About the Author My name is Sufian. I am 21 years old but the extensive amount of personal growth and wisdom I have acquired in a mere two decades makes my place within my age group very unusual. I wrote The Merge Between Heaven and Hell starting from sixth grade until my high school graduation. I got a summer job when I was 18 to pay the publication out of pocket. The only time I lived anywhere rent-free was at my mother’s house. So I took advantage of that time to invest in putting my foot in the door of published writing. I may not be a well-known writer like my idol, J. K. Rowling, but even she started from the bottom and earned her way to fame. If she can make her way to the top from a humble beginning, then why can’t I? I am in college to major in Psychology because matters of the mind intrigues me. I go to church every Sunday. I work out regularly. I practice resilience. I believe that the key to life is to work on yourself physically, mentally, spiritually, and psychologically. And to also apply those things to any external connection with other people.

The ninth installment in the New York Times best-selling Saxon Tales, the epic saga of the making of England, magnificently brought to life by "the reigning king of historical fiction" (USA Today).

A fragile peace reigns in Wessex, Mercia, and East Anglia. King Alfred's son, Edward, and formidable daughter, Aethelflaed, rule the kingdoms. But all around, the restless Northmen, eyeing the rich lands and wealthy churches, are mounting raids.

Uhtred of Bebbanburg, the kingdoms' greatest warrior, controls Northern Mercia from the strongly fortified city of Chester. But forces are gathering against him. Northmen allied to the Irish, led by the fierce warrior Ragnall Ivarson, are soon joined by the Northumbrians, and their strength could prove overwhelming. Despite the gathering threat, both Edward and Aethelflaed are reluctant to move out of the safety of their fortifications. But with Uhtred's own daughter married to Ivarson's brother, who can be trusted?

In the struggle between family and loyalty, between personal ambition and political commitment, there will be no easy path. But a man with a warrior's courage may be able to find it. Such a man is Uhtred, and this may be his finest hour.

