Tom Baxter and his wife, Sarah, have decided to leave England and retire to the peace and tranquillity of a remote, run-down, hill farm on the island of La Palma, in the Canaries. What should have been a relaxed and stress-free retirement rapidly turns into a nightmare of epic proportions when the volcanic ridge underneath their new home begins to erupt, and threatens to trigger a mega-tsunami with the potential to wipe out every city on the Atlantic coast of North America. With the spotlight of global media attention focused on their island home, the couple are soon caught up in a rapidly changing set of deadly events which ultimately transforms their lives, and the lives of many tens of thousands of people in the Canary Islands and beyond. “‘When The Tide Goes Out’ is a thrilling and tense read and if you love films like ‘2012’ and ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ you will certainly love this book.” – Sarah Hardy, By the Letter Book Reviews

Review By Sarah Hardy of By the Letter Book Reviews on 16 Oct. 2015Format: PaperbackWhen The Tide Goes Out is quite different to the usual style of books I read. It is a thriller but of the environmental kind.Having just spent our summer holiday in the Canary Islands I have to say I am glad I did not read this book before or during it.The authors description of the islands are very picturesque and idyllic. He very much brings to life the scenery which was wonderful, saying that though he very much brought to life the devastation that is caused and left behind by a natural disaster. This for me was quite uncomfortable in parts to read but was very well written. The story itself is set over 6 days and flicks between quite a few different characters. My favourite characters were Tom who lives in a remote part of the island with his dog Daisy and Consquela who is estranged from her husband and is trying to make a fresh start.Through the characters current lives, the reader sees the chaos of loss and devastation as it starts to happen. It certainly makes for some tense reading in parts as you have no idea which, in fact if any, of the characters are going to survive. When The Tide Goes Out is a thrilling and tense read. I can't compare it to any other books as have read nothing similar but if you love films like 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow you will certainly love this book. Many thanks to the author for an Advanced Readers Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.By MrsBookworm on 27 Oct. 2015Format: Paperback Verified PurchaseI thoroughly enjoyed this book; I couldn't put it down. I couldn't put it down!
From the Author After teaching students about natural hazards such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions for nearly 34 years, I decided that it was high time that I widened my audience - hence the book. When the Tide Goes Out is about a cataclysmic natural event which, in fact, has happened many times before and will almost certainly happen again - perhaps very soon. When the western flank of La Palma collapses, it may well create a tsunami so big and travelling at such great speed, that every city on the eastern seaboard of the USA would be inundated and approximately 150 million people could die. However, the impact of this mega-tsunami will not be just confined to the USA; British coastal cities such as Plymouth, Exeter, Southampton and even London will also be badly affected. If an eruption of Cumbre Vieja triggers a structural collapse of La Palma, residents in these cities will have just 10 hours to evacuate - or they too, will suffer the fate predicted for those people living all along the east coast of the USA.My second novel, 'Fractured' is now complete and should be available by the summer of 2016. Not wishing to give too much away, this book will certainly make you think twice about how you cross the English Channel in the future. I am also currently working on a sequel to Fractured which has a working title of Tunnel Vision and, following feedback from my readership, I eventually plan to write a sequel to When the Tide Goes Out. Set in North Norfolk, this book is likely to be called Storm Surge

I had been looking for something different to read and I came across this book on Amazon. It isn't the usual type of story I would go for, but ended up being the best book I have read this year. It kept me hooked, the characters were totally believable ... almost as if this was a true story. Well written and a superb plot. I cannot wait for the next book by P.J Bennett to be released.

I have been interested in volcanology but I like that the writer kept Tom a main character throughout out the story so that what was happening with the volcano was being explained in layman's terms.

Good Book By sogosp When I saw the length I was doubtful about whether Or not I would really enoy this one, but it turned out to be fantastic. After a slow start the book became one that I could not put down. If you love disaster books, this one is a good read.
