A Brilliant Send-Up of Everything You Know and Love By Pop Bop This book is smart, clever, breezy fun, and a very happy find.It's not that hard to mock or satirize the settled conventions of middle grade and early YA school dramas and fantasies. But, to deftly and lightly toy with and deconstruct those conventions, while telling a decent story, and while maintaining a light but focused tone - now that's an accomplishment.On the fantasy front we get some broad and also some subtle switcheroos. In heroine Terri's world damsels are born and raised and trained to rescue kidnapped princes. This switch isn't beaten to death, it just sets up the mirror world fun. Sure this is broad, but it allows for lots of little digs. (In an early scene Terri looks through her mom's and grandmom's and other women relatives' armour trying to find a questing/rescue outfit. Everything she tries on is Red Sonya style - skimpy and figure enhancing. It's a funny bit, both rueful and a pointed commentary on body shaming. This is fresh and clever stuff. She ends up with a shirt of mithril chain mail saved for her by her father. Mithril? Young readers will get the inside joke.)On the school drama front, Terri has to compete with a bunch of damsels, but enemy number one is an elvish princess damsel, who is outfitted with every mean girl attribute imaginable and even surrounded by a clique of mean girl wannabee damsels. The dialogue is straight out of the junior high cafeteria by way of Rivendell, but with swords.There's even some fun with romance conventions, as the shy guy pal Rune, who values Terri for who she is, tags along on her quest as her official sidekick. A charming touch, and one of the few middle grade romance treatments I've seen that isn't dopey.This probably all works because Terri is such an appealing character. She is a reluctant damsel. She just wants to be left alone with her nature magic. She is tough and stubborn and opinionated, but she's also confused and vulnerable, in an authentic and earnest way. Her drama is internal and honest, and while she can be grumpy and uncommunicative, she's never mean and she has a good grasp of who she is and what she wants. This is girrrrrll power with a mischevous touch.There's something else going on here, too. Reading this from a boy's point of view I could see where this could become irritating. The King is lame; Dad is clearly the second banana in Terri's household; Rune is just a sidekick. The women and girl's have all of the important action roles. At some point, maybe, the lightbulb goes on and the boy reader "gets" why many spirited girls don't love the usual fantasy hierarchy. It's not heavy-handed or pounded home, but it's there and it's an interesting insight with which to come away. Not bad for a "light" read.So, there are some laugh-out-loud funny bits, clever banter well above the norm, an imaginative plot with the usual twists, girl bonding, and a little soap-boxing about gender and being who you are - all wrapped up in a cheerful, upbeat and positive fashion. I ended up devouring this thing in a few days, despite my busy schedule.Damsel in Distress stars the reluctant heroine, Terri, who comes from a long (and famous) line of damsels, a faction of women whose job is to rescue captured princes and fight various adversaries. Terri, a plant mage, wishes only to be a gardener, and wants no part in any damsel business, however, when her mother bribes her with an estate that has land perfect for gardening, she reluctantly agrees to be a damsel and go on a quest to save the crown prince, who has been captured by a mysterious dark mage. She brings her best friend, Rune, along for the ride, but soon encounters her rivals, who are forced to join her on the quest out of necessity.The book is highly genre savvy and frequently lampshades and mocks typical tropes found in YA fiction and fantasy fiction in general, hence one of the reasons why I liked it so much. The immediately apparent one is 'damsels to the rescue; princes in distress', but the author playfully mocks several other tropes such as skimpy female armor and the typical flavor of teen drama found in YA fic. She also includes a considerable amount of dialogue regarding gender in the fantasy and YA genres, but manages to do this in a way that isn't distracting or soapboxy.Another praise I have for this book is the characters. Terri is a funny, often snarky narrator who was a fun character to read about. All the characters are quite dynamic and go through noticeable growth from the beginning to end. My personal favorite (for her growth was most apparent to me) was Ashia, who you will probably hate at first but...just read it. By the end you'll know why I love her. ;)In all, I sincerely enjoyed this and I can't wait for the next volume in the Darkhorse Saga.

Thank you for that.Damsel to the Rescue is a fantasy story that plays to the genre tropes in a tongue-in-cheek way. In this world, Princes are kidnapped and it's the Damsels that save them. The Damsel gets fame and the reward of marrying the prince she rescues. Terri doesn't care for all that. She loves her garden and would be perfectly happy letting all the other girls go romping across the land. That doesn't happen, of course, that'd be a bit of a boring story. A prince gets abducted and Terri's mother pretty much blackmails her into going to the rescue. Along the way she's forced to join together with a few other damsels that make an interesting adventuring party.That's all I'm going to say about the story as it happens pretty quickly through the first few chapters. I don't want to spoil anything. This is a fun read. There are some clever jabs at the non-armor of ladies, useless princes, and overbearing parents. I enjoyed the writing and characters. The play on a familiar setting was fun.To be fair, the story isn't perfect. Terri can be a little too good at what she does, especially for a girl who shunned training. Her nature magic seems to have few limits and having her take a short rest puts her right back into the fray. The supporting cast could have stepped up a little more to take some of the awesome off her shoulders. That's really the only critique I have.Damsel to the Rescue is clever, well-written, and fun.