By JPS First posted on Amazon.co.uk two minutes ago...This is the ninth book on Uthred, the pagan warlord fighting for King Alfred in the first episodes, for his heir King Edward (generally known – or rather little known - as Edward the Elder) and, since the last few episodes, for Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians, respectively the daughter and sister of the two kings. Despite this, and despite Uthred getting a bit “long on the tooth”, Bernard Cornwell still weaves his usual magic, and his usual tricks. The result is yet another superb read, with all of the usual ingredients including quite a few liberties with the historical record in general, and the chronology in particular, with which he manages to get away with. The menace is, this time, a Norse warlord - Ragnall Ivarson – who, together with his brother Sitric, has been expelled from Dublin by the Irish. As those who have read the previous volume might remember, Sitric has become Uthred’s son-in-law after having been his enemy. However, the other brother and his army land near and threaten Chester, and Mercia more generally, which is defended by the Lady of the Mercians, busy building Burroughs across the land to secure it, and Uthred, her (semi-independent) warlord.I will (barely) refrain from spoiling the story by summarising it, although it is an exciting one, and one which is skilfully told. Both Ragnall and Sitric are historical characters and they did manage to carve themselves another kingdom after having – temporarily - lost their Dublin heritage. This, however, was not achieved with Uthred’s involvement since he is a largely fictitious character and the brothers seem to have very much worked together. It is also quite true that Edward the Elder did not attempt to conquer Northumbria during his long reign (AD 899 to AD 924) simply because he already had his hands full in subduing East Anglia and the Five Burroughs. It is also very likely that his sister (the Lady of the Mercians) did not enough forces to attempt this conquest on her own. She probably had barely enough to defend her territory and nibble at Northern Mercia, still held by Norse and Dane settlers, little by little, and consolidate her piece mail acquisitions by building fortified settlements. All of this is well shown in the book. Then you have the second usual ingredient: the campaigns, battles and fights. These are what you would expect if you have read any of the previous titles in the Series: quite superb! One of them was even more impressive than the others. It is a rather wild cavalry charge that will provide one explanation for the book’s title. Also interesting and well described are the fluctuating allegiances that Viking warriors could have towards their warlords. Those that did not win consistently and were deemed to have lost the favour of the Gods were liable to suffer large-scale desertions, something that existed throughout the Viking Age and was also quite typical in pagan Germanic armies. Yet another well described set of features are the tricks and ruses employed by both sides while campaigning, with the crafty Ragnall being largely a match for Uthred. Again, the author can be commended for his descriptions of so-called “Dark Age” warfare which are simply excellent and, this time, the story moves forward, with Uthred’s way home to Bebbanburg being (almost) cleared out by the end of the book. Finally, you have the third ingredient: the characterisation. Once again, Uthred takes centre stage, with Bernard Cornwell succeeding in making the ruthless, successful but ageing warlord into a rather sympathetic character. This is achieved by showing him as a human being, with his longing to return to his ancestral home, but also with his doubts and his fears, carefully hidden behind his blustering and his calculated violence and cruelty. He is yet again surrounded by the “usual” cast. There is Æthelflæd herself, intelligent, headstrong, draped in her dignity and pious behaviour to the extent that she is starting to look at bit like her father as she ages, but also somewhat annoyed when Uthred is subject to other females’ attention. There is also the dashing Athelstan (the future King) and a young warrior who is once again being “toughened up” by Uthred. There is also Uthred’s fast, old and steadfast Irish companion, Finan, about whose origins the reader will learn in this book. There are also the flamboyant Viking warlord Sitric (Siggtryggr) and his headstrong wife Stiorra, Uthred’s daughter and so much like both her father and mother in a number of ways. Then you get, in addition to Ragnall, the evil and half-mad sorceress Birda, and a couple of original characters, a really saintly but witty priest, who sides with Uthred and does not want to become a bishop, and his strange and rather original wife.Ultimately, there is the first person narrative, with the story told by Uthred himself in a mixture of arrogance, blustering, self-deprecation and honesty, and there is the author himself, who manages to weave all this together into a superb (but shorter than usual) book that you will not be able to let go once you lay your hands on it. Five stars yet again and without the slightest hesitation…

Uhtred may have grown older, but he’s still a cunning and effective warrior. He’s still focussed on winning back Bebbanburg, but there’s always another threat, another battle to be fought first.‘There’s a time for caution, ‘I said, ‘and a time to just kill the bastards.’In this novel, the threat is from Ragnall Ivarson, a Norse warlord who together with his brother Sitric (Uhtred’s son-in-law), has been expelled by the Irish from Dublin. Ragnall and his army land near Chester, controlled by Uhtred, and threaten both Chester and Mercia. Uhtred has decisions to make and battles to fight. There’s plenty of intrigue, tested loyalties and changing allegiances. Uhtred himself is a clever opportunist who knows just how to find (or make) an advantage. There are some familiar characters, and some new ones as well. I’m particularly fond of the new bishop’s wife.‘It is not difficult to be a lord, a jarl or even a king, but it is difficult to be a leader.’Like each of the other eight books so far in this series, there are intriguing characters and plenty of action. The historical setting is great, and if the boundaries between fact and fiction are blurred, then it certainly doesn’t detract from the story. Uhtred’s first person narrative carries the story forward at just the right pace and perhaps he is one step closer to reclaiming Bebbanburg at the end.I love these novels. My only problem? How long do I have to wait for the next instalment?Jennifer Cameron-Smith

