Fast paced, unique post apocalyptic fiction By Lilah Morgan I've always enjoyed post apocalyptic stories, whether in movies or in books, and this book was a great example of the genre and a nice break from the usual zombie/virus stories. A meteor slams into the earth and things go about as well for the human race as they did for the dinosaurs. Troy is a man who has spent huge amounts of time and money preparing for just such an instance. His family and friends called him crazy in the beginning, but once the meteor hits, Troy's bunker is the only thing keeping them alive. The story definitely keeps you turning pages right up until the end, and I'm looking forward to reading Brad Knight's other books. I could even see this being made into a movie someday!

You are like..."NO! no way!"...so then you can only hope there is a continuation into a book two??? I sure hope so. I enjoyed this from the first page and didn't put it down until it ended. I would love to see where this family goes as far as starting over and surviving when the odds have been against them and the world from day one.

The characters seemed stilted and I never truly got an adequate picture of them. The meteor strike was a good premise but not very entertaining. I would try another book from this author.

Taking a lighter look at the causes of stress, helping you manage your health and life more effectively. "A state changer! This little book is a fun little view on stress. Perfect if you're feeling stressed out. It flips how we view stress right on it's head and I found myself chuckling from start to finish. The funny thing is we know how powerful laughter is and when I came to the end of the book I had found my stress gone for the time being. If you want a heavy in depth read then this isn't for you but what I would advise is, if you're feeling stressed out, pop the kettle on or pour yourself a glass of wine, sip and read this little gem to reframe your thinking and change your state."

Tom Baxter and his wife, Sarah, have decided to leave England and retire to the peace and tranquillity of a remote, run-down, hill farm on the island of La Palma, in the Canaries. What should have been a relaxed and stress-free retirement rapidly turns into a nightmare of epic proportions when the volcanic ridge underneath their new home begins to erupt, and threatens to trigger a mega-tsunami with the potential to wipe out every city on the Atlantic coast of North America. With the spotlight of global media attention focused on their island home, the couple are soon caught up in a rapidly changing set of deadly events which ultimately transforms their lives, and the lives of many tens of thousands of people in the Canary Islands and beyond. “‘When The Tide Goes Out’ is a thrilling and tense read and if you love films like ‘2012’ and ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ you will certainly love this book.” – Sarah Hardy, By the Letter Book Reviews

When the Tide Goes Out, by PJ Bennett

Review By Sarah Hardy of By the Letter Book Reviews on 16 Oct. 2015Format: PaperbackWhen The Tide Goes Out is quite different to the usual style of books I read. It is a thriller but of the environmental kind.Having just spent our summer holiday in the Canary Islands I have to say I am glad I did not read this book before or during it.The authors description of the islands are very picturesque and idyllic. He very much brings to life the scenery which was wonderful, saying that though he very much brought to life the devastation that is caused and left behind by a natural disaster. This for me was quite uncomfortable in parts to read but was very well written. The story itself is set over 6 days and flicks between quite a few different characters. My favourite characters were Tom who lives in a remote part of the island with his dog Daisy and Consquela who is estranged from her husband and is trying to make a fresh start.Through the characters current lives, the reader sees the chaos of loss and devastation as it starts to happen. It certainly makes for some tense reading in parts as you have no idea which, in fact if any, of the characters are going to survive. When The Tide Goes Out is a thrilling and tense read. I can't compare it to any other books as have read nothing similar but if you love films like 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow you will certainly love this book. Many thanks to the author for an Advanced Readers Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.By MrsBookworm on 27 Oct. 2015Format: Paperback Verified PurchaseI thoroughly enjoyed this book; I couldn't put it down. Can't wait for the next bookMRS ROSANNE L TAYLOR on 26 Dec. 2015Format: PaperbackThis book cleverly intertwines the stories of several different characters together with factual knowledge of volcanic eruptions to deliver an unusual and gripping story. I couldn't put it down!

