This trilogy is fascinating, utterly engrossing, with characters the reader can identify with, heroes and heroines who are dedicated to doing the right thing is politically-complex, often deadly circumstances. If you like adventure and action thrillers that actually make you think, and occasionally challenge your beliefs, look no farther.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Cautionary Tale By Phil Castelucci Whether the Balkanisation of America is something you fear or something you hope for,Billy Roper's trilogy can be viewed as either a terrifying end or a brave new beginning. It may either be a work of fiction or something that has already started.Either way,it will entertain as well as make you reflect on the path and ultimate destination of the races and the future of our own people. The characters are believable,as are their motivations, which is something lacking in many books of this genre.I found myself cheering for them at times and grieving for their hurts.A book that makes me think while it entertains is what I always hope for each time I begin a new one. This time I found three. Now if you will excuse me,I have a few more Billy Roper books to read.

Walters Omega Reign works with the premise of an "apocalyptic" event and the reaction of various superheroes and supervillains as they try to adapt to a world that no longer needs them or, in the case of the supervillains, a world that no longer gives them a challenge in their criminal escapades. In addition to those two camps are a few 'neutral' supers who are trying to get by with their anonymity intact. There are a few curve balls that Mr. Coffin throws in the works about the nature of certain heroes superpowers and how they change in conjunction with the event. One conflict in particular that occurred before the event was a determining factor in the current lines drawn between the supers is particularly interesting... I would rather not go into too much detail as it would ruin some of the revelations in the book as well as the various questions and mysteries that blossom in its pages that I encourage readers to discover on their own. This is the first book in a series and I eagerly await the next installment.

Superhuman and Human, Omega Reigns By Joe Pace With "Omega Reign", Bill Coffin has explored the superhero trope as only a true believer can, in a brisk and wonderful read that pays equal homage to the Marvel classic "Secret Wars" and Stephen King's "The Stand". His non-quite-Earth is populated with an imaginative (and brilliantly-named) menagerie of super-folk, both "capes" (good guys) and masks (bad guys) locked in the constant and eternal tug of war that will be familiar to comic readers and moviegoers alike. Coffin takes advantage of the literary format to delve into the psyches of his omega-powered protagonists, granting operatic depth and humanity to his characters. It feels like the opening salvo of a longer, more complicated skein, and if this first act is any indication, we're in for a heck of a ride.

Ambitious young Mage Samara hits a dead end in her research to unlock the secrets of a recently unearthed arcane manuscript. Out of options, she commissions Darian, a warrior of the Manu tribe, to lead her to one of his people's renowned seers. The secret they discover, however, leaves them hunted at every turn as they become entangled in a plot to tear open a portal to Hell, releasing a legion of bloodthirsty demons upon the world. Thrown into a struggle neither fully understand, and complicated by a mutual attraction that neither will acknowledge, the pair must race hundreds of miles before the sun rises on the equinox to head off a cataclysm that only Samara can stop. That's assuming Darian can keep them both alive long enough to reach their goal. But between assassins, demons, fae, and the very land itself trying to kill them, the odds are not in their favor.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Good story line and hey this guy can write... By Richard L. Barrett This is a first published book by the author, Matthew Mitchell. It hardly seems possible he is so smooth, but he has been writing for many years according to the book cover. (Good job hanging in there.) The story starts well and gets the reader (me in this case and I'm not that easy) engaged. I took the book on a trip to read on the plane but found myself reading it every night. By the third night I had to force myself to put the book down so I could function the next day. At almost 400 pages it took me a five days to finish reading at night. Interesting handling at the end of the book and an epilog clearly sets up a series of book possibilities with these same characters. The editor missed a couple of words, minor but not that annoying, and for some reason the Epilog was printed twice in my copy. Clearly a first printing but I was surprised to see such a simple error get to press... Otherwise, Holon Publishing great job taking on a new author... I think if Mathew keeps this up the series could be a great find both for the publisher and the readers. Matthew definitely has some talent as a writer and it looks like a great world full of new ideas and fast fun reading could be headed our way.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Refreshing and exciting in all the right places By KingsRook I had been very tired of fantasy for awhile. I had seen the tropes done to death. This book was a very refreshing change. It opens similarly, but moves briskly into territory that isn't just about spell-slinging wizards, sword-swinging heroes, and arrow-launching archers. It's reasonable with tragedy and the challenges the characters face that other novels might simply gloss over which are INTERESTING. I've rarely read an accurate assessment of the challenges of riding a horse for days or weeks. Where other authors treat horses as modern modes of transportation, the reality of the times is more apparent here.Soon enough in the book, the chase is on. It pays attention to its own pace and twists the path enough to keep ahead of at least an average reader.I was eager to see how the story turned out for the protagonists, and that was something I'd personally been missing for awhile. I had stopped caring about fantasy protagonists. Finally, here I found humans.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great and refreshing fantasy By Jason S. Walls Mitchell does an excellent job of taking traditional fantasy ideas and giving a new, detailed, and consistent spin on them. Though technically written in first person, he changes perspectives between characters so that it does not feel like it at all; I found myself reading it in 3rd person anyway! This helped get inside the character's heads and experience their different perspectives from their different cultures. I can't wait to find out more about the world!