Enthralling By Susan Johnson Sometimes a book series starts to go dull when you reach the 10th book but that is certainly not the case with this book. In fact, it's my favorite book so far and I have loved all of them. This has everything- a trip to Ireland, Uhtred's interactions with all three of his children, a reunion with his first love, magnificent battle scenes and an interesting prostitute named Mus who inspires an army. What more can a person ask for? There is just something magical about Uhtred. He was born a Saxon and raised to be the Lord of Bebbanburg. He was captured by the Danes, raised as one and is an ardent follower of Thor. Who can blame him? Thor seems like a delightful God and Valhalla a wonderful place to pass eternity. And the Saxon Christianity? Uhtred says he has seen people whip themselves until their back is strips of flesh, people limp on bleeding stumps to worship the tooth of the whale that swallowed Jonah and a man who hammered nails through his own feet. Uhtred says, "Why prefer a god who wants you to torture yourself?" Still he aligns himself with the Saxon Christians because his final goal is to reclaim Bebbanburg, stolen by his uncle. Uhtred is a brilliant military man who seems callous and has no trouble killing. Yet he is loyal and treats his friends and the men under his command well. He loves his children in spite of their very real differences. He is a man that others love to follow. He is a natural leader. In spite of his flaws, he is admirable. This book is a wonderful addition to the series. You can read it as a stand alone as there are plenty of explanations but long time readers, like myself, will enjoy the evolution of Uhtred. And there is an added bonus. The section about Mus is just downright humorous. I laughed so hard at her inclusion at the end of the story. This is a homerun for me and I only regret that I have to wait a year to catch up with him again.

Michael and Christina are back in the explosive conclusion to the IMA series. The IMA is an international group of mercenaries who deal in blood the way other businessmen deal in oil or diamonds. There is no commodity they will not provide; and now, their operations have expanded to include human trafficking. Public enemies of the IMA are disappearing, and when they're found again they're in third world brothels...or dead. AMI was created as a foil to the IMA's efforts; everything the IMA stands for, AMI is against. Everyone in the group has something to lose and the only goal that unites them is the desire for the death of the IMA's leader: Adrian Callaghan. But when one of AMI's operatives turns up dead, both Christina and Michael are forced to go undercover to infiltrate Adrian Callaghan's seediest venture yet. This time, it's personal.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Suspenseful conclusion to a great series By Shadowswept This book was the most suspenseful out of the entire series. Because it's the last one, I knew that anything could happen. If you've made it this far, then I don't think I need to warn you that the villain is brutal, and that this is not a story in which the hero always saves the day. It's been a long time since I've read anything in the thriller genre, so I don't know how much has changed. I can tell you that this is different than anything I've read in that genre before. Back then it was always a lone wolf hero going after the bad guy. There was rarely a love interest, and if there was he'd have to save her from the bad guy. What I love here is that Christina is not just the damsel in distress, but neither is she Ripley from Aliens. She is not bad ass all the time, but she is not weak either. As she says, she is a survivor. That means that she's vulnerable, but she makes it through and pushes on.Michael is vulnerable too, and his character arc is really incredible. He's such a tough man, and he's still gruff and prickly even when he's in love. He never did soften all that much, but his love is fierce. The one typically romantic thing he did in the entire series just about made me cry, because it was so significant coming from him. This love story became so powerful over the course of these four books, because it built so slowly. Even though Michael stated his love in the first book--and I do mean stated rather than declared--it was more a selfish claiming of what he wanted than actually showing his love. Well, he proved it here beyond what most men would even consider doing. The violence in this book is not graphic. Most of it happens off the page, but we are clear on what did happen even if we are spared having it described as it's happening. The suspense is built up enough that we are feeling all the terror and dread of the characters. There is rape in this book, but it is not sexualized at all. It's shown to be an act of violence in a long list of violent acts. I've never seen it handled that way in any other book. The author deserves credit just for that alone. She also deserves credit for not making it about gender. Since it's a violent act, anyone can be a target. The only thing that didn't make sense to me is why Suraya didn't at least try to escape after she suspected that she'd been compromised. She knew she was a sitting duck there, and if she was still being allowed to work on the street she should have tried to run away. It would have been more believable if her escape attempt had failed than if she never tried to escape at all.I enjoyed all the sexy times between Christina and Michael in this series, and I wish there would have been more of them. Maybe they wouldn't have been as sexy, though, if there had been a lot of them. This kept the sexual tension going through the whole series. They are certainly one of my favorite fictional couples ever. It was the typical bad boy falls for good girl done in a fresh, new way. I love that Michael proved his love with actions rather than spouting a bunch of gooey declarations of love. He told her that he loved her, but what was most important was that he showed her. Actions really do speak louder than words. He could be tender at times, but he remained the antihero to the end. He was just the right amount of hot and cold for my tastes. There is a huge difference between an antihero and an abusive jerk. This is the way to redeem a bad guy. You don't have him brutalize the heroine in every way possible and then turn him into a love interest. You can only have him reach a certain level of bad with the heroine before it becomes too much. The author knew how far to go with Michael, and it worked out to be a great love story. That ending, wow! I finished the book at 2:30 in the morning and got out of bed to look up the epilogue on Goodreads, because I couldn't wait to read it. I can't say more, because I don't want to spoil it for anyone. All I can say is that this an excellent series, even for someone like me who is not fond of series books.