From the Author After teaching students about natural hazards such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions for nearly 34 years, I decided that it was high time that I widened my audience - hence the book. When the Tide Goes Out is about a cataclysmic natural event which, in fact, has happened many times before and will almost certainly happen again - perhaps very soon. When the western flank of La Palma collapses, it may well create a tsunami so big and travelling at such great speed, that every city on the eastern seaboard of the USA would be inundated and approximately 150 million people could die. However, the impact of this mega-tsunami will not be just confined to the USA; British coastal cities such as Plymouth, Exeter, Southampton and even London will also be badly affected. If an eruption of Cumbre Vieja triggers a structural collapse of La Palma, residents in these cities will have just 10 hours to evacuate - or they too, will suffer the fate predicted for those people living all along the east coast of the USA.My second novel, 'Fractured' is now complete and should be available by the summer of 2016. Not wishing to give too much away, this book will certainly make you think twice about how you cross the English Channel in the future. I am also currently working on a sequel to Fractured which has a working title of Tunnel Vision and, following feedback from my readership, I eventually plan to write a sequel to When the Tide Goes Out. Set in North Norfolk, this book is likely to be called Storm Surge

About the Author Peter James Bennett was born in Liverpool, England and studied at Plymouth University, Devon. He taught Geography, specialising in the physical side of the discipline, for over 34 years at one of England's top state schools and is now semi-retired and lives in Colchester - England's oldest recorded town with his wife, two daughters and much loved Border Collie, Ruby

I had been looking for something different to read and I came across this book on Amazon. It isn't the usual type of story I would go for, but ended up being the best book I have read this year. It kept me hooked, the characters were totally believable ... almost as if this was a true story. Well written and a superb plot. I cannot wait for the next book by P.J Bennett to be released.

I have been interested in volcanology but I like that the writer kept Tom a main character throughout out the story so that what was happening with the volcano was being explained in layman's terms.

