Aegion has lost faith. Faith in society, in the corrupt government Malos, and most of all in himself. He believes he is cursed to bring trouble to whoever crosses his path, forcing him to intervene in problems that are none of his business. Even miles away from the closest city, secluded in the deepest part of the dying wilderness, his curse brings problems to his front door. This is why Malos has branded him as The Scourge of the Wilds, a danger to all, deserving only death. However, he often hears another name whispered, one he much prefers, though he doesn’t believe it himself, a hero. But when his curse throws a young girl, Anadilcia, who is in search of her long lost father, at him, his whole life changes. She is being chased by a group of brutes who have vowed to get revenge and retrieve the ancient machine she took, their master has made it obvious failure is not an option. As far as Aegion is concerned, his curse has struck again, but this time it turns out much differently. Welcome to Sinesol, a planet with a sun that is only a husk of it’s former glory, the dust of which has covered the planet and become an essential part of life, intertwined with both living creatures and inanimate objects alike. This, along with not one but two catastrophic disasters thousands of years prior, has brought humanity to the brink of extinction. However, humans are known for their resilience and desire to survive, even when all the odds are against them. Over the past few hundred years, the people of Sinesol have began to recover, at least as much as the evil Malos will allow them to.

A great find By Chris Downloaded this on a whim since it was free from a new author, which I usually don't even look at, but it was surprisingly good. It was short enough to be a quick read, but had some very strong plot points. I don't know if he has any more plans for this world, but I will keep my eye out for it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Read By Patrick Solis II This was my first Steampunk type book I've ever read and I really enjoyed it. There is something about mixing the simplicity of The Wilds with the technology of the machines that I really liked! I really recommend this book to anyone who is interested in steampunk or even just futuristic cowboys

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. New season starts with a bang! By Doug Season 2 Episode 1 starts off with a bang! JC and his team are off to South America for more action and in-your-face confrontations, this time working for former General Robinson and a slime ball named Don Carlos Gutiérrez. JC has multiple reasons to dislike both and to not trust either Robinson or Gutierrez. Even after hearing Gutierrez's supposed plan to retire, JC and team are skeptical but a contract is a contract and they carry out several assassinations designed to start a war between the families controlling the drug trade. This course of action is intended to allow Gutierrez to appear to be the peacemaker by settling the dispute, assuming no one is able to determine he's the one who started all the recent bloodshed. The General's agenda remains unclear and only adds to JC's creeping unease. This episode ends with the news that the leaders of the controlling families have contacted Gutierrez with a request to meet.Rex Carpenter's writing of action thrillers is a joy to read! The dialogue is short and direct, the pace is steady with surprises in the plot and revealing backgrounds of the characters. The members of the team are each very deadly in their right but defer to JC for tactics and strategy and often offer up their perspectives on the situations they face. Some of their comments are funny and others are chilling...just what you'd expect from a group of professional fixers and, when necessary, contract hitters. If you are a veteran of Carpenter's stories and style, I believe you will welcome this next installment with the feelings of seeing an old friend who has new adventures to share. If you are a newcomer, I suggest you read about JC's escapades starting with Season 1 Episode1 and be sure to include the background exposes about Duke and Joan in your reading choices. This is some of the best thriller writing you will encounter today!

By rehabber OK I am ready for ep 2, this was a book you want to start when you have nothing else to do, because you will not want to put it down. Excellent story telling and all the characters are interesting and I want to root for them. This would make a very good TV series.

