenager whose coming of age Nikki was able to view and witness while she herself was exposed to a stasis field in the chamber they found in the dig. The other is a humanoid from a race Nikki learned are called Evendiir, named Aren. Time lines mix for Nikki as she witnesses Rogaan's and Aren's meeting in the past while she relies on their improbable powers and weaponry in the present to protect the uncanny Wind Runner from its deadly hunters. At this point in the review, a potential reader of Brett Vonsik's second book might think it prudent to pick up the first volume, Primeval Origins: Paths of Anguish. Although this second novel seems like it is only a transitional story between the first volume and the the upcoming third one in the series, I say the author's writing style of piling one action- or tension-filled event after another renders the need for reading volume 1 first unnecessary. All readers, regardless of them having read the first volume or not, will feel like they are have been deposited onto a whirling tornado or the crest of a tsunami, and the best thing to do is ride it out to the very end. I find it to be a very exhilarating ride! There is a lot of physical action, fights, and explosions, and even the internal conflicts of each character lend to the story's fast pace. In the scenes Nikki witnesses in the past, Rogaan has left his uncertain stage of "Can I? Should I? Would I?" and begins to be more reactive, pushed to desperation by the deprivations and injustices his friends and family suffer. Nikki's first viewing of Aren in the scenes of the past shows him to be so paranoid that the shifts and jumps in his own mind are pretty action-packed already. In the present, both are practically super heroes: disoriented and confused super heroes, but awesome to behold even at half-power. This second volume is a page-turner, whether you know much about Rogaan and Nikki or not.The Who and the What is very shifty and fast-paced in Primeval Origins: Light of Honor. The Why however permeates throughout the action-filled tale - acknowledge the plight of the oppressed and downtrodden, then answer the call to defend them against the tyrannies that bury their voice. Whether readers decide to read the first book to get a background on the characters or like myself read Primeval Origins: Light of Honor again to take note of anything I missed during the first whirlwind ride, they will find a very satisfying tale and will anticipate the coming of the third installment of this action-packed series. Recommended.

By Amazon Customer Loved this book even more than the first - it was faster-paced, wrapped up a lot of story threads that were in the first novel that were nagging at me while leaving plenty of mystery for the next book, and was definitely a bit darker than the first in the series. Reminiscent of my favorite fantasy novels from the 90s and 2000s, reading Primeval Origins: Light of Honor brought me back to the joy of reading the first books in a series and being enthralled by a new world and perspective on storytelling when I thought I had read all there was to read in the fantasy world. Props to the new author - keep the Primeval Origins books coming as fast as possible!

Heylmun As the second book in the series, Light of Honor continues the gripping narrative begun in the first book with the same intense, descriptive style. The connections between the near future prologue and epilogue and the prehistoric main text of the first book become much more tangible, tying the two stories together into an exciting adventure I wasn't anticipating, despite enjoying the first book immensely. I can't wait to read the next one.