By doing so you will get a good idea of the character development, especially Michaels and Christina's.Cease and Desist picks up where Locked and Loaded left off.Michael and Christina have left IMA and are in the infancy of their own organization called The AMI. If you read the previous books in the series you will know who Callaghan is, (the head of the IMA), and why Michael and Christina's sole purpose is to take him down.Michael and ChristinaWhat can I say about these two except they have come so far. Christina has matured so much from the innocent naïve girl she was in the first book. I adored her character in this book. She has accepted that her future is now with Michael and stands behind him. They have been through so much together."Together, we were like an island in the eye of a hundred-year storm. We were alive and full of the kind of fire that can light an entire sky up with brilliant streaks of neon flame even as civilization burns to a smoldering ash below. The consequences would come later. For now, we would wreak our own brand of chaos."Michael, the mercenary/assassin was just awesome. Even though his character was still hard, he had a wonderful soft spot for Christina, which was so sweet. I loved his character!“You rearranged my entire world, forced me to live by an entirely new set of rules. You almost got me killed, but I survived, and then I got stronger. And so, cher amour, did you.”Callaghan is the most evil of evils. Again he is up to his old trick but this time he is into some more, human trafficking."He was Satan with a human face, and I wanted to put him back where he belonged. In hell. “One of us would have to sell another. One of us would have to be trafficked to Adrian Callaghan's men.”If you enjoy action, suspense and thrills with some wonderful romantic scenes and a thrilling and engaging plot I definitely suggest you read this series. I loved every moment!! ARC kindly provided by author for an honest review

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very satisfying conclusion to the series! By Veronica Lynn Pit Bull Cease & Desist picks up where Locked & Loaded left off. Michael and Christina are building their new organization the AMI in order to take down the evil mastermind and leader of the IMA Adrian Callaghan. Michael and Christina are firmly together and Christina seems to have finally gotten over any remaining reservations she may have had about being in a relationship with Michael. They make a good team. This time around Callaghan has gotten involved in the human trafficking business and the AMI decide to infiltrate the ring. There is nothing romanticized about this version of trafficking. It’s brutal and ugly and violent. And the characters are very human, very vulnerable and very real. I’m drawn to the fictional characters of paranormal urban fantasy – those sword swinging women with 9 lives and brass balls. I’m drawn because it’s fantasy – who doesn’t want to see themselves as tough and strong and invincible? Christina is not in an urban fantasy – and it’s hard to see her struggle with her fear of being chosen as the sacrificial lamb, her relief that someone else volunteers and her guilt around her willingness to accept someone else’s sacrifice while she remains safe. But it’s very real. And of course a moot point because whenever Callaghan is involved in something, no one remains safe for very long.Ultimately it’s Michael and Christina pitted against Callaghan and it gets…intense. Uncomfortably intense. The IMA has been one of my favorite series and I’ve given every previous installment a solid 5 stars. I rounded up here, but I honestly think Cease and Desist is more 4 ½ stars for me because it was just so…angsty. And of course my usual complaint when I’m really into a particular couple and focused on the relationship – there was so much…plot. Stressful, tension provoking plot. Yes there were strides in the relationship department and Michael and Christina had opportunities to showcase their ever evolving chemistry and connection…but frankly I just wanted more rainbows and puppies and unicorns. The last 20% was a nail biting wild ride that gave me whiplash. I went from hanging on to the edge of my seat - to OMG Christina you totally Kate Daniels sword wielding Snoopy dance rock - to wait…what? – Ms. Campbell I’d like to introduce you to Kathy Bates “you’re biggest fan” because you’re gonna totally need to be re-writing that last bit…to a very satisfactory, hopeful and uplifting ending (that I had to re-read a few times). While I still personally would have preferred more concrete closure (with puppies and unicorns)…I realize this was a perfect ending for this series.