Barton The first book in the second season of the Fixer Series.JC, Joan, Duke, and Theo make up the main characters of this series. JC is the lynch pin that both gathered the team and holds them together. Handpicked, for their unique backgrounds and skill sets, together they form the core of a lethal team. The author has written two spin off stories featuring Joan and Duke. Both are great standalone books that newcomers and fans alike will enjoy. They give us the history of the characters and how they came to join JC.The story opens following the events of the first season. After scattering the team in the face of congressional hearings, JC and the team are back together. A contract with The General has the team flying to Bolivia. The client, The Mexican, a drug lord. Fans will recognize both of these names and wonder WHY, Given that The General betrayed them and the Mexican had JC kidnapped and tortured. It's a question that begs for an answer. The Mexican and JC have a history. Those days have defined his life and he's worked hard to atone for the blood on his hands. As a fan, and knowing the background, I was set on edge from the beginning and had so many questions running through my mind. They meet up with The Mexican's new head of security, another American named Del. He's the new JC only he's not and it doesn't take long for a Mexican standoff (pun intended). Guns, hand grenades, knives, it's a memorable first meeting and sets the tone for the rest of the story. JC has no idea why he's there or what they are going to be asked to do. Given the history, the air is thick with aggression and distrust on both sides. The meeting almostliteral explodes before it begins. When the team finally finds out why they are there, they have to admit the plan seems to have some logic but they can't help wondering what they're missing and what is in it for The General. The team splits up, each assigned a different task that together will achieve the goals of The Mexican. The fly in the ointment is that the team’s numbers increase by two. JC and company are saddled with Del and another member of The Mexican's team, Isabella, who is named in this book but we do not get to meet her yet. The tasks are as audacious as they are spectacular and for one team member, reigning in the destruction has no meaning. This is a short, fast, action packed book that gets your adrenaline pumping but is frustrating because you don't want it to end. Kudos to the author for a great start to a series that has continued to grow in popularity and is a testament to the outstanding talent in indie publishing today. I highly recommend this series and would have no problem recommending it for action and thriller lovers.

The Betrayal: A Red Cell Novel, by John Kalkowski

Review "Thestory is intelligently plotted and deftly trades between expected developmentsand shocking surprises. The novel becomes engrossing, progressing quickly, andwhen Will finally arrives at the stadium, it is almost impossible to put down."--Foreword Clarion ReviewsFull Review: forewordreviews.com/reviews/the-betrayal/

From the Back Cover Going to the stadium alone would put his life indanger. The only people in the world who even remotely would give him a chanceto survive were sitting before him. And even Agent Tenepior had revealed hisdoubt. Rubbing his sore neck, Will continued to bendover in his chair. Everything had gotten so messed up. His grades were ruined, his girlfriend taken from him, his identity spread throughout radicalcommunities, and he had been attacked twice. This terrorist had destroyed hislife in less than two days. Only by luck had he so far survived. Why would he expect this time to be different? Was it even possible to rescue his girlfriend, halt a possible terroristattack, and end up making it out alive? He was only a kid--a kid who so far wasnot winning this battle. And no matter how hard these intelligence officersprepared to neutralize the risks, it was pretty obvious he would be walkingstraight into a trap.

About the Author John Kalkowski earned a nomination for the Nebraska Golden Sower Award with his first novel, Red Cell. In this sequel, he takes the action to his favorite of all sports teams, the Nebraska Huskers. He has taught middle-school language arts for nineteen years and lives in Omaha with his wife and two children.

I eagerly awaited the follow up. I found it similar to the original and enjoyed it. I was a little disappointed at the length, especially considering the length of time since the first book. I will definitely be in line for the next installment.

The Cabin, by Bridget Nash

About the Author Bridget Nash lives in northwest Oklahoma where she was a newspaper journalist who received several Associated Press/Oklahoma Press Association awards for both writing and photography. She has a small portrait photography business and now stays home with her daughter, contributing to the news world on a freelance basis. Players is Bridget’s first completed novel since she was in eighth grade, but she swears if she ever finds that eighth-grade manuscript, she’ll burn it. Ever since she could hold a pencil, she has enjoyed writing as a recreational activity. As a child and a teen she could often be found outdoors with a notebook and pen, listening to the birds and the wind while making up her own worlds on paper. When she isn’t writing or taking photographs, Bridget enjoys reading and watching sitcoms simultaneously. Her favorite sitcoms are Frasier, Friends and I Love Lucy. Her favorite books are Frankenstein, Jane Eyre and A Ring of Endless Light. She hates putting away laundry and doesn’t know much about cooking, but she likes to make her own kombucha and experiment with growing edible things like tomatoes, strawberries and pumpkins. She much prefers cold weather over warm and loves rain and snow, even though she prefers going barefoot over wearing shoes. Bridget lives in a very small Oklahoma town with a population of about 400, along with her husband; a daughter; two dogs, Trevor and Penny; a border collie who doesn’t think dog rules apply to him, Taban; a cat named Taylor Swift; and a fancy rat named Sheldon. There are also black widows by the water meter but she doesn’t name them and prefers not to think about them.