Terrilyn Darkhorse descends from a long line of successful, prince-rescuing damsels. Now that she’s sixteen, she’s expected to uphold the family tradition. But Terri would rather remain at home, tending her garden, perfecting her plant magic, and staying far away from the highly competitive world of damsels. Then the local prince is kidnapped and Terri’s mother makes her an offer: If she rescues the prince, Terri can have the family’s second estate, Trellis, to turn into her own gardens. Terri has wanted Trellis since she was a little girl, so she sets out with her best friend Rune as her official sidekick, hoping to avoid the other damsels altogether. Which would be easier if they didn’t have to keep rescuing rival damsels from basilisks and man-eating trees. But Terri can’t justify abandoning them, because the monsters are being controlled and directed at her and the other damsels—a feat only a Dark Lord could accomplish. Terri’s magic improves with every challenge she faces, but she knows it’s not enough. If she wants to succeed, she’ll need to break the rules and recruit her rivals to help her defeat the most powerful Dark Lord the world has seen in five-hundred years.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Brilliant Send-Up of Everything You Know and Love By Pop Bop This book is smart, clever, breezy fun, and a very happy find. It's not that hard to mock or satirize the settled conventions of middle grade and early YA school dramas and fantasies. But, to deftly and lightly toy with and deconstruct those conventions, while telling a decent story, and while maintaining a light but focused tone - now that's an accomplishment. On the fantasy front we get some broad and also some subtle switcheroos. In heroine Terri's world damsels are born and raised and trained to rescue kidnapped princes. This switch isn't beaten to death, it just sets up the mirror world fun. Sure this is broad, but it allows for lots of little digs. (In an early scene Terri looks through her mom's and grandmom's and other women relatives' armour trying to find a questing/rescue outfit. Everything she tries on is Red Sonya style - skimpy and figure enhancing. It's a funny bit, both rueful and a pointed commentary on body shaming. This is fresh and clever stuff. She ends up with a shirt of mithril chain mail saved for her by her father. Mithril? Young readers will get the inside joke.)On the school drama front, Terri has to compete with a bunch of damsels, but enemy number one is an elvish princess damsel, who is outfitted with every mean girl attribute imaginable and even surrounded by a clique of mean girl wannabee damsels. The dialogue is straight out of the junior high cafeteria by way of Rivendell, but with swords. There's even some fun with romance conventions, as the shy guy pal Rune, who values Terri for who she is, tags along on her quest as her official sidekick. A charming touch, and one of the few middle grade romance treatments I've seen that isn't dopey. This probably all works because Terri is such an appealing character. She is a reluctant damsel. She just wants to be left alone with her nature magic. She is tough and stubborn and opinionated, but she's also confused and vulnerable, in an authentic and earnest way. Her drama is internal and honest, and while she can be grumpy and uncommunicative, she's never mean and she has a good grasp of who she is and what she wants. This is girrrrrll power with a mischevous touch. There's something else going on here, too. Reading this from a boy's point of view I could see where this could become irritating. The King is lame; Dad is clearly the second banana in Terri's household; Rune is just a sidekick. The women and girl's have all of the important action roles. At some point, maybe, the lightbulb goes on and the boy reader "gets" why many spirited girls don't love the usual fantasy hierarchy. It's not heavy-handed or pounded home, but it's there and it's an interesting insight with which to come away. Not bad for a "light" read. So, there are some laugh-out-loud funny bits, clever banter well above the norm, an imaginative plot with the usual twists, girl bonding, and a little soap-boxing about gender and being who you are - all wrapped up in a cheerful, upbeat and positive fashion. A very nice find indeed. Please note that I found this book while browsing kindleunlimited freebies. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A really fun read. By Anastasia This book was a blast to read. I felt like I was reading 'YA fiction for people who don't usually like YA fiction'. I ended up devouring this thing in a few days, despite my busy schedule.Damsel in Distress stars the reluctant heroine, Terri, who comes from a long (and famous) line of damsels, a faction of women whose job is to rescue captured princes and fight various adversaries. Terri, a plant mage, wishes only to be a gardener, and wants no part in any damsel business, however, when her mother bribes her with an estate that has land perfect for gardening, she reluctantly agrees to be a damsel and go on a quest to save the crown prince, who has been captured by a mysterious dark mage. She brings her best friend, Rune, along for the ride, but soon encounters her rivals, who are forced to join her on the quest out of necessity. The book is highly genre savvy and frequently lampshades and mocks typical tropes found in YA fiction and fantasy fiction in general, hence one of the reasons why I liked it so much. The immediately apparent one is 'damsels to the rescue; princes in distress', but the author playfully mocks several other tropes such as skimpy female armor and the typical flavor of teen drama found in YA fic. She also includes a considerable amount of dialogue regarding gender in the fantasy and YA genres, but manages to do this in a way that isn't distracting or soapboxy.Another praise I have for this book is the characters. Terri is a funny, often snarky narrator who was a fun character to read about. All the characters are quite dynamic and go through noticeable growth from the beginning to end. My personal favorite (for her growth was most apparent to me) was Ashia, who you will probably hate at first but...just read it. By the end you'll know why I love her. ;)In all, I sincerely enjoyed this and I can't wait for the next volume in the Darkhorse Saga.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Fun Fantasy Romp By Scott I was lucky enough to catch the authors husband on Google Plus at the right time and got a copy in exchange for a review. Thank you for that.Damsel to the Rescue is a fantasy story that plays to the genre tropes in a tongue-in-cheek way. In this world, Princes are kidnapped and it's the Damsels that save them. The Damsel gets fame and the reward of marrying the prince she rescues. Terri doesn't care for all that. She loves her garden and would be perfectly happy letting all the other girls go romping across the land. That doesn't happen, of course, that'd be a bit of a boring story. A prince gets abducted and Terri's mother pretty much blackmails her into going to the rescue. Along the way she's forced to join together with a few other damsels that make an interesting adventuring party. That's all I'm going to say about the story as it happens pretty quickly through the first few chapters. I don't want to spoil anything. This is a fun read. There are some clever jabs at the non-armor of ladies, useless princes, and overbearing parents. I enjoyed the writing and characters. The play on a familiar setting was fun.To be fair, the story isn't perfect. Terri can be a little too good at what she does, especially for a girl who shunned training. Her nature magic seems to have few limits and having her take a short rest puts her right back into the fray. The supporting cast could have stepped up a little more to take some of the awesome off her shoulders. That's really the only critique I have.Damsel to the Rescue is clever, well-written, and fun. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre.- I copy/pasted this review over from Goodreads. It wasn't until today that reviews were allowed here.