Another exciting volume in the popular high-seas nautical adventure series featuring the dashing and debonair naval commander Thomas Kydd   Word has come from the British ambassador Arbuthnot that the neutral Turks are being wooed by the French and if the ancient city of Constantinople falls into their hands, Napoleon’s route to India will be completely unfettered and his plans for world domination a reality. Concerned for his safety, Arbuthnot is demanding a large fleet presence to take him off and bring the Turks to their senses. Meanwhile Kydd’s friend and confidential secretary, Nicholas Renzi, has assumed a new and dangerous role that he can never make public. He engineers a coup in the Topkapi Palace that turns the tables on the French but at the cost of both infidel nations being ejected from the Ottoman Empire. 6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Also a Renzi Land Adventure By re5jim This is the fifteenth volume in the Kydd series. Any of these can stand alone, but of course they're so much better if read in order.Pasha sees our heroes through a few transitions. First we finally find out if Renzi will ever marry Kydd's sister. She has been waiting for him to make up his mind and so have we. Both Thomas Kydd and Mr. Renzi gain new titles which force them to part company as Renzi takes on new roles both at home and abroad. In fact, Pasha may seem to be more about Renzi than Captain Kydd. Never fear. Stockwin doesn't let him have the whole book. There is plenty of excitement aboard ship. We get the usual battles and fires and the conversation between sailors we've come to know as well as a few new characters.Historical fiction blends real events with fictional characters. There is a very interesting note from the author that tells of his trip to Turkey, the people, the buildings, and the history that inspired him to write such an intriguing cloak and dagger adventure.I was delighted to win a copy from Goodreads Giveaways.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Thomas and Nicholas are at it again By cbobcant This was another great story in the Kydd series. Like all of the others it has moments of dashing adventure and intrigue. I have to say I did not see how Thomas and Nicholas were going to get out of the situations they became involved. But as usual they make it through, now you may say that I have told the end of the story, but yes and no. You know that Thomas and Nicholas are going to come out on top. The thing is how they manage to come out on top and that is what is worth reading. If you are a fan of the Age of Sails genre then do read this one. If you are a fan of the Thomas Kydd stories then read this one. One thing I would like to say about these books while they are fiction you can not help to be intrigued by the element of history woven into the stories. In fact these stories have caused me to read several non-fiction books on this amazing period of history.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Somewhat heavy. The accurate use of complex Turkish/Ottoman Empire ... By Denis Somewhat heavy. The accurate use of complex Turkish/Ottoman Empire words, names, phrases presenteda challenge to this reader - but expanded the authenticity one has come to expect from a Stockwin novel.

Josiah is well on his way to recovering from his attempt to keep the Hahn-Wright Survey Station from falling onto the city of Beijing, China. He has just made his first public appearance and has returned to his quarters at the Wheeling Medical Center. Waiting for him are Doctors Axel and Ruth Weissman, and they offer him the position of primary pilot for a project that is intended to develop a faster than light drive. On its surface, the success of any project would seem to be a straightforward sequence of events: Have a basic idea, prove the basic idea, put together the people and physical and financial structures needed, and go to work. However, as with all things of complexity, it’s never quite that simple, is it? The possibility of an FTL drive and a path to the stars will, if not immediately, then eventually, turn the thoughts of some people to thinking about the wealth and power that this technology could deliver. It is possible that developing an FTL drive will be easier than trying to keep from being murdered while you do it.

THE ALIEN PROPHECY is a lightning-paced adventure…utterly unpredictable right up to its stunning conclusion.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. It's okay, but there's no prophecy, just a long chase story By Anthony Ho A decent, interesting story with good pacing, but undone by odd lapses in the story. For example, one of the characters is supposed to be French, yet when he answers "Yes" he says "Wei" instead of the proper "Oui." It's like he's suddenly speaking Chinese instead of French. Or the bad guys explode anti-matter to destroy evidence, but use a shield capable of containing the direct conversion of matter to energy....which means the equipment used to generate and power such an incredible shield must of a necessity be left behind and not destroyed, only that obvious flaw just gets ignored.Sadly, one of the more interesting characters-an abused, superintelligent dog--gets under-utilized and ultimately just thrown away.Still, the story has its charms. The pacing is good, the mysteries are intriguing enough to make the reader want to know more, and it has a bit of sci-fi/religion discussion to bring some philosophy into the story. Vaught Heppner has written better stories, but this one is still readable. It's essentially a long chase story that climaxes in the evildoer's headquarters as you'd expect. The Kindle version I received has a title book that says "The Creation Matrix," while the inner pages say "The Alien Prophecy." My guess is that somehow, I got a cover for either the second book in the series or that author Heppner changed the title along the way but forgot to update the cover and the description on Amazon.