It's hard to write a review about a book like this, because you don't want to give anything away. So wonderfully written with all the little pieces that slowly fit together to lead you to a beautiful ending to a horrific nightmare. I went into this book thinking I was reading a romance with a twist....it is so much more than that! A horrifying and beautiful tale of survival in the most dire and difficult situation, but shows that humans can survive anything when they work together and never give up. I laughed, I cried, I was frightened and had so many emotions and feels through the entire book! Gobbled it up in just one day! Definitely will be recommending this book to everyone!

I'm not a reader and don't usually like to read, but I couldn't stop reading this book.Okay, so this is a very obvious statement, but I have to say it anyway…Bridget Nash is an AMAZING writer. Before I knew it, I’d spent the entire evening engrossed in the book and ignoring my real-life responsibilities. Getting lost in a book is an awesome feeling, but getting lost in a truly great book? There’s nothing better. Cabin will totally suck you in, too. I'm looking forward to reading more books by this author

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Kudos to the author to a well-written, interesting story. By Carol Nelson This was a very satisfying, well-written book with an original plot. It was a couldn't-put-it-down kind of book which moved quickly, stayed organized, and was thoroughly enjoyable. It was not predictable, and never devolved into silly superficial angst, but had realistic characters with natural responses to unusual or extraordinary circumstances.

Augusta Hill is definitely getting out of her comfort zone with a completely new genre and a much edgier feel. This story is very well done, the characters are likeable, and the setting is really awesome! This is a great romance story with lots of adventure and excitement. I always feel like Augusta does such a wonderful job describing her scenery which really makes you feel like you're there with the characters. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

I was immediately invested in the romance between Rose and Gabriella, eager for them to realize their feelings for each other, and ready for them to confront the dangers of the jungle. Well worth a read.

War + Money + Sex = BETRAYAL!

Greed, lies and treachery from trusted companions leads to death and disaster.

In the midst of the Vietnam war, Anthony Brister, blue-blooded scion of a prominent Connecticut family and captain of a US Navy Swift boat, is murdered in a village in the Mekong delta. A friend of the victim, the senior advisor of a South Vietnamese junk force base, is ordered to investigate but is unable to solve the crime. Lt. Peter Walker’s romantic liaison with Madeleine Chi, the main suspect in the shooting, does not help his credibility as an investigator and he is relieved of his command and 'encouraged' to resign his Navy commission.

Many of the principals in the murder intrigue end up in southern California 15 years later when Brister’s sister uses her family’s political contacts to press for closure to the cold case. Walker finds himself embroiled again in an episode he would as soon leave forgotten. His unofficial but crucial role in a resurrected investigation charges his life with new energy, and he finds he is enjoying both the drama of the search for a killer from ages past and the evolution of the people he once knew when he was a Mekong Junkman.

Walker uncovers a scheme involving Madeleine, a notorious junkman named Van, blackmail, murder and possibly treason. Then it's a race to the finish: can Walker solve the case before the murderers get to him?

But, it is more than that. This novel gives you insight into South Vietnamese people, their small town on the Mekong Delta and their trials from surviving in a war-torn country to learning to adapt to life in America as refugees. At the same time reading the book teaches you a little of what it was like for our military in the Vietnam War. It's fiction but Barra's vivid descriptions, story-telling technique and character development make it seem like a true account of real people and real events.

A navy base set in the Mekong Delta during the Vietnamese war filled with love, suspense and a mysterious murder By virginia billingsley Another page turner from Paul Barra. A navy base set in the Mekong Delta during the Vietnamese war filled with love, suspense and a mysterious murder. There's humor when a snake invades the base kitchen and causes an all out panic and there's snipers on the river banks that keep the junkmen always alert. It's another must read from Paul Barra.
