From the Author What was the inspiration behind both "The Slush Pile Brigade" and "Blind Thrust", the novel stolen from fledgling writer Nick Lassiter in the novel? "Blind Thrust" seems more closely aligned to your day-to-day work as an environmental hydrogeologist, while "The Slush Pile Brigade" seems like an adventure in your imagination. I actually wrote "Blind Thrust" before "The Slush Pile Brigade." The inspiration behind "Blind Thrust" is my experiences in California and Texas as a registered professional geologist in assessing earthquake hazards and fault classifications. I wrote the novel and my agent was pitching it to publishers in New York. I began wondering, "What if a mega-best-selling author was having writer's block, needed a good story, and actually colluded with his literary agent to steal a promising novel by a no-name author from the slush pile, an author who happened to be an expert in his field like me and had written a scientifically-accurate novel like "Blind Thrust?" I wondered to myself how I would try and seek revenge. By Mo The best fiction is so closely linked to reality that it’s hard to separate the two. So it is with Blind Thrust, Samuel Marquis’s second book -- a work of fiction that builds from a foundation of reality and a ripped-from-the-headlines plot.Marquis, an accomplished hydrogeologist and a sought-after expert in matters of groundwater contamination and hydrogeology, puts his seismic spin on the present-day phenomena of man-made earthquakes caused by deep well injections. And he never lets up on the gas pedal as he take readers on a trip through a series of unusual earthquakes, which cause death, destruction and devastation across Colorado’s Front Range.The story features a unique protagonist, environmental geologist Joseph Higheagle, a Cheyenne, and his grandfather, Chief John Higheagle, a delightful sidekick who brings levity and a sense of magic to the story.The book’s tight plot line takes off from the first chapter, when a major earthquake strikes in eastern Colorado. Higheagle discovers that billionaire oil man Charles Prometheus Quantrill is actually causing the earthquakes through illegal injections of hazardous waste deep into the earth. Sound familiar? 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Between a Rock and Hard Case By safety Blind Thrust was a great mix of earth sciences and suspense. I enjoyed reading it and after about 30 pages was hooked and had to pick the book up every time I had a chance. The main hero would be the type of guy you want to meet and talk with all night. The story involves a lot of geology and a lot of interesting stuff about the earth and it’s movement and then the story grips you. Marquis writes in so much detail about the characters and their surroundings it’s like you’re looking though a window at the scene. I like Blind Thrust so much I’ve started to read another one of his books, “The Slushpile Brigade”

Bork When reviewers proclaim that a book "has it all," a prospective reader is justified in wondering what is included under that umbrella. How about an exciting fictional narrative built on contemporary geo- and eco-science? "Blind Thrust" features a Native American environmental geologist, Joe Higheagle, and a well-developed cast of characters, including a greedy billionaire who poses as a proponent of "green" causes. The author is a professional hydro-geologist who provides abundant interesting details about the workings of the Earth and modern geo-technology, without ever getting bogged down in sleep-inducing minutiae. Blind thrusts are real, but cryptic. They represent subsurface movement that can cause earthquakes but do not form surface faults. Injection of large volumes of liquid, including toxic wastes, into deep wells has been a factor in a number of earthquakes. "Blind Thrust" follows Joe Higheagle and EPA's Nina Curry as they try to understand the cause of quakes in Colorado. The panoply of characters is rich and multi-dimensional. Even the 'bad guys' are well developed. The billionaire CEO is an ardent supporter of natural history (yes, there are real-world parallels), and the assassin is Yale educated. As a result, the narrative proceeds in a fast-paced mode with no simplistic characters and no hard-to-believe events. The "story" is always exciting, it reflects current political realities, and the facts seem well-grounded in contemporary science. The book is highly recommended. The author is, indeed, a professional geologist, but the nuanced narrative is worthy of a seasoned veteran of writing curricula and workshops.