Review "Tjia's subtly placed illustrations offer a sometimes menacing and sometimes tantalizing viewpoint from a cat's perspective. With only the extension of the paw, I, as well as Holden, could clearly see the expression of each human face and recognize the looks of adoration, danger and guilt." --Ricepaper

This was my first book in the series; I immediately fell in love with the writing and the story. I couldn't put it down, I must have used all the fingers on my left hand tracing my way back through story branches trying to map out all the different endings. It was a delight to get to know the characters in different ways through the different story paths.Grown-up subject matter and content make this definitely not for kids, but it's all part of the story; nothing gratuitous.

I would reco By Nick Armstrong You don't need me to tell you to buy this book. You know you need it. Just be aware that you are not free from the clutches of death's cold hand just because you are an adorable kitten. I would recommend not getting too attached to any of your 9 lives.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. not a fan By Brad I bought this book based on perfect 5 star reviews. I have no clue how this book has received such good reviews. This is the only genre of books I read and after reading about 20% I was too frustrated by the writing so I stopped reading it. The books I prefer are the ones that make you feel like you are there in person with the characters or feel like you really know the characters as if they are your friends. While reading this book I felt like it was rushed in describing everything and at one point I felt like I was watching a movie trying to cram in too much or was in a hurry to move things along. Would have much rather preferred the author to get more descriptive. Also, the main character, Zeb, has no personality and yet people still like him (because of course he is better than all humans in what he is capable of doing). This is now the only 2nd book out of hundreds I have read that I couldn't finish due to the writing style.

Although I was a beta reader for this book, I enjoyed it enough to purchase my copy as soon as it came out. This book is easily read as a stand alone but will make you want to buy the first two as soon as you can. I have enjoyed watching Ty Patterson grow as a writer. His Warrior series had taken an interesting premise, a small group of deniable operators who tackle off the books problems for the government, and given it a soul named Zeb. Like the others in the series, The Warrior Code starts out strong and just gets better. Others have voiced concerns at the number of characters in this book, but I think that each of the characters plays an essential part in the story line and keeps the suspense at a sustainable level throughout the book. I am not one to reveal plot details in my reviews, so I will only say that the setting for the book is idyllic, the action is non-stop and very realistic, the dialog is witty and entertaining, but most of all the ending was completely out of left field and leaves you anxious for him to complete the next book.

Mr. Patterson has created characters that any enthusiast of the this genre would simply love. In the Warrior Code, Ty has absolutely swung for the fences and hit another grand slam. The Zeb Carter character gets better with each novel as Ty peels away the layers of Carters' once tortured soul. We as readers get to see not only heroics within him but also his fallacies. He depends on the other Warriors far more he lets on and have the opportunity to witness his emotional evolution from book one, The Warrior.Keep up the good work Ty.
